Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. ARMS, OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,451, dated June 12, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, JAMES C. ARMS, ot' North ampton, in the county of Hampshire and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Paper Bosom and Collar 5 and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of ret'- erence marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the invention, I will proceed to descr' be it.
Figurel is a front View, and Fig. 2 a side elevation ot' the same, like letters indicating like parts in both figures.
My invention consists in constructing a paperl bosom and collar combined in a novel manier, as a new article of wearing-apparel.
In ,the drawings, A represents the bosom, constructed of paper, in the forni and style described in my recent application for a patent thereon.
B represents a central plait, formed by folding the paper as described in my previous application, though in constructing my present article the plait may be formed in any other manner if preferred, especiallyif the bosom and collar shall be made of a single piece of paper.
C represents a collar of the style known as stand-up 7 collar, which is made of the proper size and form, and attached to the bosom at front by any suitable means. This collar is open behind, each of the ends beingprovided with a button-hole, c, whereby, when the two ends are brought together and lapped over each other, they may be secured to a button on the shirt-band in the usual manner. Another button-hole, a, is made at the center, in front, as shown in Fig. l, by which it is also secured to the shirt-band at the front.
Instead of making this front button-hole a through the collar, it may, it' preferred, be made in a small projecting strip ot' cloth or paper secured to the npperinsidc edge of the bosom at that point.
In practice l tind it easier and better to form the collar ot' a separate piece, and then attach it to the bosom; but it is obvious that by using the proper-shaped dies they may both be 1n ade of a single piece.
Any style of embossingorimitation ot'stitching or any imitation ot' cloth may be adopted on either the collar or bosom, or on both, as may be desired, these, however, forming no part ot my present invention.
I am aware that paper bosoms have been made with bindings attached, to which a collar may be adjusted, and made to stand at such angle as to adapt it to the neck of the wearer. This I do not claim, my collar being attached to the bosom independently ot' any band, and by such means as will determineits angle therefrom and permit its conformation to the neck of the wearer, as shown, thereby obvating the expense of the band.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A new article of manufacture consisting of a paper bosom and collar combined, when constructed as herein shown and described.
