Specification of LettersPatent.

Application filed August 27, 1906.

Patented April 21, 1908. Serial N0. 388,268-

ence marked thereon, which orm a part of this specification. My invention relates to boxes, and more "especially to that class of boxes from which the user dispenses the contents in small quantities, and is designed for use with dry substances, such as smokin tobacco, toilet and tooth powders and the ike, and has for its object a novel construction permitting the contents to be readily dispensed from the can or box while held in one hand.

Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are similarly designated-Figure L is a perspective view illustratin the manner of using the box. Fig. 2 is a li e view showing the lid open and the opening in the front wall. Fig. 3 is a like view of a modification. Fig. 4 shows the hinged end with a curved front wall. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary pers ective of a modified front wall and 100 ing means. Fig. 6 is a pers ective of a box having a curved front wal Wall to enable its use as a Fi 8 is a section of a modification.

he body of the box, constructed of tin,

pasteboard, or the like, may be of any suitable shape or contour, but when used as a holder for tobacco I prefer the usual curved ging box.

bod which when carried in the coat pocket 00 orms to the curvature of the body. Such a box is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, where the body has curved sides a. connected by cylindrical or curved front and rear ends b and 0. Near the to or open end of the box is a head. (1 and in t ese two figures the distance between the upper edge of the box and the bead is reater at the front wall b than at the rear we 0, thus permitting a larger art of the front wall to enter the 11d than 0 the rear wall. I

The front wall I) of the box above the bead (1 base. cutaway portion or opening, here Fig. 7 is a perspective of a similar box having a perforated rec shown as a slot e extending from the upper ed e of the box nearly to the bead.

11 one or both of the sides, if found necessary, I form a guide-way, here shown as a depression or groove f, the center of curvature eing substantially the hinge point of the lid. This groove f is made in the side wall b depressln the body of the metal by a is or any ot 'er suitable means. If desired, this guideway may be a narrow slot, f, Fig. 8, when the contents of the box is sufficiently coarse grained to permit a slot to be used.

At the front of the box between the lower end of the slot e and head (1 I form a punched up portion or teat g, desi nod to enter a similar unched-' portion on the lid when the 1i i, is closed: the spri of the metal permitting the lower edge of t e lid '5 to ass 9 and g to enter h, thus forming a 100 a for the lid.

The lid 1'. conforms to the outline of the box and has a front wall 7c of greater length than the rear wall Z, which latter is hingedat its lower ed e to the body of the box at the bead, preferab y, but not necessarily, in the manner shown in Fig. 4.

In one of the sides of the lid 41 is formed a small depression or stop 8 that enters and travels in the groove or slot f. When a slot is used this ma be a small tang s of metal, cut from the li( or bent inward to engage the slot f, Fig. 8. The stop normally enga es the groove, and the lid is prevented from ing entirely raised by the stop striking the upper end of the groove or slot, and thus the lid is permitted only to be (partially opened, the front wall 7: of the li uncover' the opening e, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit the contents to be poured out or dispensed.

There are two distinct advanta es in a 10!? front wall and a short rear walFto the li The long front wall permits the use of a com paratively long slot or o ening 6, thus per- 'm1tting a comparative y large discharge opening, which is of advanta e ina narrow box, the effective size of the ischarge 0 ening being varied by the extent of the li of the lid, and the dischar e can be entirel cut off by simply closing are lid; The vantage of a short rear wall is that when 0 ning the lid the rear wall 1 of the lid ma es angle with the rear wall a of the box and enters the alm of the hand, so that if the rear wall of t e lid were too long it would be mconvenient to operate with one hand, by reasure of the lid is straight and inclined upwardly from front to rear, and'the opening 6 instead of beinga slot, is a round opemng. In other respects its structure 1s the same as in-Fi 2.

- In Fi 4, 5, 6 and 7, the box has its front wall above the bead curved toward the rear, as shown at m.

In Fig. 4 the hinge comprises ata n integral with the body of the box, and ateral tangs 0 integral with the lid, and a pin passed throu 11 the curled tangs; however, any other suitalfie hinge may be used. I

In Fig. 5 the openin e or hole, is surrounded by a bead p esi ned to enter a similarly contoured embossing g on the 11d. The bead and embossing serve to lock the lid in closed position, and the box has square corners and a horizontal bead d.

