Description

UNITED] STATES f PATENT OFFICE.
c. L. LocKWooD, oENEvv YORK, N. Y.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,317, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. LooKWooD, ot1 the city, county, and State of New York, l have invented an Improved Retainer for Bows, l Scarfs, 85e.; and I do hereby declare the foll lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a plate or retainer adapted for confinement in front of a shirt-collar, a bow or tie, and certain securing devices, the whole being constructed and adapted to each other, as fully described hereinafter, so that the bow or scarf can be readily secured to or detached from the plate. I
In order to enable others skilled in the' art to make and use my invention, I will nowproceed to describe the mode ot carrying it into effect.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a partof this speciiication, Figure l is a rear view ot' my improved retainer for bows, scarfs, Sto.; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the linel 2, Fig. l.; Fig. 3, a front view of the tie and collar 5 Figs. 4, 5, and 6, detached views drawn to an enlarged scale, and Figs. 7 and S, views representing a modification ofthe invention.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is an ordinary bow or tie, within the fold a of which is confined a strip, b, of card-board or other equivalent material, and to the latter is attached a metal plate, d, by passing the corners ot' the same through openings in the card-board and turning down the said corners, as seen in Fig. 5.
From the plate D projects a T-headed pin, E, the stem e of which is surrounded and einbraced by a piece, f, of gum-elastic.
D is the retainer, consisting of a metal plate the two arms h h of which occupy' a position between the folds of the collar H, the lower end ofthe plate being provided with a spiral spring or rubber loop, t', for passing over the front button, which contines the collar to the neck-band ofthe shirt. This retainer may be similar, as regards its external shape and its arrangement within the folds of the collar, to
that for which Letters Patent were granted to J. A. Eshleman on the 31st day of January, A. D. 1865. It has, however, an opening consisting of two oblong slots, m and n, crossing each other at right angles, as seen in Fig. 6, the length of the slot n being sufficient to admit the head g of the pin e, while the slot m is shorter, being ofthe samelength as the notched portion of the head g between the points .r of, Fig 5.
When it is desired to attach the how to the retainer the head g is passed through the slot a, and the piece f of gum-elasticis compressed until the retainer can be turned round so that the notched portion ot' the head shall coincide with the slot m. The retainer is then released,
when it is forced by the gum-elastic against the head g, the notched portion of the latter now fitting in the slot m, and the bow being thus securely fastened to the retainer.
The mode of detaching the bow will be readily understood without explanation.
In the modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8 there is au opening, m', at each side of the slot n, iu place of the slot m., and in the center of the head q is a single notch, leaving two projections, each ot' which fits into one ofthe openings m' when the pin is turned at right angles to the notch n, as shown in Fig. 8.
A spiral spring coiled round the stem e and secured to the plate l may be substituted for the rubber-f.
' I Wish it to be understood that I do not desire to claim the `retainer D of itself 5 but I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A plate or retainer adapted for continement in front of a shirt-collar,'a bow or tie, and devices whereby the bow may be secured to or detached from the retainer, the whole being constructed and adapted to each other, slibstantially as described.
In testimony whereot'I have signed in y name to this specification lin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES L. LOOKWOOD.
Witnesses CHARLES E. FOSTER, W. J. It. 'DELANE
