Furthermore as well known, folding cartons can not be hermetically sealed and therefore must rely upon inner liner -and overwrap augmenting materials in order to protect theparticular product intended for distribution.
It is a general'object of the present invention to pro- *vide anovel device embodiment in a container that upon being manually manipulated will deliver from the container a premeasured unit amount of its particular con- -tents, and in unit sequence.
Another object of the invention is to embody the 'prem'easuring dispenser receptacle in the structure of an -improvedend closure construction for the particular con- "'tainer.
Afurther object of the invention is toprovide novel means whereby the dispenser receptacle is embodiedin a folding carton following its fabrication by conventional methods and machinery.
A still further object of the invention is to provide coacting means established by utilizing the closure forming elements of the container to function jointly with the premeasuri'ng dispenser receptacle whereby the closure assembly is sealed in a manner to be leakproof yet be manually manipulated to cleanly open and dispense only a premeasured amount of the container contents, after which, the closure maybe restored in tight condition and the dispenser receptacle be recharged.
Another object of the invention provides for a plastic hermetically sealed closure housing the dispenser receptacletherebyrendering the plastic lined container suitable 'for'holding and dispensing a wide variety of mois ture sensitive powdered and granular products.
These and other objects will be evident upon a consideration of the following description of the preferred embodiments of the invention and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. :1 is a fragmentary plan View of a blank used for forming a carton-like container as shown in FIG. 2, the blank being provided with a pair of specially arranged closure forming panel elements.

An embodiment of the unique preme'asuring dispenser device comprehended by the present invention is illustrated as beingeasily adapted for embodiment in folding carton type containers. Various forms of blanks 'used for forming'folding cartons can be easily modified to-form this novel dispensing closure on general equipment and by conventional methods employed for fabricating and closing such containers augmented, however, by slightly involved modifications to be made in the closure forming opera-ting equipment. The inventionfurther contemplates novel improvements made to containers rendering them suitablefor be'ingusefully employed for distributing products such as powdered milk, bulk tea, baking powder and soda, cocoa, spices, salt, dry cereals such as oatmeal and etc.; and including powdered detergents, soap powder, and soap flakes. Also for a variety of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products in powdered or granular form. The dispenser receptacle embodied in the closure of the container as illustrated or otherwise applied in a wall of the container is capable of delivering the particular product from the container in units equivalent in a fixed amount to a teaspoon, tablespoon or cup according to the initialspecification made for the particular size of the dispenser service. Hereinafter the term receptacle will be referred to as unit.
Referring to the drawings, the blank 4 of FIG. 1 illustrates a simple form of a cut and creased carton forming blank provided with a pair of closure forming panel elements modified in accordance with the invention. The lower portion of the blank (not shown) may be provided vwith any suitable plain closure forming elements desired for forming the other end of the carton. The body side walls of the carton are formed of the panels 5, 6, 7 and 8. A marginal extension 9 of the panel 8 provides the means to secure its panel portion to the panel 5. The panels and 7 are provided with the marginal flaps 10 and 11 defined by their respective score lines 12 and 13. The panel 8 is provided with a closure forming panel element 14 defined by its score line 15 which is aligned upwardly of the adjacent score line 13. This panel is provided with U-shape open cut section defined by its base edge 16, parallel side edges 17 and end edges 18. A U-shape slit 19 is cut through the panel parallel between the score line 15 and edge 16. The side wall forming panel 6 is provided with another closure forming panel element 20 defined by the score line 21 aligned upwardly of the score line 15. This panel 20 is provided with a pair of opposed perforated cut lines 22 extending between the score line 21 and end edge 23 of the panel. These cut lines 22 define a severable section 24 of the main panel 20. The section is provided with a score line 25 extending transversely between the cut lines 22 and spaced downwardly of the end edge 23 of the full panel 20. This spacing defines a marginal flange 26 having a pair of opposing severable cut lines 27 extended transversely between the score line 25 and end edge 23 thus defining a tab portion 28 of the flange. The panel severable section 24 is provided with a slit line 29 through the panel and spaced downwardly of and in parallel with the score line 25. Another slit line 30 is provided through the panel section spaced upwardly in parallel with the score line 21.
The surfaces of the blank may be coated or otherwise treated with suitable protective material. The inner surface may be faced with thermoplastic film such as polyethylene, polypropylene or other film forming materials as may be specified for a particular service duty required of the carton or container.
