S. G. GARY. BOX STRAP.
,No.. 450,753. Patented Apr. 21, 1891.
' with tongues, one or more, at or near the strap UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SPENCER O. CARY, OF BALDXVIN, NEIV YORK.
B O X S T RA P.
SPECIFICATION forming" part of Letters Patent No. 450,753, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed October 29, 1890. Serial No.369,643. (No model.)
To all whom it 12mg concern.-
Be it known that I, SPENCER G. CARY, of Baldwin, county of Queens, State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Box-Straps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to a metal strap adapted to be bent upon and about the corner of a boX and seated thereon, or to be seated and secured flatwise upon the adjacent corners or faces of two boxes placed one upon the other; and my invention consists in a box-strap composed of a metal strip or plate of suitable length, the edges of the opposite ends of which are curved in outline and having a corrugation at or upon and along its side edges and said curved end edges and provided ends and within the line of the said edge corrugations out from the strap-body and bent at an angle to the face of the strap which is opposite to the corrugated face thereof, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a plan of a metal box-strap containing my invention; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line a: 00, Fig. 1, and showing the strap bent upon itself to fit to and around a box corner.
A is a metal plate or strip of suitable length and width, as shown. The end edges a of the strip or plate are curved in outline, as shown.
At a is shown a corrugation formed in the strip or plate at, upon, and continuously along the side edges and end edges thereof and throughout its length corresponding'in direction to the outline of said edges, as shown.
At a are tongues near the ends of the strip or plate and which may be one or more in number at each said end, said tongues being struck or cut from the body of the strip or plate within the line of the edge corrugation, as shown, and bent at an angle to the face of the strip or plate which is opposite to the corrugated face thereof. The strap thus constructed may be bent upon itself, as shown in Fig. 2, to be seated on and fit to abort corner, when the tongues a will serve to fasten the strap to its place, the curved end edges a will present an edge continuous from the side edges without angles or projections, which, when present, are liable to catch against adjacent objects, and the continuous corrugation a at, upon, and along the side and end edges will operate to force and hold said edges snugly to the box surface.
I am aware that box-straps have been heretofore formed with tongues cut from the strapbody and bent at an angle to the face thereof, and hence I make no claim thereto, broadly, herein. I am also aware that boxstraps have been formed with their end edges curved in outline, and thereforeI make no claim to such form of the said edges, broadly, herein; and I am also aware that box-straps have been corrugated along and upon their side edges and have been given corrugations extending laterally of the strap; but in such latter case the lateral corrugations have not. been at and upon the said end edges.
I believe myself to be the first who has constructcd a metal box-strap with curved end edges, a corrugation at and along and upon the side edges and continuously therefrom at, along, and upon the curved end edges, and with tongues struck or cut from the strapbody at or near the ends thereof and within the line of the edge corrugation and bent at an angle to that face of the strap which is opposite to the corrugated face thereof; and it is therefore to a box-strap in which these elements are in combination that I make and define my claim herein.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a box-strap composed of a metal plate or strip, the end edges of which are curved in outline and having a corrugation which is continuous at, along, and upon the side edges, and said end edges and tongues at or near the strap ends cut from the strap-body within the line of said edge corrugation and bent at an angle to the face of the strap which is opposite to the corrugated face thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
