(Cl. 22'2346) This invention relates to containers made of sheet material, and is more particularly concerned with featured panel parts of the wall structure of the container, pre pared in a novel manner for embodiment therein of a primary featured performed product unit premeasuring,
dispenser receptacle adapted for use in dispensing a precisely premeasured unit amount of the particular product from the packed container, and which may be repeated in actuated cycles of such unit product delivery from the container as desired.
.One of the prime objects of the present invention is to provide in a container of the above type, novel arrangements made in a sectional part of an enclosure wall thereof for embodiment therein of the featured unit premeasure dispenser receptacle adapted to be rotated in actuated oscillating movements outwardly and inwardly of the :interior of the container for dispensing purpose.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hollow constructed unit premeasuring dispenser receptacle of predetermined volume capacitysuitable for handling granular, powdered or other dry products intended for the container, and of wall form adapted to be actuated by oscillated movements for dispensing the product when the receptacle is embodied into the container.
Still anothenobject of the invention is to provide novel coupling means for the dispenser receptacle with a wall section of the container, adapted for manual manipulation .of the receptacle to serve its dispensing purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel blank outlined and cut from relatively thin bendable sheet material used in forming the above dispenser receptacle.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a container blank of foldable sheet material having wall panels so arranged that when forming the container by folding the blank, one of the side walls of the container is formed of two panels secured together in overlapping relationship, each of the panel layers having preparation that coordinate in their relationship to provide coupling means for the dispenser receptacle when embodied therein.
Another object of the invention isto provide a container blank made of paper-plastic sheet material and having two end closure forming panels, each prepared in a novel manner to be coordinated in overlapped relationship when forming the container with its end closure constructed for reception therein of a preformed unit premeasure dispenser receptacle, and having coordinating coupling means adapted for the embodied receptacle to be actuated for its dispensing purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means of coupling a prefabricated unit premeasure dis penser receptacle into a recipient hole opening in a twoply sectional wall portion provided in a container, and of limited boundary surface area that frames the hole opening, and the outer-ply wall frame adapted to be cleanly released from the inner frame surface area con stituting the coupling means.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a folding carton side wall an adaptation for coupled embodiment therein of a preformed dispenser receptacle adapted to be manually actuated and deliver from the carton premeasured unit amounts of its intended contents, the carton side wall further provided with an auxiliary port closure adapted to be opened. supplementing the dis" 3,187,961 Patented June 8, 1965 'ice penser receptacle for salvaging the dregs of the carton contents.
Other objects and novel features of the invention will .appear more fully hereinafter from the following detailed .refer to similar parts of the several views;

The present invention is directed to a first phase of providing novel means of preparing a container enclosure wall for embodiment therein of a featured preformed unit premeasure dispenser receptacle for the utility use of the container, the dispenser receptacle constituting the second phase of the invention. And whereby, the form of the dispenser receptacle is provided with facilities that will coordinate with the wall panel parts prepared in an enclosure wall of the container, and when coupled together, the embodied dispenser receptacle is sealed into the container. The embodiment further provides for the dispenser receptacle to be manually released and actuated outwardly and inwardly of the container coupled in a manner whereby, the registering movements of oscillating j the receptacle for dispensing purpose can not become clogged nor fouled by any sifting particles of the product from the container exceptas orderly Withdrawn therefrom by the actuated dispenser receptacle.
Accordingly, a container blank is contemplated by the invention as having side wall forming panels with end closure forming elements, the blank provided with an extra panel to be coordinated with one of the other panels j adapted to be associated together in overlapped united relationship and form one side wall of the container when folding the blank into the body form of the container. The one side wall having been prepared with means for assembly with the above mentioned dispenser receptacle having a hollow body of predetermined volume capacity such as the equivalent handled by a teaspoon, tablespoon or cup ounces of the particular product that is intended to .be dispensed from thecontainer.
