My invention relates to closures for cans, packages or the like which are adapted to contain powdered substances. More particularly it relates to such closures having a plurality of sifter openings and a large opening for pouring, with means for selectively opening either of the two.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel closure having a single slide member for opening and closing either sifter or pouring openings.
Another object is to provide such a closure which is of very simple construction, which may be easily assembled, in which the handle u or engaging means on the slide is positioned to be readily accessible at all times, and in which the slide is held and guided by means formed from the main closure wall.
@ther objects and advantages will become apparent from the following descriptionand from the accompanying drawings in which:
"Figure 1 is a plan view showing the top of a can embodying the preferred form of the invention. y
ig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
vFig. is a fragmentary sectional view showing an alternative construction.
The exemplary embodiment chosenfor disclosure herein is shown as applied to a can 5 and comprising generally a main closure wall 6 and a slide member 7 mounted thereon. The wall 6 is preferably attached permanently to the upper edges of the can 5 by means of a seam 8 or other suitable crimping of the two parts.
The slide member 7 is preferably associated with the wall 6 in such a manner that it may be moved in either of two directions selectively to open either a pouring opening or sifter openings. For the purpose of associating the slide member 7 with the wall 6 a pair of spaced parallel slits 10 are formed in the wall 6, and the metal between the slits is odset downwardly from the plane of the wall.
For a purpose which will hereafter appear an aperture 1l is formed in the struck down port-ion of the wall 6 in such a position as to leave two strips 12 of substantial width, one
7 lies above the two ledges 13 and the two l strips 12 while the end portions thereof pass through the slits 10 and lie below the wall 6.
ln order that the slide 7 may be easily engaged for movement, a finger-piece 14 is provided which, in the form illustrated in Figs. Il 2 and 3, comprises a riby in the form of a transverse fold of metal formed from the body of the slide 7 centrally thereof and extending upwardly therefrom. ln this form it is desirable to have all of the openings closed when the nger-piece 14 is positioned midway between the slits 10. To this end a pouring opening 15 and a plurality of sifter openings 16 are formed in the slide 7 so that when the finger-piece 14 is centrally positioned the pouring opening 15 will lie above one of the strips 12 and be closed thereby while the sifter openings 16' will lie above the other of the strips 12 and will be closed thereby. ln the alternative form illustrated in Fig. 4: a different form of finger-piece is employed which is formed from thel metal which is removed from the slide 7 to form the pouring aperture 15. This is donekby severing the metal only on the two sides of theaperture 15 and the end nearest the end of the slide, thus leaving a strip of metal which may be formed into a roll or curl 20 which extends upwardly from the slide 7. The use of this form 'of fnge'r-piece necessitates only a slight wall.
change in the proportioning of the elements and results in an added economy since it uses metal which would otherwise be wasted.
To open either the pouring opening 15 or I the sifter holes 16vthe slide 7 `1s moved by means of the finger-piece 14 until the desired openin lies over the aperture 11 in the wall 6 and t e other opening lies below the wall 6 and is closed thereby. v In constructing the preferred embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, so that the` slide 7 may be easily placed in its operative sition, its length is preferably made slightl)0 less than twice the distance between the s its 10 thus makin it possible to insert the slide without ben 'ng. When so proportioned, stops 17 are provided ,which extend downward from the wall 6 into the path of the sli'de7 so that the slide i's stop d when the holes therein are in position a aperture 11 in the wall 6.
Thealternative embodiment shown in Fig. 4, isalso proportioned so the parts ma be easily assembled and so that the walls o the ve the can serve to perform the function of the stops 17 shown in the preferred form.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that in the closure provided a single slide member serves to provide sifter and pouring openings and that this slide is held in f place b means ormed from the main closure t will also be apparent that the arrangement and proportioning of parts herein shown4 provides a c osure which 1s easily as-j sembled and which is readily operable due to the accessibility of the finger-piece.
I claim as my invention:
1. A receptacle closure comprising a wal having two parallel slits formed therein and the metal between said slits oiset downward- 1y from the plane of said Wall, said wall havl ing a single discharge opening formed in said offset portion, and a, slide member having its opposite ends passing through said slits and aving pouring and sifter openings formed in spaced relation therein so as to be movable selectively into registry with said discharge opening.
2. A receptacle closure comprising a wall having two parallel slits formed therein and a 'discharge opening formed between said slits, a slide member having its opposite ends extending through said slits and having pouring and sifter openings formed in spaced relation therein adapted to be selectlvely brought into .registry with said discharge opening by moving said slide in p opposite directions, said slide having a transverse upwardly extending finger-piece formed thereon near its center to provide for moving said slide.
