H. H. HOLMES'.
BROOM HOLDER'.
APPLICATION FILED MAY-1.1918.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
HENRY H. HOLMES, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CARL F. NELSON AND ONE-THIRD TO ERNST V. GUSTAFSON, BOTH 0F COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
BRooivr-HOLDER.
Application mea May 1, 191s. serial No. 231,908.
To all whom t may concern:
i Be it lmownl that I,`HENRY H. HoLMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the ,county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. s
This invention relates to an `improved broom holder, and has for its primary object to provide a very simply constructed device for the purpose of securely holding a broom or like article upon a wall suspended above the floor, and which is so constructed that the broom can be very easily and quickly removed from the holder.
It is another object of the invention to provide a holding device for the above purpose which can be manufactured at very small cost and can be distributed gratis by the manufacturer as an advertisement.
And it is a further object of the invention to provide a holder for brooms which is eX- ceedingly durable, not liable to get out o-f order, and is highly efficient and reliable for the purpose in view.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved broom holder applied to a wall and a broom held therein; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view illustrating in dotted lines the manner in which the broom is released from the holder.
Referringin detail to the drawing, 5 designates the body bar which has a fiat longitudinally extending face 1 for engagement against the surface of a wall, the opposite side face of said bar being inclined from the center of the bar to the ends thereof as shown at 6, said inclined surfaces leading` to va central semi-circular notch or recess 7 in the edge of the bar. Transverse openings are formed through the ends of the bar 5 to receive suitable attaching screws 8 whereby the bar may be securely fastened to the wall.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. s, 1919.
A strip of thick rubber or other elastic material indicated at 9 is securely fixed at its ends by means of nails or analogous fastening elements 10 to the inclined faces of the barl 5. This elastic strip is preferably of substantially the same width as the width of the bar and the medial portion thereof extends across the open side of the central recess 7 in the bar. To this medial portion of Vthe elastic strip 9, an inelastic tape or ribbon l1 is secured, preferably by engaging the medial portion of the tape around the elastic strip and stitching the opposed parts together closely adjacent to saidstrip as shown in the drawing. The free ends of the tape 1l are sufficiently long to enable the user to readily grasp the same and pull the elastic strip 9 outwardly away from the face of the bar 5.
The manner of using my improved broom holder will be readily understood from reference to F ig. 2 of the drawing; The bar 5 is securely fastened in a horizontal position upon the face of. the wall, door or other structure and the elastic strip 9 pulled outwardly as above explained away from the recess 7 The cylindrical handle of the broom can then be readily inserted upwardly between the elastic strip and the body bar. When the outward pull on the strip 9 is released it will return to its normal position and frictionally clamp upon the handle of the' broom whereby the latter is securely held in the recess 7 and against the bar 5, and its longitudinal movement through said recess prevented. The broom may be instantly released when it is desired to use the same by simply grasping the ends of the tape 11 and pulling outwardly on the elastic strip 9. By providing this strip of relatively great width, there is an extensive area having frictional clamping engagement against the broom handle so it will be seen that the handle of the broom will not be cut can, of course,l be constructed in various sizes to hold one or more brooms, andthe body bar made in other shapes than that above referred to. As the brooms are. suspended above the floor surface, the shape of the straw or body portion thereof is preserved, and the life of the broom thus materially prolonged. The form and .arrangement of the several other parts of thel broom holder are also susceptible of many minor modifications and it is therefore to be understood that I reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and ,scope of the invention as claimed.
article holder comprising a body bar having an article receiving recess therein, a flat non-metallic elastic element fixed at its ends to the body bar and exending `across the open Side. of said recess to frictionally clamp and retain an article Within the recess, and an inelastic plendant member surrounding 'the' interme ,fate portion of' said elastic element to pull Seid, element outwardly from the recess, in the body bar and thereby release. the article.
In testimony whereof If hereunto @LHX my signature in the Presence of tvv-o Witnesses.
HENRYA HOLMES.