Referring more particularly to FIG. 1, the present invention is illustrated therein as including a container blank 4 which is separated by means of scored lines 5, into rectangular wall panels 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, the panels 7, 8, 9 and 1d are provided with opposite end closure forming elements defined by the scored lines 11, 12 and 13. The panel 6 is provided with a rectangular shaped recipient hole 14 having straight side edges 15 disposed in parallel relationship and likewise opposed end edges 16. An open cut slot 17 is provided through the panel in upwardly spaced relation to the upper end edge 16 of the hole 14.
A pair of perforated cut lines 18 are also provided with each line being outwardly spaced and parallel with the cut edges 15 of the hole 14. The cut lines 18 being extended upwardly of a'transversely disposed scored line 19 which forms a base hinge of a panel portion defined by the'perforated lines which'in turn terminate at the end edge of the slot 17. The panel 6 is also provided with a horizontal scored line 21 disposed inwardly of the end edge 22 ofthe panel. A pair of opposed perforated cut lines 23 are extended downwardly of each terminal end of the transverse scored line 21 and terminating at the cut end edge 24 which defines the top of a cut hole 25 provided through the panel. The cut openings 17 and 25 are provided to gain handling access to the end edges V and 24 respectively when the panel 6 is combined with the panel 10 in forming the body walls of the container. The panel 10 is provided with a recipient hole 26 having a pair of opposed straight side edges 27 and a pair of transversely disposed end edges 28. The recipient holes 14 and 26 are each located dimensionally in their respective'panels to match each other when the panels are overlapped in their two-ply relationship. Another rectangular inwardly of the scored line 12 that defines the top end of the panel. Selective areas of the exterior surface of the panel 1@ is coated with a surface bonding resistance material such as a clear nitro-cellulose lacquer printed or otherwise applied upon the panel, the lacquer being free of thermoplastic properties. One selective area 3th so coated is defined as having outlined border edges 31 dimensionally established to match with the defined lines 13, 19, and the top end edge of the open slot 17 in the panel 6. The other selective surface area 32 is coated with the above mentioned lacquer having outlined border edges 33 established dimensionally for being matched in relationship with the defining lines 21, 23 and 24 provided in the panel 6. The coated surface area 32 on the panel 10 is interrupted by a free border lined area 34 which crosses the patterned area 32 adjacent the lower end edge of the hole 29 for a purpose hereinafter to be described. The panel 6 may be provided with the end folding elements instead of the panel 10 if desired.
Referringnow to FIG. 2 it will be noted that the container blank has been folded to form a container of substantially rectangularcross.section with its bottom end closed as shown. The panel 1d underlies the panel 6 in seam forming relationship and their respective recipient openings 14 and 2d disposed in substantial edge alignments for the reception therein of a prefabricated unit premeasu-re dispenser receptacle 35 in the manner illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4. In this instance the prefabricated dispenser receptacle may be made of molded plastic material or be formed of thin metallic sheet material such as aluminum or other metallic sheet ranging in thickness from 0.006 to 0.016 inch. As illustrated in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 the receptacle 35 consists of a body formed V-shape and consisting of two opposed sector shape openly spaced side walls 36 having curvilinear end edges 37, and these Walls being joined with a flanged base transverse end wall 325 and an angular opposed trailer end wall 39. The slope of these end walls form a triangle of approximately degrees for an example The said end walls, in turn, having a relatively narrow width longitudinal bottom end wall portion 4% of radial shape surface contour that forms a blunt apex end of the receptacle. The
, dimensional radius for the radial wall portion 40 and the radius of the curvilinear end edges 37 is'defined by the distance measured from the scored line fulcrum point 19 to the bottom end edge 28 of the recipient hole opening 26, and from the line 19 to the top end edge 23 thereof respectively, characterized by the viewof FIG. 5. The base end wall 38 is provided with a lateral flange 41 projected outwardly of its transversely disposed side edges constituted by the wall portions 36 and 4d. The trailer end wall 39 is extended outwardly of the terminal end edges 37 of the side walls 36 in order to provide a stop gate margin 42 to function'as illustrated in FIG. 5.
