Description

April 14, 1964 R. J. BERTRAND NECKTIE ANCHOR Filed Aug. 24, 1962 FIG.2
FIG.3
mvmon. .1 BERTR ND ROGER BY ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,128,471 NECKTIE ANCHOR Roger J. Bertrand, 199 Washington St., West Warwick, RI. Filed Aug. 24, 1962, Ser. No. 219,155 3 Claims. (Cl. 2-145) The present invention relates to necktie anchors.
Neckties of the four-in-hand type, for example, are tied in a slip knot with the ends left hanging. Sometimes, it is difficult to keep the knot tight and in place at the collar. This is true especially if the necktie is made from a smooth fabric such as silk or rayon having a satin finish.
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide improved means for anchoring the knot of a necktie firmly in place at the collar of a shirt.
Another object is to provide a necktie anchoring means that is simple and inexpensive to produce.
A further object is to provide a necktie anchoring means which is long lasting and is unlikely to be damaged even though the necktie is cleaned repeatedly.
Yet another object is to provide a necktie anchoring means that is easy to use and is reliable.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the foregoing objects are achieved by the combination of a longitudinally extending tape which carries a plurality of snap fastener parts; and by an elongated tab which has a button hole at one end and a snap fastener part at its other end. The tape is secured to the back side of the necktie. It is attached at a predetermined location so that, when the necktie is tied and its slip knot is positioned tightly at the shirt collar, at least one of the snap fastener parts on the tape lies just within the knot. By fastening the button hole end of the elongated tab to the top button on the shirt and by fastening the snap fastener end of the tab to the tape snap fastener part that lies just within the necktie knot, the knot is anchored in place at the shirt collar.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a front view of a shirt collar and a four-inhand necktie that is anchored to the collar by means provided according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the necktie which has been tied in a knot, showing the tape and the tab which form the necktie anchoring means of the present invention; and
FIG. 3 is a back view of the necktie, showing the tape and tab anchoring means of the present invention.
Referring to the various figures of the drawings, where like reference numerals refer to similar parts, 11 is a four-in-hand necktie having opposite depending ends with an intermediate portion to encircle the collar and another portion intermediate the ends that is tied in a slip knot 12. The portion that forms the knot 12 is formed of two fabric layers comprising a front portion 13 and a rear portion 16. Stitched or otherwise fastened to the rear portion is an elongated tape 17 carrying a plurality of equally spaced fastener parts 18 or other suitable fastener means. As shown in FIG. 3, the tape is attached to the back side of the rear portion 16 along the longitudinal seam 21 and the fastener means are snap fasteners.
The tape 17 is made from cloth, for example, and is sewed or cemented to the necktie at a predetermined location so that with a four-in-hand or Windsor knot the tape will lie behind the front part of the knot. When the necktie knot 12 is tight and in place at the collar of a shirt, at least one of the fastener parts 18 will lie in an exposed position in the rear of the front part of the knot.
3,128,471 Patented Apr. 14, 1964 "ice A plurality of parts 18 are provided along the tape to ensure that a fastener part will lie in an accessible location regardless of the size of the neck of the necktie wearer. Also, regardless of any change in the relationship between the two ends of the necktie, which may occur each time the necktie is tied, one of parts 18 will lie just behind the knot 12.
The tape 17 and the snap fastener parts 18 constitute one portion of a necktie knot anchoring means. The other portion consists of an elongated tab 22, which at one end has a button hole 23 and at the other has a snap fastener part 26 attached to the tab 22. The fastener part 26 is adapted to mate with any one of the snap fastener parts 18 for securing the tab to the back of the necktie.
The necktie knot anchoring means is used in the following manner. Before tying the necktie, the button hole end of the elongated tab 22 is buttoned to the top button 31 along the front of a shirt so that the tab extends down from the top of the shirt collar 32. The necktie is placed around the collar 32 and is tied in a slip knot 12. The knot is drawn tightly and neatly in place at the top of the shirt collar 32 as is shown in FIG. 1. Once the knot 12 is in place, the snap fastener end of the tab 22 is secured to the snap fastener part 18 which lies just behind the front part of the necktie knot 12 and intermediate thereof. Any tendency for the knot to slip downward is blocked by the tab 22. When the tie is ready to be taken off, the snap fastener end of tab 22 merely is unsnapped from the snap fastener part 18.
Although snap fasteners have been disclosed as the means for securing the lower end of the elongated tab 22 to the tape 17, instead other types of securing means might be employed. For example, the tape 17 and the tab 22 could be made from self-adhering fabrics such as Velcro that is disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,717,437. Any other suitable means for securing the lower end of tab 22 to the tape 17 at a point just below the necktie knot 12 also could be used instead of snap fasteners.
Since other changes can be made in the device as specifically disclosed and different words of description might be used without departing from the spirit of the invention, it is understood that the invention is limited solely by the scope of the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. A four-in-hand necktie having end portions, a first intermediate portion to encircle the collar and a second intermediate portion for forming a knot, said knot forming portion having front and back surfaces, a first fastener part secured on said back surface, an elongated tab having a buttonhole at one end and a second fastener part at its other end attached to said first fastener part and extending perpendicular to said second intermediate portion, said tab being slightly shorter in length than the length of the necktie knot when the necktie is tied about the collar of a shirt.
2. A four-in-hand necktie having end portions, a first intermediate portion to encircle the collar and a second intermediate portion for forming a knot, said knot forming portion having front and back surfaces with a plurality of first fastener parts secured in longitudinally spaced relation on said back surface, an elongated tab having a buttonhole at one end and a second fastener part at its other end attached to a selected one of said first fastener parts and extending perpendicular to said second intermediate portion, said tab being slightly shorter in length than the length of the necktie knot when the necktie is tied about the collar of a shirt.
3. A four-in-hand necktie as in claim 2, wherein a 3 tape is secured to said knot forming portion and said first 1,764,705 fastener parts are attached to said tape. 1,825,898 2,133,296 References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 5 1,190,515 Clark July 11, 1916 202,794