The carton 31 of FIG. 2 is illustrated as having been formed of the blank 4 and its bottom end formed and closed by conventional equipment. However if desired, the dispenser closure may be first formed and the carton filled through its bottom end and then the closure be formed and closed as the case may be. To form the dispenser closure in accordance with a novel method contemplated by the invention it consists of forming a structure in which the panel element 20 in FIG. 3 is folded outwardly in a substantially horizontal plane to bring its inner surface in up-faced position. While confined in this position the premeasuring dispenser unit 32 is placed upon the surface of the panel as illustrated. The unit 32 is preferably made of thin aluminum sheet .004 to .016 inch thickness depending upon its size and duty requirements.
Its shape as may be fabricated is defined as having substantially right angular end wall portions 33 and 34 joined with a pair of opposing sector shaped open side walls 35 bent upwardly of the base end wall 34. The vertical end wall 33 is extended upwardly of the are or circular ends edges 38 of the side walls 35 for a pulpose hereinafter to be described. The wall portion 34 is provided with an end flange 36 bent downwardly at right angles thereof. Another flange 37 is punched from the wall 34 spaced outwardly from the apex formed of the walls 33, 34 and bent downwardly to be in parallel with the flange 36. These flange members are inserted through the respective slit lines 29 and 30 provided in the supporting panel 20. Accordingly, the unit 32 locates itself in proper position upon the panel and is secured thereupon by bending the inserted flanges 36 and 37 inwardly and upwardly in unit clamping relationship as shown in FIG. 5. The sector shaped Walls may be end flanged inwardly at right angles to engage with corresponding border margins of the back end surface of the vertical end wall 33 and be secured thereto as indicated by the dotted line 38. Thus, the unit element 32 is accurately located and firmly attached to the panel 20 by a simple assembly operation.
The closure is formed by first folding the elements 10 inwardly and downwardly of their respective side walls. The panel 20 is brought upwardly into a vertical position as shown in FIG. 4. While confined in this position the panel 14 is folded inwardly and downwardly upon the ledge of forming elements 10. The side end edges 17 of the panel 14 are snugly fitted in contact with the exterior surfaces of the unit sector shaped side walls 35. The base end edge 16 of the panel is also brought into tight engagements with the terminal ends of the circular shaped end edges 38' of the dispenser unit as the panel is brought into contact upon the ledges 10, and the projected portion 33' of the unit wall 33 is now disposed within the interior of the container. The end edges 18 of the folded panel are tightly abutted upon the opposing side wall 6. I have found it desirable to have these abutted end edges adhesively secured upon the interior surface of the opposing side wall. The panel 20 with its secured dispenser unit 32 is then folded inwardly and downwardly upon the exterior surface landings of the panel 14 as shown in the progressive steps illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6. The closure is then adhesively sealed in leak-proof condition. The premeasuring dispenser unit is now disposed within the interior of the carton 31.
The product packed container 31 with its completed closure is shown in FIG. .7 ready to be opened. This is accomplished by manually loosening the yieldable flange 26 for finger grasping and by pulling it outwardly will progressively separate the perforated lines 22 thereby releasing the panel portion 24 to its pivot hinge line of the parent panel 20, thereby causing the product filled dispenser unit 32 to progressively rotate outwardly as illustrated in FIG. 8 shown in a stage position of its progressive movement. It will be observed that the edge 16 of the closure wall 14 serves the function of a doctor blade to level off the particular product to accurate measure as it is taken by the dispenser unit from the container. This edge 16 coacts with the scraper edges 17 which edges bear snugly upon the side walls 35 of the dispenser unit thereby insuring against any-leak of the container contents except as conveyed by the dispenser unit in its accurately premeasured amount, and which may be repeated in sequence. A clean release of the panel section 24 may be accomplished by pre-treating the exposed surface areas of the panel 14 as shown stippled in FIG. 8 representing an applied coating of suitable material that will cause cohesion rather than a firm bonding of these defined panel areas initially related together with the panel 20. The flange 26 by virtue of being pulled outwardly to rotate the dispenser unit will bend itself along the corner end edge 39 of the unit base wall. In this manner the flange margin 26 plus the adjacent portion of the wall 24 can be further bent to avoid interference with the discharged flow from the dispenser unit.
In FIG. 9 the dispenser unit is shown in its maximum opened position having emptied its premeasured amount of the product taken from the container. It will be observed that the wall portion 33 of the dispenser blocks off the opening in the closure thereby preventing any escape of the container contents during the premeasured discharge. This wall portion 33 is arrested in its move; ment by its projected wall stop 33 disposed in the interior of the container as described and illustrated in FIG. 4.
The opened dispenser closure may 'be restored by tilting the container as illustrated in FIG. 10 so that its con- .tents'will move away from the inner end of the closure wall. The panel24 is pushed inwardly and downwardly being guided by the sector shaped'side Walls 35 and their circular edges 38 of the dispenser unit. I The tab portion 28 of the flange Z6 is severed along its defining cut lines 27 the tab being manually guided to enter into the U-shaped slit line '19 in the panel 14 to form a latch.
The panel portion 24 is then pushed inwardly home upon the surface of'theclosure wall 14. This insertion of the tab tightly restores the closure in latched retained position as shown in FIG..-11 whereby the dispenser unit becomes recharged for subsequent premeasure dispensing .purposesas desired.
As a result of the foregoing illustrations shown and described it will appear obvious that the dispenser unit can be provided to have'a limited range of opening movement as'illustrated by the dispenser 3?. in 'FIG. 12. It
.may be elongated for embodiment in a body side wall of the carton. Should such embodiment 'be required one particular sidewall of the carton maybe formed of two- 'ply wall material and a sectional part of each ply of material 'may'be cut and creased in such manner as to constitute in .p'rincipleit'h'e function exemplified by the relationship devised for the panels 14 and 20.
The present invention contemplates a modification of the premeasuring dispenser unit and its mounting technique as applied in a novel closure construction formed 'of foldable sheet'materiaI married with plastic film material-having thermoplastic properties, such film lining the interior face ofthe container and closure walls. The
film may be polyethylene, polypropylene, vinyls or any other species of a wide variety of plastic materials that will have the desired properties wanted for the container duty requirements.
The modified paperboard and plastic container4i) is illustrated in FIG. 13 as having interior surfaces of its side walls and closure forming elements faced with the thermoplastic film of suitable thickness such as -.Ol75 inch thickness for example. The modified closure forming elements'of the container'consistso'f a pair ofopposed panel 42. The-panel 46 -is-provided with an open cut-out hole defined by its -parallel cut end edges 47 and transversely thereof'the parallelcut'end edges 43. A pair of opposed perforated cut lines-49 are provided in the panel, each out line being parallel and outwardly spaced from the adjacent cut edge 48. The edge 56 defines the end of the panel. It is to be noted that the exterior surface of the panel 42 outlined by the indicating dot and dash lines 51 and 52 is coated with a non-thermoplastic lacquer material or its equivalent having similar properties and for a purpose hereinafter to be described. The lines 51 are also indicated on the blank'FIG. 1. When the panel elements are folded the indicating lines 51 on the panel 42 depict the boundary edges of the coating which aligns with the perforated cut lines 49 in the panel 46.

The panel 46 is then folded inwardly and downwardly upon the exterior face of the first folded panel. This brings the thermoplastic face of the panel 46 in contact with the previously described non-thermoplastic coated area now representing a median coating between the panels 42 and 46. The closure as formed is illustrated in FIG. 14. Prior to the sealing of the closure by imposed heat and pressure upon the panel 46, a;foreign slightly tapered plug may be temporarily inserted into the hole 53 of the constructed closure and at the same time applying pressure inwardly upon the upper-portions .of the opposing side walls as indicated by the arrows (at) and (b) shown in FIG. 14. Heated spring loaded side rails may be employed for this purpose. By such procedure the edges 43, 44 and 47, 48 of the hole 53 are 'ac- While the plug is removed, and by the above mentioned heat and pressure being applied upon the closure panel 46 and sides '(a) and (12'), the thermoplastic filmis activated thereby sealing the closure for-med elements to the sidewalls "of the container. The severable section of the top panel defined inwardly of its cut lines 49' being coher'edin seam forming relationship upon the inner landing surfaceof the panel '42. The otheroutwardly extended areas of the closure being firmly bonded together including the op- :posite end edges of the ledges '41.
FIG. 16 illustrates the modus operandi of assembling the modified measuring dispenser unit 54 with the formed closure illustrated in FIG. 14. The unit 54 may be formed of any suitable plastic material being molded to the desired specified shape and dimensions. The unit form-is similar in :principle to the previously described unit 32 except as to the thickness of its walls and having a larger shouldered wall 59 extended outwardly of its recessed wall portion 55 thereby providing the unit with seating shoulders 56 for mounting the unit element upon the formed closure. The unit as molded of plastic materialmay be semi-rigid or rigid as desired. A wide variety of plastic materials are available for making a proper selection. It is to be expressly understood, however, that other than a plastic molded material may be employed for making the dispenserunit'if found to be advantageous.
