MARGARET LOUISE NOXON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PIN-CATCH.
Application led .Tune 2, 1913.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MARGARET L. NoxoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pin-Catch, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention has for its object to provlde a hat pin having a pin tongue at one end which is connected with a body or band by an angular spring, an S-shaped fastener being secured to the body or band for holding the other or pointed end of the pin tongue 1n any one of a plurality of distances from the body or band. This construction permits of the use of the hat pin with hats of different types, and with the body or band. disposed at the outer side of the hat, the pin tongue extending through the hat and coiffure of the person wearing the hat and the point of the pin tongue being held by the S-shaped fastener.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the 1nvention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a sectional viewon the line 3 3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a view showing a portion of a coiffure and a hat in section, illustrating how the hat pin is used.
By referring to the drawings it is seen that a curved body or band 5 is provided,
which may be constructed of any desired' size and may be ornamented to incet the wishes of the wearer. Spaced from the end 6 of this curved body or band there is an angular spring member 7, which is secured at 8 to the inner side of the curved body or band, a pin tongue 9 extending from the angular spring 7 at 10. lI prefer to construct this pin tongue 9 and the angular spring 7 of one piece of metal, as shown in the draw` ings. This pin tongue 9, which may be curved as shown in the drawings, has a pointed end 11,which is held in place by the S-shaped fastener 12, which is secured to the curved body or band 5 at 13, and at a distance from the other end 14 of the curved body or band. This fastener 12 is S-shaped, as stated, so that the pointed end 11 of the Specication of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 771,204. v
pin tongue may be disposed between the parts l2a and 12b of the S-shaped passage, or, if desired, the pointed end 11 may be in'- troduced at the other side of the S-shaped fastener 12, and between thek parts 12b and 12c of the Sshaped fastener. When the pointed end 11 of the pin tongue is disposed between the parts 12a and 12b of the S- shaped fastener, the pointed end 11 of the pin tongue is held at a greater distance from the body or band than is the case when the pointed end 11 of the pin tongue is disposed between the parts 12b and 12c of the S- shaped fastener 12. In this way the pointed end 11 of the pin tongue may be held relatively to the curved band 5, at such a distance from the curved band 5 as may be desired. This permits the use of the hat pin tongue with hats of different types, and sizes, and with the curved body or band 5 disposed around the outer side of the hat and with the pin tongue 9 disposed through the hat and the coiffure of the person wearing the hat in a manner readily understood.
The S-shaped fastener 12 is constructed of resilient material and it is provided with projections 15. When the pointed end 11 is pressed inwardly, the parts of the S-shaped fasteners move apart to permit the pointed end 1l of the pin tongue 9 to pass one of the projections 15, this projection serving to hold the pin tongue in position. The angular spring 7 permits the pin tongue at the spring to move to or from the body of the pin tongue t0 accommodate the thickness of the material between the pin tongue and the body 5. In this way the distance of the pin tongue 9 from the body 5 is adjusted not only at the fastener 12 but also at the spring 7.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a pin catch, a body, a pin tongue disposed at the rear of the body, means connecting the pin tongue with one end of the body, and an S-shaped fastener having one of its terminals secured to the rear of the body at the other end and with its central portion and its other terminal spaced from the body, the said other terminal being spaced a greater distance from the body than the said central portion for securing the pin tongue at different distances from the said other end of the body.
2. In a pin catch, a body, a pin tongue, means connecting the pin tongue with the body, and a 'resilient S-shaped fastener secured at one end to the body and extending therefrom for holding the pin tongue at either one of two predetermined positions relatively to the body.
3. In a pin catch, a body, a pin tongue disposed at the rear of the body, means connecting the pin tongue with one end on the body, and a fastener secured to the body and having two members disposed transversely at the rear of the body at its other end and spaced from the body, one a greater distance than the other for securing the pin tongue at different distances from the said other end of the body.
In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARGARET LOUISE NOXON.