Again referring to FIGS. 3 and 4, the inner shoulder surfaces of the flanges 41 of the receptacle may be coated with a suitable adhesive, or alternatively is desired, the adhesive may be applied upon the flange engaging corresponding exterior surface portion of the panel6 that frames the recipient hole opening. The dispenser receptacle 35 is installed into the container by first sliding its trailer end wall 39 through the recipient hole to enter its radial end wall section 40 into the edge 28 of the hole which engages the circular end edges 37 of the side walls into contact with the opposite end edge of the recipient hole as illustrated in FIG. 3. The flanged wall 38 of the receptacle is then moved inwardly which rotates the body thereof downwardly into the hole thereby placing the flanges 41 upon the exterior surface of the side wall panel 6 of the container as shown in FIG. 4. The applied adhesive secures the flanges 41 upon the releasable panel portion 43 of the panel wall 6 defined by its perforated cut lines 18. Thus, the premeasure dispenser receptacle is coupled into the container in such manner that it can be oscillated outwardly and inwardly of the interior of the container as illustrated in FIG. 5. It will be observed that the fulcrum for oscillating movements of the coupled receptacle is established by the score line 19 of the panel portion 43 that supports the receptacle. Therefore the radial end wall 40 of the receptable cannot be disengaged from its snugly fitted contact with the corresponding end edge 28 of the coupling hole 26. Due to this novel feature of con struction the curvilinear end edges 37 of the receptacle cannot be disengaged from their respective snugly fitted contact with the corresponding top end edge 28 of the hole. Itwill be further observed that the outwardly rotated movement of the dispenser receptacle is stopped by its inner disposed trailer end wall margin 42 arrested by its contact upon the inner surface of the panel wall of .the container as illustrated in FIG. 5, the end wall 39 coacting to close the hole 26. The exterior surface of the sector shaped side walls 36 are maintained in snugly fitted relationship with theside edges 27 of the recipient hole 26. It is to be noted by those skilled in the art of making .containers that the edges of the hole 26 in the panel 10 constitutes thecriterion sized opening through which the receptacle is oscillated and for this reason adimensional plus tolerance is permitted in the size established for the related hole 14 in the panel 6 whereby the hole edge alignments of the two related hole openings 14 and 26 as shown in FIG. 2 need not be considered a problem to make these alignments when folding the blank to form the container by conventional methods.
In forming the container of the blank 4 the hole 29 in the panel 10 is overlapped by the releasable wall portion 44 in the panel 6 and secured in seam forming relationship as shown in FIG. 6 which illustrates the completed product filled and sealed container. The panels 6 and 10 I ,now constitutes the dispenser embodied side wall of the container surface bonded together in seam forming relationship. Yet, the precoated surface areas 30 and 32 on the inner panel 10 hereinbefore described are cohesively united with the panel 6 thereby providing means for effecting a clean release of the previously described releasable wall portions 43 and 44. To actuate the initially sealed in dispenser receptacle 35, the end edge 26 (FIG. 6) made accessible by its related slot 17, and by manual manipulation loosen this end edge 20 as shown in dotted lines. Then by pulling upon the loosed margin outwardly and downwardly the pair of perforated cut lines 18 are caused to sever apart thereby releasing the panel portion 43 from its cohered relationship with its parent :panel .6 while simultaneously causing the coupled product filled receptacle to rotate outwardly of the product filled container from its fulcrum aligned hinge 19. During this rotated movement, the end edge 28 of the recipient hole 26 serves to level off the product uniformly in surface relationship with the circular shaped open mouth end edges 37 of the filled receptacleas illustrated in FIG. 7. In suchmanner of withdrawing the product from the container, the unit delivery thereof has been precisely premeasured in the amount according to the volume holding capacity initially established for the particular receptacle duty requirement. By tilting the container in .a position as shown in FIG. 8 the filled receptacle is emptied of its unit filled amount of product. As illustrated, the inner disposed trailer end wall 39 of the receptacle coacts to stop its rotated movement and simultaneously close the hole through which the receptacle is rotated while discharging its unit measured amount of product. The severed-released wing panel 43 is rendered rigid-by its mounted and securedreceptacle and, thereby is stabilized to swing straight in a radial arc movement from itsfulcrum line 19 and oscillate the receptacle in them from fraying by their friction imposed engagements with the walls and edges of the dispenser receptacle.
