Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE HENRY MIL- LEN and FRANK LEsLrE VAN DUSEN, both of the city of Hull, in the county of Ottawa, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Reinforcing Means for Packages, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in metallic reinforcing means for packages, and the objects of our invention are to provide simple but efiicient means for reinforcing a package of paper, millboard, strawboard, or similar material, in such a manner that the corners will be thoroughly protected and the completed package will exceed in strength, the ordinary wooden boxes, which would be much heavier and costly in construction; and it consists essentially of a plurality of removable corner protectors united by connecting wires at the top and bottom, as hereinafter more fully set forth and described in the accompanying specifications and drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package equipped with our improved reinforcing means. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the corner protectors. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an alternative form of corner protector.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the package, the four corners of which are provided with metallic protectors a, b, c and d,
which extend along both sides and the top, of each corner and are united along the top and bottom of the package by diagonally extending wires 6, f, g and h. The form of these corner protectors may be varied as illustrated, but the preferred form illustrated in Fig. 2, consists of a continuous wire memher a, formed with vertically extending sides j and inwardly turned end portions 70, adapted to abut the top and bottom of the package respectively. These end portions are bent into substantially L-shape, whereby the diagonally extending wires may be readily held in central position thereon. To protect the corners, a member I of sheet metal is provided, connected to each of the sides j and bent to conform to the shape of the corners.
The diagonally extending wires 6, f, g and h, in place of extending from one corner to the other, are, preferably as shown, made '3, is the same as that shown in Fig. 2, with the exception that the sheet metal member Z is omitted.
It will thus be seen that we have devised a simple form of reinforcing means for packages, which may be easily applied to the exterior of the same and which may be manufactured at an exceedingly low cost.
While the invention has been described herein with great particularity of detail, yet, it will be readily understood that in carrying out the construction of the same, changes, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What we claim as our invention is The combination with a folding package having diagonally-extending exposed edges on the upper surface thereof, of a metallic reinforcing means including wire corner protectors, and V-shaped connecting wires on the top and bottom extending along the exposed edges of the package and having their apices united, the said V -shaped wires having hooks formed on their extremities which have pivotal engagement with the corner protectors, whereby the said V-Shaped wires may be swung clear of the top of the package on their pivoted extremities.
