To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS EDGAR SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Name-Leaves for Ledgers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in ledgers, account books and the like having a name record of that class in which one page is devoted to a large number of accounts on which page entries are made at certain periods opposite the names. Very often an account under one name is discontinued, as in the case of gas companies accounts where customers change and the meter of a certain serial number will be used from time to time by different parties. In such cases and in many other cases it is desirable, but has heretofore been impossible, to replace discontinued names by new or succeeding names without disturbing the serial numbers or alphabetical order, and the object of this invention is to provide a name leaf for account books in which the names may be instantly detached and replaced by others thereby elfecting a great saving in labor and book space and in the attainment of this object I have produced a name leaf for account books adapted to be placed adjacent to the account leaf, said name leaf comprising a sheet provided with a plurality of slits arranged in a series of pairs and a series of interchangeable name slips having their ends inserted in said slits, whereby the name slips are detachably and interchangeably attached to the sheet and although normally neatly and securely held in place yet may be quickly and conveniently removed and replaced by others.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of a name leaf for ledgers and the like embodying my invention, said page being partly broken away to save space. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows on said line. Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are sectional views of other name leaves embodying my invention. Fig. 7 is a plane of one of the name slips having tongues provided with looking shoulders. Fig. 8 is a plan of one of the name slips in which thelocking shoulders are omitted from the tongues.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.

In the drawing, Fig. 1 shows in plan a name leaf embodying my invention, the same comprising a sheet 10 and a series'of interchangeable name slips 11 detachably and interchangeably attached to said sheet by providing said sheet with two series of slits 12, 12 and two series of slits 13, 13 arranged in pairs, the members of each pair being arranged adjacent to each other.

The name slips are provided with tongues 14, 14 extending from both ends thereof and these tongues may be provided with lateral shoulders 15, 15 if desired, as shown in Fig.-

7, or these shoulders may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 8. The name slips are preferably placed in vertical alinement with their horizontal edges abutting against one an other, as shown in Fig. 1, the tongues 14 being inserted in the slits 12 and 13. According to the preferred form of my invention, the tongues extend through the slits 12, thence toward each other along the back face of the sheet 10, thence through the slits 13 and finally in the same direction and preferably toward the binding edge 16 of the sheet 10' between the front face of the sheet 10 and the back face of the body portion of the name slip, as shown in Fig. 2. In this manner the name slips are normally securely and neatly attached to the sheet 10 and yet may be quickly and conveniently detached therefrom and replaced by others. In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 2 this is accomplished most readily by first detaching the right hand tongue 14, the free end of which extends toward the left and may be easily withdrawn from the slit 13, from the back face of the sheet 10 and afterward said tongue may be withdrawn upwardly through the slit 12 by grasping the body portion of the name slip. The name slip is then swung upon the left hand tongue as a hinge toward the left, thereby freeing that portion of the tongue which lies between the front face of the sheet 10 and the back face of the body portion of the name slip. The tongue may then be readily withdrawn from the slit 13 and then through the slit 12. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 after the tongues have been passed through both of the slits the free ends thereof are extended toward each other.

Figs. & and 5 show other modifications in which the left hand tongue is passed through three slits while the right hand tongue is passed through only two, in one case the right hand tongue extending toward the left after passing through the second slit and in the other case extending toward the right after passing through the second slit.

Fig. 6 shows another embodiment in which the tongues are first passed through the intermediate slits, then along the back face of the sheet and extend thence through the end slits and the free ends lie upon the front face. All of these various forms come within the spirit and scope of my invention and I do not limit myself to any particular form except where the claims so specify.

In the use of the name leaf the same is placed adjacent to the account leaf upon which are entered the records of debits and credits as well as meter readings or whatever the account may be and as accounts are often discontinued it will be evident that from time to time the name slips may be removed and replaced by others, thereby preserving the alphabetical order or numerical order according to which system is employed. The result is that there is a great saving in time and in book space.

Having thus described my invention,

what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:

1. A name leaf for ledgers and the like having, in combination, a plurality of interchangeable name slips, and a sheet provided with a plurality of slits, each of said slips extending at each end thereof through one of said slits, said ends extending thence toward each other along the back face of said sheet and each end extending thence through another of said slits located between said first two slits, whereby said slips are detachably and interchangeably attached to said sheet.

2. A name leaf for ledgers and the like having, in combination, a plurality of interchangeable name slips, and a sheet provided with a plurality of slits, each of said slits extending at each'end thereof through one of said slits, said ends extending thence toward each other along the back face of said sheet, each end extending thence through another of said slits located between said first two slits, the free ends extending thence in the same direction along the front face of said sheet beneath the body portion of said slip.
