IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,437, dated October 31, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADoLPHUs HoEFsTADT, of the city of New York, in the county of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Ties 5 and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a front view of improved neck-tie when used as a bow; Fig. 2, a back View of the same; Fig. 3, a front view of the same when used as a scarf; and Fig. 4, a back view of the shield with the elastic loop for attaching the same to the shirt removed. y

The object of my invention is to make a necktie which can be used in the form of a common bow or as a scarf, according to the taste of the wearer.

In the accompanying drawing, A is the ordinary shield, to which the neck-tie is attached, and is provided with the usual elastic loop for fastening it t0 the shirt. B B are two iiaps of silk, satin, or other suitable material, and form vthe body of the neck-tie. They are secured to the front of the shield and folded over so as to cross each other, and nl/Lehlbyarm/g onclasp, C. (See Fig. 3.) This clasp `is movble up and down for the purpose of varying/the set of the tie. Fris' a cross-piece, of the same material as the iiaps, and is secured at one end to the upper portion of the shield, while to its other end is secured an elastic loop, F, which engages with a hook, G, on the back ofthe shield, and holds the crosspiece in p laee. bow-form, Fig. l, to that of a scarf, it is only necessary to disengage the elastic loop from the hook, when the flaps B B are pulled down until they assume the shape shown in Fig. 3. The cross-piece is then inserted between the ilaps above the clasp, and the loop fastened to the hook. To change back to a bow, the cross-piece is again released, the flaps pushed up until the clasp is about the center of the shield, and the cross-piece run between the ends of the iaps and fastened to the hook, when the neck-tie will again assume the shape of a bow, as seen in Fig. l.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The cross-piece E, loop F, and hook G, in combination with the shield A and aps B B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