Prior to the unit'54 :being inserte'diinto the hole 53 indicated in .FIG. 16 by :its edge portion '47, the exterior border .sur'face surrounding the hole or shoulders 56 of the unit may :be treated with a suitable adhesive. The unit is thenisnugly inserted into :thehole :as :shown cross sectionallyin FIG. .17. The adhesive mentioned secures the unit upon the severable rpanel portion defined by the cut lines-49 in the panel 46. If desired, the container may be filled with its intended product through the hole 53 prior to the inserting of the dispenser unit, which upon being inserted, hermetically seals the closure.
The firm construction of the closure is illustrated in FIG. '15. This form of sturdy structure insures a firm base for snugly'fitting the dispenser .unit in strongly secured registry thereupon and in the hole of the closure.
FIG. 18 "shows the container with its completed hermetic dispenser closure. 'It will 'beobserved that the wall borders 59 of the dispenser form a continuous shoulder outwardly of the hole edges thereby serving the only means necessary for securing the unit 54 in its relationship with the closure. The closure may be opened by releasing the marginal fiange like end 69 of the severable portion of the panel 46 as shown by dotted lines in FIG. 17. This release yields cleanly due to its median surface cohered relationship with the inner panel surface landing 42. By manually pulling the released margin outwardly will cause the preforated lines 49 in the panel wall 46 to sever apart from its other bonded wall portions and at the same time cause a rotating movement of the product charged dispenser ending in the stop position as illustrated in FIG. 19. It can be seen that the dispenser unit functions in the manner of a scoop when being rotated thereby delivering from the container units of its product in a series of precisely premeasured quantity. A pronounced feature of the invention is in the function of the edge 43 coacting with the pair of circular edges 61 of the receptacle which levels off the Withdrawn product from the container in a manner that controls the top surface of the measured quantity thereof to follow the contour of these circular edges, the back end wall 57 of the dispenser closing off the container while discharging its unit contents. The exterior surface of the wall landing 42 is shown stippled to indicate the closure coated median area of the non-thermoplastic material hereinbefore referred to. edges 43 and 44 from being mutilated upon separating the dispenser panel portion in opening the closure. The friction imposed upon the sector shaped walls 61 by these edges above mentioned will retain the reclosure in closed position when pushing the empty dispenser back home into the container for recharging.
The premeasuring dispenser receptacle and the method of forming its embodiments in containers constituting the invention disclosed herein has many attendant advantages that will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, the forms hereinbefore described representing the preferred embodiments.
I claim:
1. In a carton for fiowable material, a wall comprismg:
first folded and second folded overlapping panels,
said first panel provided with a U-shaped open cut section defined by a base edge, parallel side edges, and end edges,
said base edge being spaced from and parallel to the folded edge of said first panel, said parallel side edges being joined at one end at right angles with said base edge, said end edges being joined at right angles with the other ends of said parallel side edges, i said first panel provided with a tab locking slit defined between and parallel to said folded edge and said base edge, said second panel comprising a frangible section and two end sections which are joined to said frangible section by perforated cut lines,
said cut lines extending from and in a direction normal to the folded edge of said second panel to the extreme edge of said second panel, said cut lines being separated by a distance larger than the distance between said parallel side edges of said first panel, said frangible section extending from said folded edge of said second panel to an end edge, said frangible section provided with a score line extending transversely between said This form of treatment prevents the critical cut lines and spaced from said end edge defining between said score line and said end edge a marginal flange,
said marginal flange provided with a tab means,
said tab means, in the overlapping position of said first and second panels, being in register with said tab locking slit,
said frangible section provided with a premeasuring dispenser unit secured to said section and extending into said open cut section of said first panel in the overlapping position of said panels, said dispenser unit including a pair of opposed side and end walls to contain a predetermined volume, said side walls being sector shaped with the curved outer edges thereof engaging said base edge and with the outermost side edges thereof engaging said parallel side edges throughout the pivotal movement of said dispenser unit, said first and second panels being bonded together in overlapping relationship by an adhesive in the area under said end sections of said second panel and by cohesion in the remaining area of said first panel,
whereby said wall is hermetically sealed until said frangible section is initially pulled away from said first panel, separating from said end sections along said out lines, ro tating said dispenser unit through said open cut section to dispense a predetermined volume of said flowable material and said wall is resealed in a leakpr-oof condition upon said frangible section being rotated toward said first panel and said tab being inserted into said tab locking slit. 2. In a carton, the elements defined in claim 1 wheresaid frangible section provided with an open cut-out defined by a pair of opposed parallel cut side edges and transversely thereof by a pair of opposed parallel cut base edges, said out side edges being separated by a distance equal to the distance between said parallel side edges of said first panel, one of said end walls of said dispenser unit being bonded to the exterior surface of said frangible section.
