BERRY-BOX.
Specification of Letters fatent.
Application led August 8, 1913. Serial No. 783,810.
To all who/m, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN V. ROSE, a citi'- zen of the United States, residing at Dodge City, in the county of Ford and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful lmprovernents in Berry-Boxes, of which the following is a. specification.
,The invention relates to' knock-down or foldable boxes, and more particularly to the class of foldable-berry boxes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character wherein the same when 1set up will be prevented frorn collapsing or folding so that the said box will retain its contents, the box being constructed in a novel manner for the fastening of its overlapped ends and bottom.
Another object of the invention is the pro-` vision of a box of this character wherein the contents thereof when it is filled will have to be removed before the said box can bel knocked down or folded.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly etlicient and durable in use, capable of being manufactured with the least possible waste of stock, and which when set up the parts thereof will mutually brace each other to prevent the collapsing or yielding of the same under ordinary use.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character vwhich can be manufactured at a minimum expense.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingv drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective A and 9, which are formed 1n one piece with bends, folds or crease lines 10 at their intersections, forming the corners of the box. The walls 5 and 9 respectively are provided with slots 11 which extend in reverse directions to each other so that the said walls can be united and fastened together when brought ,into overlapping relation to each other so as to prevent the body of the box from becoming accidentally separated. Joined to the wall 9 at one edge thereof is a strip forming at its outer end a bottom 12, and between the latter and the said wall 9 is av foldable intermediate portion 13, while formed on the sections-6, T and 8 are flaps 14 which are adapted to be folded upwardly and inwardly on bends, folds or crease lines 15 so as to support the bottom 12 when inserted within the body between the walls thereof.v The bottom 12 is foldable on a bend, fold or crease line 16, while the intermediate foldable section is provided with a bend, fold or crease line 17 so that the said portion 13 can be folded aboutthe overlapped walls 5 and 9 when joined to each other so as to position the bott-om 12 within the body whereby it will rest upon the flaps 14 spaced above the lowermost edges of the walls of the body. The overlapped walls 5 and 9 when connected together lie between the folded stretches of the intermediate portion 13, thereby concealing the connection therebetween. The strip forming the bot tom 12 and the intermediate portion 13 is disposed at right angles from the strip forming the walls of the body of the box and is integral therewith.
The blank from which the box is made is constructed from any suitable material suchl as pasteboard, veneer, or any other stock. adapted for the purpose, and by preference will have its surfaces covered with paraflin so as to render the material water-proof.
It will be vapparent that when the box is set up it will be impossible for the accidental collapsing thereof, andalso said box cannot be collapsed or knocked down until the contents thereof has been removed. By reason of the interposition of the walls 5 and 9 when fastened together between the folded stretches of the intermediate portion 13 it will be impossible for the separation of the said walls, thereby obviating the accidental collapsing of the box.
Formed in the section 7 is a semi-circular shaped slit 18 providing a locking wing 19 which is adapted to be bent at right angles Patented Sept. 1, 1914. n
gular shaped body formed from a single blank bent on itself to provide the Walls thereof, the ends of the blank being detachably interlocked with each other, an extension on one end of the blank at its lower edge and bent upwardly and inwardly over the upper edge of the blank against the outer and inner faces of the detaehably interloeked ends of the same, the said eXtension being further bent to form a swin ing bottom, inwardly and upwardly bent aps at the lower edge of the blank forming a bearing for the bottom, and a tongue' cut from one wall of the body and arranged in the path of the free edge of the bottom to prevent the swinging thereof away from the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
