NiTEn STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECKTIES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,536, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may cancel n:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. HART, Jr., of Philadelphia, in the county otl Philadelphia'and State of Pennsylvania, have inventeda new and Improved Gravat-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full', clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitcation.
The present invention relates to a new and improved holder for cravats, neckties, scarfs,
, bntteries, socalled, and other similar arlicles of wearing-apparel, by means of which the cravat, necktie, or scarf, &c., can be readily secured in position upon the neck of the person, and removed therefrom without injuring or soiling the collar in the least degree, said holder being also so formed that it can be readily attached to or detached from the cravat, Sto., at pleasure.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improved cravat-holder is illustrated, Figure 1 being a view oi' the back side of a necktie or cravat with it applied thereto, and Fig. 2 a front view of the necktie or cravat, showing it in position upon a collar.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Ain the drawings represents my improved cravat-holder, which is made of hammered sheet-brass, or other suitable sheet met-al or material having similar characteristicsthat is, stili'ness with sufficient lexibility to allow it to be bent without breaking which cravatholder is made of the form shown inthe drawings, Fig. l, with a similar wing, a, upon each side at its upper portion, and with two similar projecting arms, b, from its lower edge, e, said arms forming an acute angle or crotch, d, with each other at their point ot'jnnction with the main or central portion, f, of the holder A.
rEhe holder A, Vhaving the general form above specified, is bent in the direction of its length into the shape of a curve corresponding to the general curved shape of a persons neck, so that when placed thereon it will nicely and closely tit about the same throughout its whole length. To this holder A the cravat or necktie B, upon its back side, is to be secured bysewing, riveting, orin any other proper manner, with its wings aslightly projecting above the upper edge of the cravat, andso that the crotch or angle d of its two arms b will be midway, or nearly so, between the two eXtreme ends l1l of the cravat, and a little above its center Z, as Vplainly shownin the drawings, which holder, thus secured to the cravat or necktie, when the cravat is to be placed upon the neck of a person, is set by its crotch d upon the front button of the neckbinding of the shirt, between it and the ends of the collar buttoned thereon, when, slightly depressing one end of the cravat by turning it and its holder upon such button, one wing, a, ot' the holder is placed under the end of the turned-down portion of the collar neXt to the same, the other wing of the holder then being similarly placed under the other end of the collar, and the whole afterward adjusted so as to bring the cravat in proper position with reference to the collar and neck of the person wearing it, the holder A firmly retaining the cravat in position, as it is preventedV from dropping ont of its place by the resting of' its crotch d upon the collar-button, and also from moving laterally or in any other possible direction, as is obvious without further explanation.
In order to render the holder A susceptible of being readily attached to and detached from the necktie or cravat at pleasure, and thus allow one holder to be used for several cravats, in lieu of securing it by rivets or Sewing or other similar manner, as before eX- plained, I make in the central portionl of the holder, and extending in the direction of its length, a short slot, m, through which is passed an elastic loop, a, secured at each end to the necktie, and then around and over the angular arms of the holder, when, by the elasticity of such loop, the holder is tightly held in place upon the cravat, as plainly seen in Fig. 1, the elastic loop, if the holder is to be detached from the cravat, being simply drawn over the ends of its arms, when the holder is free to be removed, as is obvious.
The holder A may, if desired, be japanned, or otherwise suitably colored to correspond with the color of the cravat, dto., to which it is to be applied, so that such portions of it as are exposed to sight will not mar the appearance of the cravat, and l deem it best at least' to protect it, by some suitable coating, from arms b b, and slot m, constructed and operatthe e'eots of exposure to the atmosphere; butI in g substantially as described.
do not Wish to limit myself to any particular surface-covering for the bolder, as that will depend entirely upon the taste of the wearer or manufacturer.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A eravat-holder provided with Wings au,
The above speeieation of my invention signed by me this 8th day of December, 1865.
