PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915.
Application filed July 28, 1914. Serial No. 853,686.
To all whom it may] concern Be it known that l, SARKIS SIMONIAN, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at East Cambridge, in the count of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple holder for supporting pens and pencils in the pocket.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a spring-like pen and pencil holder which is adapted to be suitably arranged in the pocket of a coat, vest or other garment so that pens or pencils can be readily engaged therewith in order to support the pens or pencils in the pocket of the owner to prevent the pens or pencils from being lost or falling out of the pocket.
in the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of refer ence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing the same applied, with parts of the pocket broken away to disclose the underlying structure; Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view taken through the device as applied, the spring-like members being shown in full lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view of a modified form of my device; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing the manner of encircling the spring-like gripping members with tubing or cushions.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a plurality of similar opposed spring-like gripping members 10 having their ends rigidly secured in opposed connecting elements 11 provided with longitudinal openings 11, the said spring-like gripping members being each preferably formed of a substantially coiled spring, providing faces or portions 1:2 which will readily grip pens, pencils or other similar members, as will be hereinafter more fully described. A transverse spring-like spacing member 13 in the nature of a coil spring has its ends connected to the medial portions of the spring-like gripping members 10 and lies between the same to hold the spring-like gripping members in spaced relation so that the pen or pencil, indicated by the numeral 14, can be arranged to pass between the gripping members and be supported thereby.
Securing pins 15, each having a threaded shank 16 and a knurled head 17, have their shanks projecting into the openings 11 of the connecting elements 11, suitable washers 15 being provided to seat or properly secure the pins 15. In applying the holder to the pocket the pins 15 are first removed from threaded engagement with the connecting elements and the holder proper is placed within the pocket adjacent its upper edge and at the opening of the pocket. Securing pins are then pressed through the cloth from the exterior to the interior of the pocket and are threaded into the connecting elements 11, thus securing the pencil holder rigidly within the pocket so that a pen or pencil passed between the gripping members will lie within the pocket and have its upper end gripped by the members so as to prevent the pen or pencil from accidentally falling out of the pocket.
It will be particularly noted that by having the spacing member 13 connected to the medial portions of the gripping members 10, it will be possible to secure a pen or pencil of large diameter between those portions of the gripping members to one side of the spacing member, withoutaffecting thoseportions of the gripping members at the other side of the spacing member. Thus a pen or pencil of large diameter can be arranged to lie between the gripping members as mentioned and a pencil of smaller diameter can be arranged to lie between the gripping members adjacent their ends and there they connect with the connecting elements, the spring-like action of the gripping members being adapted to prevent two such articles when engaged by the holder, from falling out of the pocket.
The spacing member 13 can be formed to have its opposed faces or portions indicated by the numeral 18 adapted to grip pens or pencils inserted between the gripping members, said spacing member being preferably circular in cross section, although it may be of any other desired configuration.
In Fig. l I disclose a modified form of my device and in which instance instead of having the securing pins for threaded engagement with the connecting elements 11 I have the securing pins, one of which is indicated by the numeral 19, formed With the connecting element and projecting therefrom 'to pass through the pocket and have the free 'end secured in a suitable head 20, thus securing the device upon the pocket so that it Will present a neat and effective appearance andwill readily accomplish the purpose for Which it is designed.
In order to effect a proper securement of the pen or pencil Which may be carried by the holder, I preferably employ a tubing or cushion 21 made of rubber or the like, and Which encircles the gripping members 10, thus providing a greater frictional contact With the pen or pencil and facilitating the supporting thereof by the holder.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular construction disclosed herein; that various departures may be made from the particular detail construction set forth Without departing from the spirit of the invention and that the scope of the invention is defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A pen and pencil holder comprising'a plurality of similar opposed spring-like tubular gripping members, means connecting the ad jecent ends of said members, and an intermediately arranged transversely extending tubular spacing member, spreading and holding said gripping members apart at their medial portions and having its ends rigidly secured to the medial portions of said gripping members.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
