MEASURING DISPENSER FOR CARTONS Filed July 6, 1950 INVENTOR. 0.5 earl-E y BY Patented Oct. 14, 1952 2,613,856 MEASURING DISPENSER FOR CABTONS 7 Oscar L. Ely, Dorchester, Mass.
Application July 6, 1950, Serial No. I72,265
2 Claims. (01. 222-364) This invention relates to a measuring dispenser for use with cartons for conveniently dispensing measured quantities of flour, soap powder and the like fiowable products from the carton. The dispenser embodies a segmental body having side walls converging to a pivot axis and an arcuate wall with a measuring pocket therein. The dispenser body is conveniently applied to cartons and like containers for pivotal movement into and from the carton. In the closed position of the device the measuring pocket is open to and adapted to be filled with the product in the carton and the product is conveniently emptied from the pocket when the distributor is moved to open position. Other novel and specific features of the invention which contribute to its use are hereinafter more specifically described.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of preferred embodiments thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a carton broken away to show the dispenser in closed position therein,
Fig. 2 shows the dispenser in open position,
Fig. 3 shows the carton in inverted position in which the product therein fills the pocket of the dispenser,
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the carton broken away to show the dispenser, and
Fig. .5 shows a modified form of dispenser unit applied to a carton.
In Figs. 1-4 my improved dispenser is shown as permanently attached to a carton H1. The dispenser includes in its construction a segmental body having two radial walls I2 and I4 converging to a common pivot axis l5 and an outer arcuate wall l6 disposed between the outer ends of said two radial walls and having a pocket l8 Within the body and open through the arcuate wall. The pocket is formed by inner radial walls merging smoothly at their inner ends into a concave connecting portion and the pocket is about centrally spaced in the arcuate wall of the dispenser body so that it has substantial sealing portions of the arcuate wall on both sides. Two fiat segmental sidewalls l1 cooperate with the walls l2, I4 and [6 for enclosing the sides of the body. The dispenser body is applied to one end Wall 20 of the carton in the position illustrated and is secured to this wall by an adhesive strip 22. As thus mounted the dispenser is movable about the pivot axis [5 to and from the closed and open positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
flfl
When the carton is inverted the product within the carton fills the pocket [8 as illustrated in Fig.
-3 and when the dispenser is opened the measured amount of the product can be freely emptied by gravity from the pocket.
The wall I4 is preferably extended to provide a comb 24 for raking through the product and a stop for engaging a stop 26 carried by the carton. The stop 26 is furthermore extended arcuately to form a sealing wall 28 to cooperate with the arcuate wall It and prevent escape of the product from the carton. A pull tab 30 is also provided on the wall l2 for opening the dispenser.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated my dispenser A as applied to and forming part of a unit including an end wall 32 and attached walls 34 for insertion into a carton 36. The wall l2 of the dispenser is pivoted to and becomes a part of the end wall 32 for the carton. In using this unit the end wall is removed from the carton 36 and the unit substituted therefor by inserting the walls 34 thereinto as illustrated in Fig. 5. The operation of this unit is the same as above described in connection with Figs. 1-4.
Having thus disclosed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A dispensing unit for dispensing granulated material from cartons, comprising an end wall, a wall attached thereto for insertion into a carton and supportingthe end wall on the end of the carton, and a segmental body having two walls converging to a common pivot axis for the body,
two side walls cooperating with said two walls for enclosing the sides of the body, and an arcuate wall disposed between the outer ends of said two walls and the side walls and having a pocket within the body open through the arcuate wall and disposed substantially centrally in the arcuate wall with substantial sealing portions thereon on both sides of the pocket, said two walls being attached to the end wall for pivotal movement on said axis and in such position that one of said two walls forms an extension of the end wall when the body is pivoted to closed position in a carton, the body being pivotally movable into and out of the carton about said axis.
2. In a carton for dispensing granulated material having an apertured end wall; a dispensing unit comprising a segmental body having two radial walls converging to a common pivot axis for the body, two flat segmental side walls cooperating with the said two radial walls for enclosing the sides of the body, an arcuate wall disposed between the outer ends of the said two radial walls and the side walls and having a reentrant pocket within the body opening through the arcuate wall thereof and disposed substantially centrally in the arcuate wall leaving substantial sealing portions thereof on both sides of the pocket, said radial walls being attached to the end wall of the carton for pivotal movement about said axis and in such position that one of said radial walls forms an extension of the end wall when the bodyis swung to closed position in the carton, the body being pivotally movable into and out of the carton about said axis, and one of said radial walls being extended to form a comb for raking through the product and a stop for limiting the opening movement of the dispensing unit.
