BOX HAVING DISPENSING MEANS Filed Aug. 18, 1953 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
United States Patent BOX HAVING DISPENSING MEANS Edward T. Pringle, Jr., Brooklyn, N. Y. Application August 18, 1953, Serial No. 374,894
1 Claim. (Cl. 229-7) This invention relates to a box top or container and more particularly to a box or container for flaked or granulated material as cereals, soap or the like wherein the box or container is provided with an opening for remov ing the material from the box and a closing device for the opening.
It is an object of this invention to provide a box or container of this kind having a dispensing opening for opening the box and a slider carried by the box top for opening and closing the opening in the box rather than tearing an openmg in the box, which is not closable after the opening is formed or attaching an opening closing device to the box after the opening in the box has been formed.
It is another object of the invention to provide a closing device for a formed opening in a box or container which may be formed of the same material as the box or container and is slidable on the box or container for opening and closing the box or container for the dispensing of selected portions of the material from the box. The box is formed for slidably supporting the closing device by forming the closing device at the same time and from the same material as the box, a desirable sliding fit between the closing device and the box is readily and easily achieved at an economical cost fo both the box and opening and closing device.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one end of a box or container formed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the end of the box, partly broken away, the box being in the fully opened position of the elements thereof as before the completion of the manufacture of the box.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the box before the second or outer end wall and sliding plate are placed in position.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section, partly broken away, of the box with the end walls and slider in their position.
Referring to the drawings the numeral designates generally a box or container for flake or granulated material as soap flakes or the like which, is generally distributed in small portions as required by the user and it has been the custom heretofore to sever the top portion of a box for removing the material and then partially closing the box by moving the severed portion of the box to a closing position for fully containing the material and thereby preventing any dirt or foreign material from entering the box. Usually the top of the box has been formed as a closure for the box for this purpose and certain pouring devices have been formed for attachment to the box which may also act as closures, and it is a principal purpose of this invention to provide a box hav- 2,741,413 Patented Apr, 10, 1956 ing a dispensing opening therein and a closure for the dispensing opening formed integral with the box so that no separate dispensing means need be applied to the box.
Ordinarily the box 10 will be formed of cardboard or heavy paper material as is customary with boxes of this kind and the closure member on the box will also be formed of the same material as the box so that the box and closure member for the box may be formed at the same time that the box is formed whereby the box and the closure member may be stamped from the same kind of material at the same time thereby providing for the manufacture of the box and the closure member at a low initial cost so that the box and the dispensing member may be distributed to a buyer without any increase in cost to a person using the box.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates generally the box 10 formed of heavy paper or cardboard material of which the box is initially stamped to the desired shape before being folded in forming a box. The box 1! is provided with a front wall 11 and a rear wall 12 formed integral with one side wall 13 and an opposite side wall 14. There is also provided a top wall 15 turned inwardly from the upper edge of the wall 12, and a second wall 16 which is adapted to overlie the first top wall 15 in the folded position thereof. The top wall 15 is referred to herein as the lower top wall and the top wall 16 as the upper top wall as that will be their operative positions in the fully folded position of the box 10.
The lower top wall 15 is provided with an opening 18 intermediate the length thereof and the upper top wall 16 is provided with a second opening 19 which is movable into registration wth the lower top wall opening 13 in the completed box. As the related walls 16 and 11 are formed integrally during the manufacture of the box 19, the top wall 16 is folded over the top wall 15 with the opening 19 thereof in registration with the opening 18 in the lower top Wall 15, as clearly shown in the drawings.
A slider or closure plate will be interposed between the top walls 15 and 16 at the top of the box 10 for opening and closing the openings 18 and 19 in the registering and overlying top walls 15 and 16. Horizontally aligned flanges 23 are formed on the side walls 13 and 14 between the front wall 11 and the back wall 12, the inner edges 23 thereof forming a guide for the slider 20, which moves therebetween. The main portion of the slider 20 will be substantially less than the width of the upper and lower top walls 15 and 16 and the width of the slider 26 will be substantially less than the width of the side walls 13 and 14 so that a tab 24 formed on the slider 26 will be slidably disposed in the opening 19 to operate as a handle for the closure member 29 and for sliding the slider 20 between the opposite flanges 23 of the top walls 15 and 16.
When the upper top wall 16 is glued to the outer surface of the flanges 23 the closure plate 2 3 may be readily grasped by the fingers of an operator or person using the box 19 for sliding the closure member 29 into closing position relative to the openings 18 and 19 or to an open position whereby the openings 18 and 19 will be in an open registering position whereby material may be poured from the box or otherwise dispensed.
By being formed of the same material as the box, the slider 26 and the tab 24 are preferably formed of heavy paper or cardboard, with the tab 24 connected to the closure member 29 as a hinge of paper, so that the tab 24 may be moved to a position overlying the front wall 11 with the closure member 20 in its closed position preventing the free distribution of material through the registering openings 18 and 19.
When the closure member 26 is moved to its closing position overlying the openings 18 and 1?, the tab 24 may extend outwardly from the box it? and be folded into overlying'position' with the front wall where it is secured in-its attached position by a tab 25 Wi- 'ch is glued, byl removable plastic material. When it is t to open the box It) the tab 25 is removed from tab and tab 24 is swung upwardly to a substantially vertical position; Tab 24 With slider or valve 2% are then moved inwardly to the inner edges of openings 18 and 1'9.
Other and further objects and advantages of tion will be hereinafter describedand the novel fea thereof defined in'thea'ppend'ed claim.
I'claim:
In a'fibrons box having front and rear walls, onnosite side walls and a bottom Wall, an inner top wall Lite with-said rearwall, opposed'fla'nges integral with sidewallsand overlying-said inner top wall, a rectan;- valve plate slidable between said flanges, enter wall extending from said front Wall and fixed in overlyingsposition to said flanges, said inner and outer top walls having registering discharge openings extending inwardly from said front wall, a tab integral with said against the inner end of said opening in said outer top Wall, and a removable tab earried'by said front wall and envageable over said first named tab in the depending L ion of the latter for sealing said valve in closed position.
