IMPROVEMENT IN COLLAR AND NECK-TIE ATTACHMENTS.

Speciii'cation forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,646, dated November 13, 1866.

To all whom t may concern: l

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. POWELL, of Milford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and Improved Collar and Neck-Tie or Cravat Holder 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.

The present invention relates to a new and improved holder fora collar and neck-tie or cravat, the object of which is to provide a holder for such articles upon which they can both be properly adjusted or securedbefore being placed upon the neck of the person who is to wear them; and it consists of anarrow and thin band, made of metal, india-rubber, gutta-percha, a woven fabric, or any other proper material or materials possessing flexibility and either elastic or non-elastic, having at suitable points of its length metallic loops and hooks of such form that the collar and neck-tiecan be properly adjusted ou and secured to the band and retained in such position, and then, by means ofloops or other suita` ble fastening devices, securely attached to and around the shirt-band, the many advantages obtained by which will be hereinafter specified.

In accompanying plate of drawings my improvement is illustrated, of which- Figure l is a view of the front portion of the same; Fig. 2, a plan view of its upper edge; Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, detail views of portions of the same; Fig. 7, a view of a collar and necktie secured to my improved collar attachment.

A in the drawings represents a narrow and thin band or strip, which may be either made of metal, india-rubber, gutta-percha, or woven fabric, or any other suitable material or materials, whether elastic or non-elastic, but possessing sufficient iieXibility to be bent into a curved shape corresponding to, and of a length a little greater than, the size of the neck oi' the person who is to wear1 it. Around this band A,

at an equal distance from each of its ends B and C, is secured a metallic clasp, c, having two short projecting arms or hooks, b l), upon the outside of the band, extending in the same direction with its length.

To each end of the band A is secured a metallic clasp, D D2, the one, D, upon the end B terminating in a ilat piece, E, having upon its outer end two narrow bent pieces or lips or hooks, c, and upon its inner end, at its upper edge, a similar bent lip or hook, cl, extending toward its outer end. The other metallic clasp, D2, upon the end C of the band terminates in a perforated plate, F, bent upward, and projecting above the band, back of which plate, upon the upper edge ot' the band, is a bent piece or hook, f, similar to the hooks c upon the end B of the band, and extending in the same direction therewith, a portion, G, of the clasp D being` cut and bent up, so as to be at right angles to the length of the band A, projecting from each edge of the saine.

With the project-ing arms Gr ofthe bandclasp D2 the hooks c of the other end of the band are interlocked when it is desired to bring the two ends of the band together, the bent hooks el and f of the band being then alongside of each other, with the hook j' upon the right-hand side, as plainly shown in the drawlngs.

Half-way between the center clasp, a, of the band and each of the clasps at its ends is secured a metallic clasp, H, having a sharp point, lt, projecting beyond the outside of the band, which points, when the collar is secured to the band, as will be presently explained, are

'inserted in the collar to more securely hold it in place.

I and J are elastic loops respectively secured to the inside ot' the band at its center and at or near its end I3, by which loops the band is attached to or buttoncd upon the neck-band of the shirt, they being in the proper positions for the back and front buttons of the same.

In the use of my improvement hereinabove explained, the collar, by its back button-hole, is iirst placed upon the center double hook or arms, b, of the band A by setting it at right angles to the band and then inserting one of the arms l) in the same, when, turning or swinging the collar around upon such arm, the other arm can be readily inserted, after which the hooks d and f at each end of the band are inserted in the button-holes of the collar at the side of the band forced into and through the collar, thus securely fasteningit to the said band. The neck tie or bow then placed upon the outside of the collar, fastened to the band A', as above explained, the perforated upright plate attached to one end of the band entering the bow, and firmly and securely holding` it in place, when, by simply placing,` the back loop of the band upon the back button of the neck-band/of the shirt and the front loop upon the front button thereof, and brin gA ing` and hooking its two ends together, as before explained, the collar and neck-tie are necessarily' in proper place, as is obvious without any further explanation.

Among the many advantages of my im provement may be here mentioned as the most important the following: first, that the collar and neck-tie can be fastened and adj usted upon this band before being placed around the neck of the person who is to wear them, thus obviating the necessity of using` a mirror for arranging,` the collar and tie, as has heretofore been the case; second, the collar can be worn until so soiled as to be unfit for use without removing it from my improved holder each time the collar is taken off of the persons neck; third,

the annoyance and trouble of buttoning` or pinning the collar and neck-tie to the shirt-band are entirely avoided.

It may be here remarked, in conclusion, that the loops for securing the improvement to the neck-band of the shirt may be dispensed with and hooks substituted for them of such shape that the improvement, with collar and neektie attached to it, can be secured to the shirtband without the use of buttons.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten tvA band having clasps, loops, and spurs for the attachment of a collar and necletie, all arranged substantially as described.