The container is further provided with means to remove therefrom the last remnants of its contents independently of the dispenser. In this respect the sealed port closure 44 shown in FIG. 6 is provided for the above purpose and thereby avoids the necessity of manipulating the container into various angular positions in an endeavor to get the last remaining portion of the product into the dispenser receptacle for final delivery. The convenient port closure thus provided is sealed in a novel manner to withstand rough handling, yet be easily opened. 'This is accomplished by providing a border line bonded seal across the precoated area 32 on the panel 10 as previously described. This bonded borderline seal is indicated by the spaced lines 34 shown on the panel 10 of the blank in FIG. 1. Upon sealing the panel section 44 over the hole 29 this bonded line seal keeps the panel 44 cohesively united upon its corresponding precoated surface engagement as shown inFIG. 6. The port closure may be easily opened with the fingers and expose the open port as shown in FIG. 9 for the purpose of salvaging the last remaining portion of the container contents.
A modification contemplated by the invention is illustrated in FIG. 10 wherein there is shown a pair of crossed blanks adapted for forming a hermetic container having enclosure Walls combined with thermoplastic film material, such as polypropylene, polyethylene, or other grades suitable for protection of dry powdered milk, dehydrated foodstuffs, and including pharmaceutical and cosmetic products in powder, crystal or granular form. The integral end closure of the container is provided with means for coupling embodiment of the hereinbefore described dispenser receptacle. The container may be providedwith taper nesting side walls whereby the containers can be shipped economically to packer plants and prior to being packed, the dispenser receptacle be embodied into the prepared end closure of the container by simply inserting it into the closure. To this end, the central panel-portions of the blank overlapped assembly 45 is provided with a recipient hole 46 having opposite pairs of aligned side edges 47 and 48. The outer panel portion 49 is provided with a pair of perforated cut lines 50 initiated at a transversely disposed grooved line 51 and extended to traverse the panel and its flange margin 52 of the outer blank component. The exterior surface of the underlying panel portion 53 is provided with a coated area 54 of non-thermoplastic heat resistant lacquer, the area corresponding with the surface area that is defined within the cut lines 50 and groove line 51 in the overlying panel portion49. The lacquer coated surface is interrupted by a free border line 55 spaced outwardly of and in parallel with the creased folding line 56 of the panel flange. A laterally extended panel portion 57 of the inner disposed blank component is provided with a U-shaped cut slit line 58 underlying the flange 52 that is provided with a releasable tab portion 59 defined with a pair of oppositely disposed cut lines 60 extending transversely between the slit line 58 and end edge of the flange.
FIG. 11 illustrates the container 61 as formed of the blank assembly 45with its integral end wall closure comand maintained so united by the panel joining perforated lines 50 and borderline seam formed by the line spaced area 55 shown across the coated surface 54 in FIG. 10. Thus, the hole border framed panel portion and its flange defined by the cut lines 50 and hinged base end 51 is adapted to be cleanly released without being mutilated. A modified unit measuring dispenser receptacle 62 illustrated in FIG. 13 may be inserted into the recipient hole 46 in the same manner hereinbefore described for the assembling of the dispenser receptacle 35 into the container as illustrated in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5. The coupled dis- 1 the empty receptacle to take its closing position back into the container. In closing the receptacle the tab 59 may be inserted into the slit line 58 and'thereby latch and retain the dispenser receptacle in'tightly closed position made substantially tight by its contact upon the lacquer coated median surface, thereby serving to close the container in a manner to afford continued protection of its contained product. This closed and latched actuating panel portion of the dispenser receptacle is illustrated in MG. l5.
U hereinbefore described and illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, the coated surface of the flanges 79 upon being activated, secures the dispenser receptacle by its flanges bonded upon the exterior face of its coupled releasable and actuating wing panel section provided in the end closure wall of the container.
