Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
H. M. HEINEMAN, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR NECK-TIES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,4111, dated October 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: V
Beit known that I, HARRY M. HEINEMAN, of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Neck-Ties, Src.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved device for fastening or securing a neck-tie, cravat, scarf, or other article usually worn upon the neck of a person to the collar of the same; and it consists of a fastening or clasp of such a nature as to be susceptible of being readily fastened on or detached from the collar, so that if the necktie, cravat, or other article worn for a similar purpose be first attached 'in any suitable manner, by sewing or otherwise, to the same, such cravat, Src., can be then applied to the neck and there se cured and held with the least possible amount of trouble or annoyance, and in a manner entirel y independent ot' the button to which the collar is buttoned upon the front side of the shirt; consequently not producing the least strain upon such button or the threads by which it is secured to the shirt, which, with all other fastenings or holders for a purpose similar to the present fastening, has been the cause of much -annoyance and inconvenience to the wearer by the frequent breaking away of the said threads or of the button.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improved fastening or clasp is illustrated, Figure 1 being a view of the same as attached to a cra-vat; and Fig. 2 a central section of the fastening, taken in the direction of its length and in the plane of the line w fr, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents my improved fastening for neck-ties, cravats, &c., to shirtcollars, which fastening consists of two arms or jaws, B and C, hinged together at one end, D, and extending one over the other in the direction of their length, with a clasp, E, arranged upon and over said arms in such a manner as to embrace the two and be susceptible of being moved and slid forward and backward thereon, and so that when moved in the one direction, or toward thefree ends of the arms, it will serve to bring them to.
gether, one upontlle other, and there tightly hold them, or by moving it in the other di'- rection, or toward their ends hinged together, release their loose ends from each other, and thus leave them free to be opened suciently to remove whatever material may have been placed between the loose ends of the said jaws or arms.
To one of the jaws B and C the fastening is secured by sewing', riveting, or in any other proper manner, to the cavat, neck-tie, scarf, or other article to which it is to be applied, as plainly shown in the drawings, and with the fastening extending in such a direction as to be entirely covered and concealed by the cravat or neck-tie, 85e., as the case may be, when, moving tbe clasp or slide Ein the proper direction to allow the jaws to open from each other, the said jaws 'are placed over the lower edge of the loose end of a collar, at a suitable point of the same to bring the cravat to the proper position upon the person, and there se cured by sliding the said clasp in the proper direction to bring the two jaws together, and thuscause them to tightly bind and secure the collar end in and between them, as is obvious without any further explanation.
From the above description of my improved fastening for neck-ties, cravats, Src., it is plainly apparent that they are secured to the neck in a manner entirely independent of the button by which the collar is buttoned in front to the shirt, the importance of which has been hereinbefore stated Afand that, furthermore, in lieu of attaching the cravat to the fastening, it may be independent thereof, and yet be secured to the neck by my fastening, by simply inserting the proper portion of the said neck-tie, in connection with the end of the collar, between the jaws of the fastening, and there tightly securing the two by properly moving or sliding the clasp therefor.
I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent- The fastening A, consisting of the two jaws B and C and clasp or slide E, arranged and connected together and constructed so as to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose specied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 10th day of July, 1866.
