SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,604, dated February 15, 1887. Application filed December '7, 1885. Serial No. 185,024. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN W. JONES, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Gloth-BoardsandTags Therefor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in cloth-boards and means for attaching and detaching a tag thereto; and it consists in the various combinations of parts,hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.

My invention is an improvement in clothboards, for which invention Letters Patent were granted to me on April 28, 1885, No. 316,628, to which reference is made.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved cloth-board. Fig. 2 is a view of the same, showing the tag extended. Fig. 3 is an end view of the board. Fig. 4 is a side view of a portion of the elastic fastener. Fig. 5 is a view of a different form of fastening.

In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In the drawings, Arepresents rnyimproved cloth-board, which is preferably constructed of three layers of wood, with the grain of each of the layers running in a different direction from that of the layer or layers with which it is immediately connected. The three layers, when prepared as hereinafter described, are preferably held in rigid contact with each other by glue or any other adhesive material suitable for this purpose. It is quite obvious that three or more layers of wood of the required thickness may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. Section at of the cloth-board is provided, of the required size and thickness, and section a (being the middle layer) is recessed for the reception of the tag, elastic connection, and fastening hereinafter described. The recess for-the fastening may be circular, semicircular, diamond, or any other suitable shape for receiving and retaining the fastening in fixed relation to the board, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.

or represents the third layer of the board, which is provided with opening for allowing the fastening to be attached or detached, and is provided with extension-slot f, as indicated in Fig. 1, into which the fastening c, with projecting shoulders e 6, may be inserted, and so that the shoulders shall bear against the projections of recess 12, whereby the tag and the elastic connection may be held in fixed relation to the board and the same may be removed or released therefrom. The introduction of the fastener is accomplished by inserting tagfastening e in the slotted recess in the middle section of the board and turning the shoulders sidewise by operating the same through opening fin the upper layer of the board, in which position the shank on fastening e is carried into the extensionslotf, and turned so that shoulders e e of the fastening shall rest upon projections f f 2 in the middle section of the board. The tag may be detached by a reverse operation.

-1t is quite obvious that the form of aperture b in the center layer of the board for receiving and retaining the tag-fastening may be diamond shape, asin Fig. 2, or any other shape, providing projections f f in the middlelayer are provided for. receiving and engaging projections e e on the fastening. In case the same is diamond shape, the recess in layer a of the cloth-board should slightly cover the upper end of the fastening, as shown in Fig. 2, for retaining the same in position.

I provide a suitable tag, d, the end of which projects slightly beyond the cloth-board to facilitate extending the tag. This tag fits and works in recess 1), formed in the middle layer of the board, and it is attached to an elastic connection, d, which in turn is attached to or provided with the fastening e, which fits in the recess formed in the middle section of the board, whereby the tag and elastic connection are attached to and held in the recess, from which the tag may be drawn and exposed when the same is in use.

For preventing the board from crackingand to provide a better finish, I stain and varnish the exposed ends of the board, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the three layers of Wood glued together, as described, and having the middle section reeessedgvith the tag, clastic connection, and fastening held in the re eess, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the elothboard formed of three or more layers glued together and having the middle section recessed, and formed with projections in the recess, of the outer layer slotted, as described, the tag, elastic connection, and fastening held in the re cess, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the cloth-board constructed of three or morelayers of wood glued together and having the recess in the middle section of the board and a slot in the upper section, with the tag, elastic connection, and fastening having proiecting shoulders for engaging projections in the recess, substantially as set forth, for the purposes stated.

4.. The combination of three or more layers of wood glued together-and having the middle section recessedmith the tag, the elastic eonneetion, and means for securingthe elastieconnection in the recess, substantially as set forth.
