INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 14, 1937 UNITED STATES PATE-NToFFICE i PoUmNG AND MEASURING DEVICE Victor T. Milward, Dayton, Wyo.
Application March 30, 1936, Serial No. 71,715
2 Claims.
This invention relates to pouring and measuring devices especially adapted for dispensing materials from boxes and containers wherein wastage will be reduced to a minimum and has for the primary object the provision of a simple, durable and efficient device of this character, which will be cheap to manufacture and may be readily adapted to a box or container after the forming of a discharge opening therein to normally close said opening and to permit discharge of the box or container content in measured amount and without waste by simply inverting or tilting the box or container.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional View showing a pouring and measuring device adapted to a box or container and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating an attaching plate and its tongue.
Figure 4 is a perspective View illustrating a measuring device or hopper to be connected to the plate and receive the tongue.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective View, partly in section, showing the device adapted to a box or container with the lid. in an open position.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly in section, showing the lid as being pivotally mounted instead of slidably mounted, as shown in Figure 5.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the nuf meral I indicates a conventional type of box or container in which may be sold soap powders, foods, salt or the like and in order to obtain from said box or container its contents it is customary to tear or form an opening 2 in the top thereof and in order to normally close this opening to prevent entrance of foreign matter and moisture and to facilitate the dispensing of the contents my invention is adapted to the box or container and consists of a plate 3 having an opening 4 positioned over the opening 2. Side and end flanges 5 and 6 are formed on the plate, the end flange 6 contacting one of the end walls of the box or container while the sidel flange 5 contacts opposed walls of the box or container. 'I'he flanges 5 and 6 are disconnected, as shown at 1, so that said anges may be flexed to adapt the plate to boxes varying in dimensions.
The opening 4 is formed in the plate 3 by striking from said plate a tongue 8 which is adapted to protrude into the box or container when the plate is adapted thereto. i
A hopper or dispensing receptacle 9 is adapted to the plate 3 with the tongue 8 protruding therein, as shown in Figure 1. The dispensing receptacle or hopper 9 consists of opposed walls I and II and side walls I2 integral therewith. The opposed walls I and II merge together at one end of the measuring receptacle or hopper for closing said end and the wall I0 terminates short of the wall I I so as to form a space between the tongue and the plate 3 to admit the contents of the box or container I into the hopper. Tongues I2 and I3 are formed on the wall II and the tongue I 2 is bent to engage with the inner face of. the `plate 3, while the tongue I3 is bent to engage the outer face of the plate 3. Tongues I4 are formed on the wall II and are bent to engage the outer face of the plate 3. The tongues I2', I3 and I4 cooperate in firmly anchoring the hopper or dispensing receptacle 9 to theplate 3 and in full communication with the opening 4 of said plate.
A lid I is equipped with side flanges I6 to engage with the flanges 5 of the plate 3. The lid fits over the plate 3 and may be positioned to close the opening 4 and consequently the box or container I or may be slid to open the latter. Instead of slidably mounting the lid I5, a lid I1 may be substituted in lieu thereof and pivotally connected to the plate 3, as shown at I8.
A device of the character described may be readily adapted to a box or container, as shown in Figure 1, and with the lid in an open position and the box or container tilted some of the contents thereof will ilow into the hopper 9 and when the box or container is inverted into an upside-down position the contents which has moved into the hopper may then flow therefrom without danger of spilling.
Having described the invention, I claim:
l. A pouring and measuring device for containers provided with an opening comprising a plate having an opening, gripping flanges on said plate engaging opposite walls of the container adjacent the opening in the container to hold the plate on the container with the said openings in registry, a hopper-like element secured to the plate and in communication With the opening of the plate and with the interior of the container, and a slidable lid for closing said openings having gripping flanges engaging over said ianges on the plate and adapted to slide on the anges of the plate during the opening and closing movements of the lid.
2. A pouring and measuring device for a container provided with an opening comprising a plate having an opening and flanges engaging 10 Walls of the container adjacent the opening there-