When the container is intended to be packed with bulk tea or other stringy type of product, the dispenser receptacle 62 (PIG. 13) may be slightly modified in the manner illustrated in FIG. 16. In this instance, the end wall 69 is altered by bending its projected end margin 72 in FIG. 16. In this instance, the end wall 6? is altered by bending its projected end margin 72 inwardly of the open The modified unit premeasure dispenser receptacle 62 shown in FIG. 13 is combined with an appropriated base end plate 63, after the bodyenclosure walls of the receptacle are formed of the blank 64 illustrated in FIG.12. The outline shape of the blank as illustrated may be cut from metallic sheet material such as thin aluminum :hereinbefore referred to.
The blank 64 is defined as having five wall forming areas constituted by an end wall panel portion 65 defined by its indicated bending lines 66 disposed in nniform parallel relationship and another transversely disposed indicated bending line 67 opposed by the parallel related end edge 68. Another end wall panel portion 6h extends longitudinally outward of its portion 65 and is separated by an intermediate wall portion 70 defined by another indicated parallel bending line 71 openly spaced outwardly of the line 67. The extended wall portions having parallel side edges, the defining trailer end wall portion 69 being marginally extended slightly to its end edge-72. The wall portion 65 is associated with a pair of outwardly opposed winglike side wall forming panels 73, each defined as having an outer curvilinear top end edge '74 and an inner radial bottom end edge 75. The center point (a) of their respective radius is taken on the vertical center line of the longitudinal wall portion 70 bisected by the line of each of its opposite side edges. The angular end edges 76 of each wing-like wall portion 73 are sloped at an arbitrary angle of 60 with respect to each of the bending lines 66. The parallel indicated bending line 77 disposed inwardly of the end edge 76 defines a bendable flange portion 78 of the side wall '73. By the use of suitable forming fixtures the blank 64- as defined may be formed into the body structure of the dispenser receptacle as shown inFlG. 13. The bent flanges 78 of the side walls 73 maybe bonded upon the exterior border surface portions or the trailer end wall 69 by activated thermoplastic material applied upon either of these contacting surfaces, or if desired, be otherwise secured together. The base end plate 63 may be precoated upon its interior surface with the thermoplastic material and be centrally bonded upon the exterior surface of the end wall 65. Hence, the
- projected border margins of the bonded end plate constitute the surface coated-flanges 79 that correspond substantially with the frame and surface area that surrounds the recipient hole 46 provided in the container end wall structure. And whereby, upon inserting the dispenser receptacle into the recipient hole opening inthe manner mouth of the receptacle thereby forming a cutter ledge 72 having its top surface coplanar with the surface of the top end edges of the side Walls 73' of the receptacle. The pair of bent flanges 7 8 (FIG. 13) being extendedupwardly of the ledge 72 and thereby provide a stop 78' for the trailer end wall 69 as illustrated in FIG. 16. Accordingly, the altered dispenser receptacle is provided with novel means whereby, during its actuated rotating movement outwardly of the container, the ledge 72' across the open mouth of the receptacle cuts off the stringy product in the container as it enters into the hole at its top end edge 48', which end edge is utilized to level oil the surface of the product as withdrawn by the receptacle. And whereby, the ledge engagement with the end edge constituting the means to cut off the product for the trailerend wall of the receptacle to shut otf the recipient hole during the discharge of the premeasured product in the dispenser receptacle.
In view of the foregoing described method of coupling the unit premeasuring dispenser receptacle into the wall structure of containers, the present invention contemplates means for embodiment of the dispenser receptacle into a single thickness side wall of the particular container. This may be accomplished by mounting the receptacle into a recipient hole opening provided in an appropriated sheet of separate material of two-ply thickness, and each ply thereof being prepared in a manner that will duplicate the recipient hole .and frame panel surface arrangements provided in each of the panels 6 and 10 respectively, and as hereinbefore described, and illustrated on the blank 4 in FIG. 1. By such preparation of the appropriated sheet there is provided a self contained unit assembly of the coupled dispenser receptacle that may be adhesively attached upon the surface of the container wall that is to be initially provided with a clearance hole for the reception of the projected body'part of the receptacle.
