UNITED STATE@ PATENT FFICE.
HENRY L. BEVERIDGE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
BOX-BOARD.
Application filed March 26, 1998.
To all ywhom 'it ymay concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY L. Enviamos-n, of Indianapolis, county of iilarion, and State ol' Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Box-Ecard g and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acconuyanying drawings, in which lilre numerals refer to like parts.
'lhe object of this inventioii is to provide an imprfrfed box board, or board made of paper for use in the manufacture of paper boxes.
rFlic chief feature of this invention consists in a box board formed of a plurality of layers of paper board with reinforcing strips secured between said layers. I'lerctofore, reinforcing strips have been secured on the inside or the outside of paper boxes at the corners thereof for rf-iiuforcing the same. In such case it is troublesome and expensive to add the reinforcing strips to the boxes after they are made and there is left a roughened or an gular surface on the box along each edge of the reinforcing strips. lilith the box board herein set forth the material is all ready for making the box without the subsequent addition of the reii'iforcing strips7 as said strips are already in the box board. After the box is formed the surface of the boxes, both on the inside and the outside, is smooth.
rlhe full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims. i
In the drawings Figure i is a plan view of the sheet of box board with the reinforcing strips indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a transferse section of the box board on an enlarged scale to show the formation thereof, the same boing centrally broken away. Y F a transverse section of the box board after the saine has been bout7 the board being centrally broken away.
In the formation of the box board herein shown three layers 10, 11 and 1B are united by any suitable uniting` material, as is well known to manufacturers of box board. The invention need not be limited to board made of three layers, as it may be applied to one having two or more layers.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1909.
Serial No. 423,393.
In the formation of the board longitudinally extending reinforcing strips 15 are inserted between two layers thereof and secured to the adjacent layers by adhesive material in the same manner and at the same time as the other layers are secured together. These reinforcing strips are located at predetermined points where it is intended to l score or bend the box board to form the box.
In the case of the board herein shown it is bent longitudinally along a score line substantially central of the reinforcing strips 15 and then in forming the box said board is bent at three points to form sides, bottom and top thereof. That is, the portion of the board between the reinforcing strips forms the sides, bottom and top, while the portion outside of said reinforcing strips may form the ends. At any rate, the reinforcing strips are so located between the layers that when the board is folded into a box, the reinforcing strips will overlap the corners; In that herein shown and described, the two reinforcing strips overlap the eight corners of the box that is to be formed. This strengthens and reinforces said corners and yet leaves a box with smooth interior and exterior surfaces and the manufacturer of the boxes is relieved from the expense and trouble of adding reinforcing strips. 'If his renders said box board of great importance in the manufacture of boxes, especially in largo quantities.
IWhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A box board formed of a plurality of layers united together, and reinforcing strips at intervals secured within said layers.
2. A box board formed of a 'plurality of rectangular layers united together, and a reinforcing strip secured Within said layers near cach lateral edge of said board where said board will be bent in forming the box.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
HENRY L. BEVERIDGE.
