Description

(No Model.)
11. M. SALSBERG. BUSINESS CARD DIRECTORY.
Patented Maj 11, 1897.
HYMEN M. SALSBERG,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUSINESS-CARD DIRECTORY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,591, dated May 11, 1897.
Application filed June 25, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HYME v M. SALSBERG, a citizen of the United States,'residingat New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Business-Card Directories; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in business-card directories; and the objects of my improvement are to provide means for conveniently displaying business-cards, for readily removing the cards from thedireetory, and for quickly and accurately inserting the cards when they have been removed therefrom. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the directory, showing the covers and the two-faced slate leaves with the business-cards clamped thereto. Fig. 2 it a cross-section of the directory on the line w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of a modified form of clamp, and Fig. 4: is a section on line y y of Fig. 3.
The letters A A represent the two backs or lids or outer leaves or covers of my card-directory B B, the slate leaves, one or two or more in number inthe same line or plane, arranged longitudinally with the lids or covers of the directory. These slate leaves are notched upon their edges in one, two, or more places, as shown at O 0 upon the drawings. D D are elastic bands adapted to fit into the said notches in the slate leaves and extend around the slate leaves upon the two faces thereof, in order that the business-cards may be clamped upon the two faces of the leaves on the opposite portions thereof. These slate leaves B B are of sufficient length to hold Serial No. 596,875. (No model.)
about three business-cards on each side thereof of the ordinary size, and to do this only three elastic bands are required, one band for the two cards on the opposite sides of each slate leaf.
In place of the elastic bands D D, secured in the notches C 0 upon the edges of the leaves, I may provide a fiat piece of metal or wire extending through the edges of the slate leaveSand emerging therefrom on opposite sides thereof and bent upon itself on each side of the slate leaf, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, so as to clampa card upon the opposite faces of the leaf about the same point, as shown at K K.
The leaves are made of slate-paper, so that the name of the firm maybe written thereon under the card before the card is inserted under the elastic band or under the metal strip, in order that another card of the same firm may be put in its proper place when the first card has been removed from the directory.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a business-card directory the combination of the outer covers, lids, or backs, A, A, the two-faced slate leaves, two or more in line, inclosed between the said covers, the said slate leaves having notches upon their outer edges, the elastic band secured in said notches, and extending around the slate leaves upon the two faces thereof, adapted to clamp business-cards upon the two slated faces of the leaves, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HY MEN M. SALSBERG.
Witnesses:
