UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINER IV. BRUCE, OF KNOX CENTER, NEBRASKA.
NECKTIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,811, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed November 13, 1888. Serial No. 290,681. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINER BRUCE, of Knox Center, in the county of Knox and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckear, of which the following is a full, clear, and ,exact descrip tion. 7
The main object of the invention is to provide neck-wear which may be adjusted in position with neatness and dispatch, the necktie being of a novel construction for this purpose, and the necktie and collar being preferably relatively so formed that the adj ustment of the tie may be expeditiously effected without marring the appearance of either article.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and defined in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a necktie and standing collar embodying my improvements, the collar being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a turn-down collar and a portion of a necktie, and Fig. 3 is a rear view of a portion of my improved necktie.
The necktie or scarf illustrated is, with the exception of the retainers or neck-tapes, of the usual form, comprising a shield and flaps; but it will be understood that the invention may be applied to other forms of scarfs as well.
The scarf A, in the form shown, is provided with two retaining tapes or hands a a, of the same material as the scarf, extending from the top of the scarf at opposite corners, and of a length to extend partly around-the collar, and each is provided at or near its end with a l10OlCCL each of which hooks is adapted to be engaged in a small aperture b formed in the collar B, preferably near the bottom of the latter.
The tape or band a, as shown, is permanently united to the necktie A by stitching or otherwise, while the tape or band a is shown detachably held to the body of the tie the usual neckband of ordinary neckties. The hook a? of the fixed band or tape a is preferably carried by an elastic tab a that is affixed to the said tape.
In adjusting my improved necktie on turndown collars, as in Fig. 2, the detachable tape or band a, is removed and its hook a engaged in the corresponding aperture of the collar. The hook (t of fixed tape or band a is then engaged in its corresponding aperture 1), after which the free end of the detachable tape a is inserted in the tie and the latter adjusted in the same manner as is commonly done with a tie having a single neckband for maintaining it in place.
In adjusting one of my improved ties on a standing collar where the hook of the permanent band is fixed to an elastic tab the detachable band or tape is properly fixed to the tie and its hook engaged in the corresponding aperture of the collar. The hook of the permanent tape is then hooked into the hole of the collar, the elastic tab permitting of the neat adjustment of the tie.
The hooks on the retaining-tapes, it Will be understood, are the preferred means of fastening the tapes to the collar.
Haying thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A necktie provided with two retaining tapes or bands at a, extending from the opposite upper ends of the shield partly encircling the collar, one of said tapes being permanentlysecured to the shield, the other detachable, both of said bands carrying hooks a at or near their ends, adapted to engage with the apertures arranged in the sides of the colla'r, the hook upon the fixed band being secured to the same by means of the elastic tab 0. substantially as shown and described.
MINER WV. BRUCE.
