BOX.
Application filed March 4, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Serial No. 419,070.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER J. PATON, citizen of the United States, residing at Galva, in the county of McPherson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is an improved box which is desi ned articularly for shipping purposes an the like, which is solid 1n structure, and which is adapted to be knocked down when not in use, so as to be compact in form.
With this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the inventlon consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and also to acquirea knowledge of the details of construction and the means for eflecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of my improved box; Fi 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fi 1; ig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sides and ends of the box detached.
Corresponding and like arts are referred to in the following descriptlon and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
My improved box embodies two sides 1 and two ends 2 which are formed at their meeting edges with erpendicularly disposed corner portlons 3, t e corner portions of the ends 2 overlapping the sides 1, and the cor ner portions of the sides bearing a ainst the inner faces of the ends. The si es 1 are formed at their lower edges with laterally and inwardly disposed flanges 4, the extremities of which extend outwardly beyond the ends 2 and are bent u wardly against the outer faces thereof, as s own, said sides bein formed at their upper edges with out standing rims 5 that form abutments for the overlapping corner portions 3 of the ends 2, to prevent the latter from being sli ped upwardly out of engagement with the sides. The ends 2 are formed at their upper edges with flaps 6 that are returned inwardly upon such ends and embrace the corner portions 3 of the sides, to hold the latter securely to the ends and form a solid structure. The bottom 7 of this box rests upon the inwardly dis osed flanges 4 of the sides 1, as shown.
X top 8 is employed to close the box, and has its side edges returned inwardly, as indicated at 9, and adapted for engagenent with the outstanding rims 5 of the-sides to slidingly connect the top to the box, said top being preferably provided at one end with a depending li 10 which is adapted to abut against the a j acent end 2 of the box and form a stop to limit the sliding move ment of the to In the practlcal use of this improved box, When it is desired to knock down the latter, the to and bottom of the box are removed, and tie outstanding rims 5 of the sides are bent to lie in the same plane with the latter, the ends being then slipped out of engagement with the sides to separate the box into its various parts. When the parts of the box are separated, they are preferably bent flat, so as to be compact in form.
From the above description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I ave provided a simple, durable and efficient construction of box which may be formed of pa ier-mach, fiber or other suitable materia and the parts of which may be securely fastened together without the use of nails or other similar fastening means.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A box comprising sides and ends having angularly disposed corner portions, the corner portions of the ends overlapping the sides, and the corner portions of the sides bearing against the inner faces of the ends, the sides being formed at their lower edges with inwardly disposed flanges, the extremities of which extend outwardly beyond the ends and are bent upwardly against the latter, said sides being also formed at their upper edges with outstanding rims, the ends being formed at their upper edges with flaps returned inwardly and embracing the corner portions of the sides, and abottom supported y the flanges of the sides.
2. A box comprising sides and ends having angularly dis osed corner portions, the corner portions of the ends overlapping the sides, and the corner portions of the sides bearin a ainst the mner faces of the ends, the si es ein formed at their lower edges with inwardly isposed flanges, the extremities of which extend outwardly beyond the ends inont with the outstanding rims, and with 16 and are bent upwardly against the latter, a depending lip adapted to limit the sliding said sides being also formed at their upper movement of the top.
edges with outstanding rims, the ends being In testimony whereof I ailix my signature formed at their upper edges with flaps rein presence of two witnesses.

the flanges of the sides, and a top formed with WM. MOOARTY,
