UNITED 1 STATES PATENT OFFICE,

rosaisea.
N Be it known that I, Bonner P.,BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented Improvements in Suit-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes erected from suitably scored paper board blanks and my leading object is to provide by means of a one piece blank a box having animproved construction effecting the desired distribution of material. for securing reinforcement where needed without waste, permitting the erection to be effected easily, and providing for the interlocking of the erected parts in such manner as to secure stability.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a blank cut and scored in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the same with outer elements of the sides and side extensions folded in upon the inner elements, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a box in process of erection.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the blank comprises a rectangular central portion 1 form ing the bottom of the box, rectangular side sections 2 hinged on the scores or scoredilines 3 dividing them from the part 1 rectangular side sections 1 hinged on the scores or scored lines 5 dividing them from the sections 2, rectangular extensions 6 hinged on the scores or scored lines 7 dividing them from the sections 4;, rectangular end sections 8 hinged on the scores or scored lines 9 dividing them.
from the part 1, rectangular end' sectionslO hinged on the scores or scored lines 11 dividing them from the sections 8, and rectangular extensions 12 hinged on the lines 13 dividing them from the sections 11). The side sections 2 and 4 have the end extensions 2' and 4: divided from the end sections 8 and 10 by, the through cuts 3' in line with the scores 3, from each other by the scores 5 in linewith the scores 5; and from the side sections by the scores 9. in line with the scores.
9. The sections 6 are cut back from the ends of thesections 4; by the width of thesections 12 and the latter have the extensions 12 "hinged on the score 1ines3" which are inline Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J an, 13, 1914.
Application filed September 23, 1911. Serial No. 650,872.
As shown in Fig. 3, the box is formed by sions comprising the parts 2 and 4, then erecting the end sections 8 and folding the end sections 10 over the side extensions so that these parts shall be at right angles to the bottom and the sides. The foot sections 12 will now lie upon the bottom and the ends thereof will drop behind or can be engaged, by a slight pressure, behind the ends of the sections 6, when the parts 12 will extend upwardly from the parts 12 and against the parts 1 to more securely interlock the parts in the erected position by preventing the parts 6 from slipping over the parts 12, as also to effect a frictional or wedging engagement of the faces of the parts 12' with the side sections 4 for the purpose of more effectively retaining the parts in place.
Vhile I have used the terms side and end in-the description and claims for convenience of description, it will be understood that they are equivalent terms as the box may be considered to have four sides or four ends. Th1s structure, which is conveniently inade and erected, has its elements so arranged as to provide the desired superior strength in the sides and ends without requiring the use of heavy stock, whereby a substantial saving of material is obtained.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. A box comprising a rectangular base, side sections hinged to said base, side sections hinged to and lying within said first named side sections, extensions hinged to and disposed at right angles to side sections aforesaid, end sections hinged to said base, end sections hinged to and lying Within said first namedend sections, said extensions being disposed between complementary end sections, and extensions hinged to said second named end sections, said last named extensions forming lap joints with and bearing against the faces of said second named side sections, whereby said last named sections are held against the complementary side se'ct-ions'and the extensions hinged to said second named side sections are held against said base.
, 2. A box comprising a rectangular base, side sections hinged to said base, side sections hinged to and lying against said first named side sections, extensions hinged to 'and disposed at right angles to side sections aforesald, end sectlons hinged to said base,
I end sections hinged to and lying against said first named-end sections, said extensions being disposed between complementary end sections, foot pieces hinged to said second named end sectionsand lying against said base, and extensions hinged to saidfoot pieces and overlapping said second named side sections, whereby said last named sec"- tions .are held against said first named side sections and said foot pieces-are'held against said base.
3. A box having a rectangular base,'side sections hinged thereto, side sections hinged to' and lying against aforesaid side sections,
end extensions hinged to said side sections, foot pieces hinged to said second slde sections and lying against said base, sald foot pieces being cut back from the ends of said base, end sections hinged to said base, end sections hinged to and lying against end sections aforesaid, said end extensions lying between complementary end sections, foot pieces hinged to said second end sections and lying, against said base in engagement with the ends of said first'foot pieces, and extensions hinged to said second foot pieces and lying against said second side sections.
4. A knock down box having a rectangular base, side sections hinged thereto, side sectibpshinged to and lying against aforesaid side sections, end extensions hinged'to each of said side sections, foot pieces hinged to said second named side sections and lying against saidbase, said foot pieces being cut back fromthe ends of said base, end sect-ions hinged to said base, end sections'hingedto In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name this 22nd day of September, 1911, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
