To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JENNINGS Soo'rr Mo- Coiun, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dobbs Ferry, in the county of IVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Posts or Plllars for Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of the same.

This invention relates to loose leaf binders and more particularly to extensible posts or pillars for loose leaf binders.

It further relates to means for quickly securing together the difierent sections of an extensible post or pillar, and to index disks or strips carried by the pillar or post.

In the accompanying drawing showing illustrative embodiments of this invention, and in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts in the several figures, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through a loose leaf binder, the extensible pillar or post and one index disk being shown in side elevation, and one of the sections being shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the sections of the post. Fig. 8 is a vertical section on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 2, a part of the section however being shown in side elevation. Fig. 4; is a horizontal section on a line 4, 4 of Fig 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the sections provided with an index strip or disk. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a modified form of section. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section through a modified form of section adapted to cooperate with the section shown in Fig. 6.

In the illustrative embodiments of this invention shown in the drawing, 1 is a loose leaf binder having a back 2, a cover 3 and loose leaf pages 4:. As is usual in such constructions the cover and back are secured together by one or more extensible pillars or posts 5 formed of detachable sections 6, 6. As the leaves 4: in the loose leaf binder multiply by the addition of new accounts or are reduced by the withdrawal of old accounts, it is necessary to vary the length of the pillars 5 by either adding one or more sec tions 6 or withdrawing them from the pillar when it is desired to shorten its length.

By my invention I provide means for quickly attaching or detaching the different sections6, 6 to each other and I also provide an index strip or disk upon which any suitable letter or numeral may be placed to correspond with the usual front index (not shown). In my invention I provide in each section 6, Fig. 3, a female mutilated screw thread 7 at one end and a male mutilated screw thread 8 at the opposite end. As shown in Fig. 4: these mutilated screw threads are so arranged that one-eighth of a turn of the different sections 6, 6 will securely lock them together by the male section 8 being inserted in a cooperating female section 7, and given the required turn. I may also provide one of my sections 6 with a strip or disk 9 having two arms 10 and 11, one of these arms 11 is adapted to normally lie between the sheets of the ledger while the other arm 10 will protrude slightly in the rear of the leaves to permit any desired designating letter or numeral being placed thereon to form a rear index, corresponding, if desired, with the usual front index (not shown). It is, of course, to be, understood that either arm 10 or 11 may be used as a part of the index while the other would lie between the leaves of the ledger.

For purposes of illustration I have shown in Fig. 5 the letter C placed upon each arm 10 and 11 respectively to show that one or the other arm would always act as a part of an index. The number of the strips 9 may be varied; to avoid confusion in the drawing I have shown merely one. The section 6 upon which I mount the arms 10 and 11 may be of the same length as the other sections, or it may be of a different length as shown for instance in Fig. 1.

In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a female mutilated screw thread 12 on one section and a cooperating male mutilated screw thread 13 on another section. The two mutilated screw threads being adapted to bind and lock the sections together upon a quarter of a turn of the posts.

It will, therefore, be seen that by my invention the different sections 6, 6 can be either locked together or unlocked from each other with a minimum amount of labor and trouble, permitting the addition of new sec tions or the withdrawal of one or more sections as the case may be. The index disks or strips 9 also permit the user to determine at a glance approximately the location in the loose leaf binder where he desires to insert or remove one or more leaves.

By giving one of the sections 6, for example, the section immediately beneath the disk 9 shown in Fig. 1, an eighth of a turn the posts 5 may be separated at that point, and all the leaves between the cover 3 and the disk 9 may be bodily removed, to permit the insertion or the withdrawal of a leaf or leaves at this point of the binder, thereby avoiding the awkward and troublesome method of threading off and on all the leaves appearing, for example, between the cover 3 and the disk strip 9. The post 5 may be locked to the back 2 and the cover 3 in any suitable manner; I have shown nuts lat and 15 for this purpose, although it is to be understood that any other suitable means may be used if desired.

Having thus described my invention in connection with the several illustrative embodiments thereof to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

1. A section for an extensible post or pillar for a loose leaf binder, provided at one end with internal mutilated female screw threads and at the other end with external mutilated male screw threads, and an index strip or disk secured to the section.

2. A section for an extensible post or pillar for a loose leaf binder, provided at one end with internal mutilated female screw threads and at the other end with external mutilated male screw threads, and an index strip or disk secured to the section, said strip consisting of a plurality of arms.