While modifications of the invention have been illustrated and described in considerable detail, it is to be understood, by those skilled in the art, that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention. Reference will therefore be had to the appended claims for a definition of the limits of the invention.
What is claimed is: j V
1. In a carton for flowable material, a two-ply wall, the inner ply of said wall being provided with a hole having v two pairs of opposed edges, the outer ply of said Wall having a panel overlying said hole and connected to the remainder of said outer ply along a hinge line, said panel panel and extending into said carton through said registered holes, said receptacle comprising a pair of opposed spaced-apart sides extending between one of said pairs of edges and adjacent to the other pair in slidable contact therewith, inner and outer walls arranged at an angle to each other joining said sides, each of said sides being shaped substantially like the sector of a circle and having a relatively long ar-cuatefree edge and a shorter arcuate V edge concentric with said long edge, an arcuate wall joining the shorter edges of said sides, said receptacle being pivotable outwardly by swinging said panel outwardly about said hinge line, said hinge line passing through the centers of curvature of said relatively long arcuate edges of said receptacle sides and said arcuate Wall, and said receptacle sides and the hole in said inner ply being so relatively sized that said long arcuate edges remain in contact with one of said one pair of hole edges and said ar'cuate wall remains in contact with the other of said one pair of hole edges throughout the pivoted movement of said panel and receptacle.
2. In a cart-on, the elements defined in claim 1 wherein said outer wall of said receptacle presents a flange extending beyond said sides, said flange serving to limit the inward movement of said receptacle when the latter is inserted through the holes in said panel and inner ply during assembly of said receptacle with said carton, and means securing said flange to the outer face of said panel.
3. In a car-ton, the elements defined in claim 1 wherein said panel is defined by a pair of perforated lines on either side of said hole in said panel, one end of each of said perforated lines terminating at said hinge line, and a free cut edge at the end of said panel opposite said hinge line 1 0 joining the other ends of said perforated lines, whereby said receptacle may be pivoted out of said carton by lifting said free edge of said panel and swinging said panel outwardly by separating it from the remainder of said outer ply along said perforated lines.
4. In a carton, the elements defined in claim 1 including a cutter carried by the inner wall of said dispenser receptacle, said cutter being cooperable with said one of said one pair of edges of the hole in said'inner ply upon outward pivotal movement of said receptacle.

Claims (1)

1. IN A CARTON FOR FLOWABLE MATERIAL, A TWO-PLY WALL, THE INNER PLY OF SAID WALL BEING PROVIDED WITH A HOLE HAVING TWO PAIRS OF OPPOSED EDGES, THE OUTER PLY OF SAID WALL HAVING A PANEL OVERLYING SAID HOLE AND CONNECTED TO THE REMAINDER OF SAID OUTER PLY ALONG A HINGE LINE, SAID PANEL BEING OTHERWISE SEPARABLE FROM SAID OUTER PLY SO THAT IT MAY BE PIVOTED ABOUT SAID HINGE LINE, SAID PLIES BEING PERMANENTLY SECURED TOGETHER EXCEPT IN THE REGION OF SAID PANEL WHEREBY SAID PANEL IS FREE TO BE PIVOTED AWAY FROM SAID INNER PLY, SAID PANEL HAVING A HOLE IN REGISTRY WITH THE HOLE IN SAID INNER PLY, AND A DISPENSER RECEPTACLE FORMED COMPLETELY INDEPENDENTLY OF SAID CARTON SECURED TO SAID PANEL AND EXTENDING INTO SAID CARTON THROUGH SAID REGISTERED HOLES, SAID RECEPTACLE COMPRISING A PAIR OF OPPOSED SPACED-APART SIDES EXTENDING BETWEEN ONE OF SAID PAIRS OF EDGES AND ADJACENT TO THE OTHER PAIR IN SLIDABLE CONTACT THEREWITH, INNER AND OUTER WALLS ARRANGED AT AN ANGLE TO EACH OTHER JOINING SAID SIDES, EACH OF SAID SIDES BEING SHAPED SUBSTANTIALLY LIKE THE SECTOR OF A CIRCLE AND HAVING