In Fig. 6 there is no bead around the opening e, and the box is held closed by an embossing or coiled tanglr on the lower edge of the front of the lid t at takes over the embossed bead d The curvature of the front wall In of the lid and the curved front wall m permit the box to be readily opened. v

In Fi 7 the front wall of the box above the bea has several 0 enings e to permit the powdered contents to e sifted out.

In order to entirely 0 en any of the forms of box shown herein an throw the lid back, as illustrated in Fig. 3, it is simply necessary to press the flexible side wall a or a to move the upper end of the guide-way, groove or slot, away from the stop .9 or s, and swing the lid on its hinge, the wall of the box being thrown out of range of the stop.

I claim 1. A dispensing box having a dispensing opening in its front wall, a li hinged to its rear wall and covering said opening, and means to limit the 0 enin of the lid, to normally prevent the fiont lower ed e of the lid from passing beyond the upper front edge of the box when uncovering the opening, substantially as described.

2. A dispensing box having an. opening in its front wall near the upper edge thereof, and a bead to limitthe closing of the lid, in combination with a lid having a longer front wall than rear wall hinged at the rear Wall to the box, means formed on the wall of the box above the bead cooperating with means on the lid to limit the opening of the lid to uncover said opening in the front wall of the box without uncovering the top of the box, substantially as described.

3. A dispensing box having an open top, a dispensing opening inits front wall, and a tion wi ssae'za groove pressed into a side wall'in combinat a lid hinged to the box and having depending sides and front and a de ression in a side registering with and slidab e in the groove, whereby the raisin of the lid will be normally limited by said epression striking the end of the groove, and when desired the side wall of the box may be pressed inward to release the de ression from the groove, substantially as escribed.

4. A dispensing box havin an open-top, a

dispensing opening in one. 0 its walls and a guide-way formed in one of the walls thereof; in combination with a lid hin ed to the box and covering said opening an top, and means on the lid to take into'said uideway to normally limit the opening of t e lid to uncover the opening in thewall of the box,

substantially as described.

5. A dispensing box having an open top and a bead, and having a dis enslng opening in one of its walls and a gui e-way in one of its walls, both above the bead, in combination with a lid having depending walls and hinged to the box, said lid limited in its closure by the bead and having a portion of the metal of one of its walls entering and slidable in the guideway, and means on the box cooperating with means on the lid to lock the lid in closed position, substantially as described.

6. A dis ensing box havin an open top and a bea extending upwar 1y toward the rear of the box, an opening in lts front wall and an arcuate uidewa m a side wall, in

combination wit r a lid iaving a long front wall and short rear wall connected by side walls seatin on the bead and a depression in one of its si e walls entering the uideway to normally limit the opening of the lid when uncovering the opening in the front wall, an embossing on the box and an embossin on the lid, said embossings' cooperating to lock the lid closed, substantially as described.

7. A dispensing box of flexible sheet material having an open top and a dispensi opening in its front wall, 1n combination wit 1 a lid havin de ending sides and hinged to the rear wal o the boxsand means on the box normally coo crating with the means on the lid to normal y prevent the lid from being raised to uncover the open to and only uncover the dispensin opening, t 1e flexible sheet material being e ressed to disengage said means when desired 8. A dispensing boxhaving a filling open-v flexible side wall and a dispensing o enin in its front Wall, in combination wit a li hinged to the box having a depending flange taking over the top of the box and said opening in the front wall of the box, limit means in the flexible wall and cooperating means on the flange of the lid, whereby said lid under normal conditions will be limited to control the opening in the front wall and when said means are disengaged will uncover the top of the box.

10. A dispensing box having a dispensing opening in its front-wall, in combination with a lid covering the top of the box and the dispensing opening, a hinge to connect the lid to the rear wall of the box and means to limit the movement of the lid to control the dispensing opening, said box and lid curved to substantially conform to'the curvature of the body of the user.

1 1. A dispensing box having a filling opening in its topand a dis ensing opening in one of its Walls, in combination with a closure hinged to the top, movable in one direction to open both of said openings and movable in an opposite direction to close both of said 0 enings and when desired to open and c ose the dispensing opening only, by a smaller movement of the closure on its hinge.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
