To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KIERNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Card-Holders for Album-Leaves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to prevent the rapid deterioration and destruction of the means employed for securing photographs, prints, cards, or the like, to the leaf of an album, scrap book, or other holder. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a picture card attached by retainers constructed in accordance with my invention to an album leaf or other support, not otherwise provided with means for retaining the card; Fig. 2 is a view of one corner of said support and of the retainer thereon from which the card has been removed; Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on enlarged scale, on the line aa, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a face view illustrating one method of applying my invention to the ordinary album leaf which is slotted for the reception of the corners of cards applied to each face of the same; Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating another method of applying my invention to such album leaf; Fig. 6 is an enlarged section on the line b?), Fig. 4; Figs. 7 and 8 are views similar to Fig. 4 but showing other means of applying my invention to slotted album leaves, and Fig. 9 is a sectional view illustrating a modification of my invention.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, 1 represents the leaf of an album or other support (hereinafter, for convenience, referred to as an album leaf) upon which a photographic print, picture card, or other object (hereinafter, for convenience, termed a card) is to be mounted so as to be readily detachable therefrom. When the album leaf is not slotted or otherwise constructed for the re ception of the corners of the card I mount upon it (or upon each face of it, if the cards are to be applied to both faces) in positions corresponding to the four corners of the card, tabs 8, each of these tabs having formed therein near its outer edge a diagonal slot 4 through which the corner of the card can be passed, as shown in Fig. 1, that portion of the tab which is located inwardly beyond the slot being secured to the face of Specification of Letters Patent.

the album leaf while that portion of the tab which is located outwardly beyond the slot is free from such connection, as shown in Fig. 3. The tabs are, by preference, double ply and comprise upper and lower members 5 and 6 secured to one another throughout, as shown in Fig. 3, and formed either by folding a single sheet of paper at the outer end of the tab or by superposing one sheet of paper upon another.
Embedded between the members 5 and 6 of the tab, outside of the slot 4:, is a reinforcing member 7 which may be composed of wire or other material available for the purpose, and which is bent around the ends of the slot, the inwardly bent portions of the reinforcing member being disposed in any manner desired in that portion of the tab which is located inwardly beyond the slot. The purpose of this reinforcing member is to strengthen the narrow band 8 presented by the tab outside of the slot 4 and also to prevent the spreading of the slot by the action of the corner of the card thereon or the tearing loose of the band 8 from the body of the tab inside of the slot by reason of the pressure of the corner of the card upon said band in applying the card to or removing it from the tab.
The card can be readily applied by slipping the corners of the same through the slots 4 and under the bands 8 and as readily removed by a reversal of such operation, and when the card is in place it is retained by means of a relatively narrow band crossing the corner of the card and therefore unobtrusive and unobjectionable.
A common form of card album at present in use is one in which the album leaf is provided with parallel diagonal slots 9 and 10 with intervening band 11, these slots being located in position to receive the four corners of a card, and cards being applicable to each face of the leaf, the card on one face having each corner slipped through the slots 9 and 10 and under the band 11 and the card on the other face of the leaf having its corner slipped through the outer slot 9 and covered by that portion of the leaf which is out wardly beyond said slot. In applying my invention to an album of this character I preferably secure to one or both faces of the slotted portion of the leaf a tab 8 which is large enough to contain and surround the slotted portion of the leaf so as to present portions outwardly and inwardly beyond tween the slots, as shown in Fig. 5;
In some cases the tab may be dispensed with and the reinforcing member may be embedded in the structure of a single ply leaf or inserted betweenthe'plies of a multiple ply leaf, and may be disposed in respect to the slots 9 and 1021s in Fig. 4 or Fig. 5, or it may be disposed in: respect to said slots as shown in Figs;- 7 and 8. In the construction shown in Fig. 7 two reinforcing members 12" and 13 are employed,-the member 12 being disposed outwardly beyond the slot 9 and having its ends bent inwardly around the endsuof both slots 9 and- 10, and the member 13 being located in the band" 11 and having its ends bent inwardly around the ends of the inner slot 10. In the construction shown in Fig. 8 a reinforcing member 14; is located-in the band} 11 and is split at the ends, one fork 15" being bent outwardly around the outer slotted portion 9 of the leaf and the other fork 16 being bent inwardly around the ends of the inner slotted portion 10 of the leaf. I
The reinforcing member may be secured to the face of the tab, as shown for instance at 17 in Fig. 9, or to the face of the leaf. In either case the retaining device in accordance with my invention can be readily produc'ed and applied within the limit 'of cost to which devices of this character are subject.
I claim:
1 An album leaf having a retaining portion with slot for the reception of the corner of a card, and a reinforcing device applied to that portion of the retainer outwardly beyond theslot.
2. An album leaf having a retaining portion with slot for the reception of the corner of a card, and a reinforcing device extending around the ends of the slot.
3. An album leaf having a retaining portion with slot for the reception of the corner of a card, and a reinforcing device applied to that portion of the retainer outwardly beyond the slot, and extending inwardly around the ends of the same.
4. An album leaf having a retaining portion with slot for the reception of the corner of a card, and a band outwardly beyond said slot and beneath which the corner of the card is disposed, said band being provided with a reinforcing device.
5. An album leaf having a retaining portion with slot for the reception of the corner of a card, and a band outwardly beyond said slot and beneath which the corner of the card is disposed, said band being provided with areinforcing device which extends in' wardly around the ends of the slot.
6. An album leaf having a retaining portion with two parallel slots through which the corner of the'card is passed, and an intervening band under which the corner of the card is disposed, with a reinforcing device disposed outwardly beyond a slotted portion of the retainer and bent inwardly around the ends of said slotted portion.
7. An; album leaf having a retaining portion with a pair of parallel slots andan in tervening retaining band therein, and'a reinforcing device applied to said retaining band.
8. An album leaf havinga retaining portion with a pair of'parallel slots and an intervening retaining'band therein, and a .reinfor'cing' device applied to said retaining band and extending inwardly around the ends of the slot which defines the inner edge of said band.
9; An album l'eaf'having a card retaining portion presenting a plurality of plies slotted for the reception of the corner of a card, and a reinforcing device confined between said plies. l
10. An album leaf having a card retaining portion presenting a plurality of. plies slotted for the reception of the corner of the card, and a reinforcing device confined between said plies and extending around the ends of the slotted portion of the retainer.
11. The within described card retainer for album leaves, said retainer consisting of a tab with a diagonal slot therein, that portion of the tab inwardly beyond the slot being secured tothe leaf and that portion of the tab outwardly beyond the slot being free from connection therewith, the outer free portion of the tab also having. secured thereto a re inforcing member.
12. The within described card retainer for album leaves, said retainer consisting of a tab with a diagonal slot therein, that portion of the tab inwardly beyond the slot being secured to the leaf and that portion of the tab outwardly beyond the slot 7 being free from connection therewith, the outer free portion of the tab also having secured thereto" a reinforcing member which extends around the ends of the slot.
13.. The within described card retainer for album leaves, said retainer consisting of a multiple ply tab having a diagonal slot formed therein, that portion of the tab which is inwardly beyond the slot being secured to the leaf and that portion of the tab which is outwardly beyond the slot being free from connection therewith, and having disposed between the plies of the same a reinforcing between the plies of the same a reinforcing member which extends around the ends of the slot.
