UNITE STATES PATE OFFE.
HENRY C. TRAUTE, OF MONMOUTH BEACH, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE DIAMOND MATCH COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
aren cAsn.
Application filed April 30, 1925. Serial No..26,846.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. TnAU'rE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Monmouth Beach, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to cases for match packets and particularly the type of case wherein the main body is provided with a hinged lid spaced from one end of the body -to provide a transverse opening through which-the ignition composition of the confined match packet is exposed.
The object of my invention is to provide a case of the type referred to with a" supplemental lid adapted to cover the said opening and protect the ignition composition of the contained packet from exposureto dampness, etc., which supplemental lid is mounted and arranged in a simple and effective manner in relation to the main lid so that the latter, while it is being closed after the removal Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the main.
lid closed and the supplemental lid as opened thereby to expose the ignition surface of the packet. 4
Fig. 4 is a section, enlarged, of the lower .end of the packet, showing the supplemental lid and the adjacent hinged portion of the main lid.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section, on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. 1
Referring to the drawings, 6 designates the shallow body portion of the case, which portion is usually tapering'in. form to accommodate a match packet includingsuperposed rows of matches 7 having at their rear ends a connecting portion provided'with an exterior coating 8 of repared i tion composition. -A lid 9 is l fingedto ti e body 6511;.
a suitable distance above the lower or narrow end of the latter by means ofa crosspin 10 supported in the side walls of the body, which pin passes through rolled or tubular portions 11 formed on the lower edge of the lid. This lid is adapted partially to close the open side of the body 6 and confine the contained match packet, except the striking surface 8 of the latter. The ends of the body comprise curved walls 12, 13, respectively, which are bent up from the bottom, and the free end of the lid is curved to present a flange 14 adapted to overlap and closely hug the larger end wall 12 when the lid is closed. The wall 12 and flange 14 have an interlocking teat and a depression 15, 16, respectively,.and the flange is also.
provided with a projection 17 to facilitate the opening ofthe lid;
According to my invention a supplemental lid 18 of novelconstruetion and operation is hinged to the body 6 coaxially with the main lid, in a manner to cover the adjacent open portion of the body and thup enclose and protect the ignition surface 8 of the confined match packet. extended rolled or tubular portion 19 which is fitted between the tubular portions 11 of The lid is provided with an" the main lid and in close relation to the adjacent edge 20 of the latter. The tubular portion 19 receives the cross-pin'lO upon which the main lid is hingedly mounted,
the supplemental lid 18 is curved to providev a flange 21 which overlaps the narrow end wall 13 of the case, and which flange is provided with one or more resilient lips 22 adapted to grasp the wall 13 when the lid 18 is closed and thus tend to hold such lid. in closed position.
The tubular portion 19 of the lid 18 is slightly expanded to present an .eccentric bearing surface 23 adjacent the body of the supplemental lid, so that when the main lid is swung open as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, its edge portion 20 bears upon the surface 23 and becomes wedged thereon sotightly that when the 'main lid is being swung back to closing position (after, say,the removal of.
a match) the supplemental lid is forcibly pulled from the narrow end of the case and raised to the opem osition illustrated in Fig. 3, and by the. otted lines inFig. 4.
forciblyclosed in opposition to the wedge connection and in looking relation to the.
narrow end of the case,' and this without liability of releasing the look of the main lid.
v I claim- A match case of the type described comprising a body portion and two independent lids therefor having oo-axial hinge ortions between the ends ofthe body portion, the free ends of said lids having fastening forcibly engages and binds when the latter is swung open, so that when the secondnamed lid is being closed it forcibly swings open the other lid.
Signed at .New'
York, in the County and Stziteof New York this 28th day of April HENRY -o. TRAUTE.
