` Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed May 29, 1905. Serial No. 262,867.
To fir/ZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED SwANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and Territory of New I/Iexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie- Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the saine.
My invention relates to improvements in necktie-iasteners; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object oi the invention is to produce an improved device of this character which is adapted to hold a necktie in place and which will enable the necktie to be readily donned and taken oli.
In the accompanying drawings, `Figure 1 is a rear elevation oi a necktie provided with an improved fastening device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the plate. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the saine. Fig. 4 .is a detail perspective view of the button used in connection with the plate. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the same, and Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to that oi' Fig. 5.
To the rear side oi a necktie, which may be of the form here shown or oi' any other suitable form, is secured a platel. The said plate is here shown as provided at its upper corners with ears 2, by means oi' which .it may be readily sewed to the tie, and it is also provided near its lower edge with a longitudinal slot 3, through which a foldv of the tic maybe passed. In the upper central portion of the plate is an inclined opening 5, the upper portion oi which is widened, as at 6, and from thence contracted upwardly, as at 7. The said plate 1 .is bent longitudinally, so that its upper and lower portions lie at an angle each with respect to the other, and thereby the said plate is hollowed on one side. The concave or hollowed side oi the said plate is opposite the tie and serves to inclose the head oi' the button hereinafter described to pre vent the button-head from pressing the tie outwardly, the said bent plate allowing the' tie to lie straight and to be kept smooth over the head of the button.
In connection with the plate I provide a button 8. Said button comprises a 'fiat stem Q, 'Formed at opposite ends with a head 1.0, a
yoke-head 11, and a base-cap 12, which oomprises an outer plate 13 and an inner plate 14. The said plates are substantially rectangular in form, the outer plate 13 having one end reversely turned, as at 15, and having a corrugation 16 4formed transversely in its center and the plate 14 being substantially ilat and having at one end a reverselyturned iiange portion 17, the said plate 14 being further provided with a slot 18, which opens through the inner end ol' said plate. The yoke-head 11 is inserted in the corrugation 16, and the plate is placed on the rear side oi the plate 14, the reversely-bent portions 16 1'7 of said plates serving to secure them together and the slot 18 serving to clear the shank oi the button. Hence the buttonshank is pivotally connected to the cap 12, so that it may be turned at any required angle with reference thereto. The head 1() of the button is passed through the buttonhole of the collar-band from the inner side to cause the cap 12 to bear against the inner side oi the collar-band, and the head 10 isinserted .in and passed through the opening 5 in. the plate 1. It will be understood that, owing to the inclined position oi the said opening 5, the tie, to which the late is attached must be iirst inclined, and a'l'ter the head has been passed through the said opening its ends engage the inner side of the said plate on opposite sides of the said opening when the tie assumes its required vertical position. When the tie is in the required position, the overhanging upper portion oi the plate will lie on the head 10 of the button and. the ends oi the latter will project beyond opposite sides oi theopening 5, so that the tie will be retained in such position. The parts of the button may be readily separated and assembled, and this construction of the button renders the same exceedingly cheap, strong, simple, and durable. The plate and the parts of the button may be made oi any Suitable material, such as sheet metal or celluloid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a plate for attachment to the inner side oi a necktie, bent longitudinally, with its luiper and lower portions at an angle with respect to each other, and further provided in the 'Lipper central portion with an inclined opening, a button having a flat stern provided at its outer end with a ilat head ior insertion through the opening in the y IOO IlO
plate and to lie under the overhanging upper portion thereof, said button having a cap at the inner end of its stern.
2. In combination with a plate for attachment to the inner side of a necktie7 bent longitudinally, with its upper and lower ortions at an angle with respect to each ot er, and further provided in the upper central portion with an inclined opening, a button havin a flat stem provided at its outer end with a` at head for insertion through the opening in the plate to lie under the overhanging upper portion thereof, said button having a yoke-head at the inner end of its stem, and a cap in said yoke-head comprising anouter and an inner my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
