'NECKSCARF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,428, dated March 29, 1881.

To all whom it may concern: y

Be it known that I, EDGAR K. BETTS, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and staterof New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Neckscarfs, of whiclf 'the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to produce a scarf which may be readily reversed to expose different sides,cither covered with the same material or two different materials, to view, and to so construct such scarf that it may be easily and properly laundered.

, The invention consists in the combination, in a reversible scarf, of a strip or piece forming the body, a cross-piece forming flaps or tabs, and a neckband permanently secured to said cross-piece in such manner that it may be swung laterally to enter either side thereoii. The neckband is preferably secured to said cross-piece by means of a central swivel, aid said cross-piece has button-hole-shaped sl'ts or slots on both sides of said swivel, through either of which the neckband may be inserted; The said cross-piece is also preferably capable of being turned inside out, so as to present either surface for use. The fastening whereby the strip or piece forming the body and the cross-piece are secured together maybe provided with a device, such as a pin, for securing the free end of the neckband.

The invention also consists in the, combination, in a reversible scarf, of a strip or piece forming the body, a cross-piece forming flaps or tabs, and a neckband permanently secured to said cross-piece in such manner that it may be swung laterally to either side thereof.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a scarf embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a back view thereof with the neckband broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the upper part thereof. Fig. A is a side view of the fastener, whereby the main strip or piece and the cross strip or piece are connected. Fig. 5 is a face view of the main strip or piece of the scarf, and Fig. 6 is a face view of the cross-piece and neckband.

B designates the cross strip or piece, which may be faced with material or materials to correspond with the main strip or band A A. WVhen in use it is folded or doubled at the middle, along the dotted line 0, across the body A of the main strip or piece. This cross strip or piece is provided with holes (I (1, preferably titted with eyelets, which, when the said strip or piece is in place, come opposite the hole I) The eyelet in the hole d serves,in this example of myinvention, to secure to the central portion of the cross strip or piece B a neckband, O, of ordinary style, and in such manner that it may be adjusted, as upon a swivel, at different angles relatively to the said cross strip or band. This neckband may also be faced with material or materials to correspond with the main strip or piece A A. A fastener, D, here shown as consisting of a button-like device having flexible prongs, may be passed. through the holes I) d cl and bent over at the back, so as to clinch and secure the main strip or piece and the cross strip or piece together. This fastener, while it may serve as a button for securing the free end of the neckband C after it is passed around the neck, is here shown as provided with apin, E, which extends from it, so as to be capable of engaging with the free end of the neckband for the purpose of securing it. When the fastener is thus made in the same piece with the device for securing the free end of the neckband the number of pieces comprised in the scarf is lessened, and the operation of taking it to pieces for reversal or laundering is simplified.

To detach the parts of this scarf the prongs of the fastener D are bent up so as to pass through the holes I) d cl in the main strip or piece and the cross strip or piece, whereupon the said strips or pieces may be separated.

If the scarf is to be reversed, it is only necessary to fold the main strip or piece reversely along the dotted lines a, and to fold the cross strip or piece reversely over the body A of the main strip or piece, and to secure it by means of the fastener D. It will be readily understood that in one case the neckband will be fastened at the outside, and when the scarf is reversed at the inner side, of the cross piece or strip 5 but this is immaterial, because the neckband may in either case be slipped from one side to the other through button-holeshaped slits G or button-hole-shaped slits G. These slits serve to hold the neckband in proper position relatively to the top of the scarf, and, if they be made slightly smaller than the neckband, can serve as a fastening for the free end of the latter.

If the scarf is to be laundered, there will be only two straight pieces, one having the neckband attached to it to operate upon. Hence there will be little or no liability of so distorting the shape of the tie in the process of laundering it as to mar its appearance. When the laundering is completed it is only necessary to fold the main strip or piece at the dotted lines a, so as to form wings A, crossing each other,

to fold the cross strip or piece at the middle over the body A of the main stripor piece, and to insert and clinch the fastener D, whereupon the scarf will be ready for use.

If desirable, the neckband may be sewed to the cross strip or piece in lieu of being fastened thereto by an eyelet; but in such case it would be permanently secured to the righthand side of the scarf when the latter is reversed, and might prove somewhat awkward. I prefer the connection by means of an eyelet, because it provides for swinging the neckband over to the left-hand side of the tie when it is reversed, so as to make the scarf equally convenient with either face exposed for wear.

The neckband may be fastened by an eyelet to the main strip or piece, and in such case the cross strip or piece may be detached when soiled and slipped into place again and secured with its back face outward. As this will be the part of the scarf most quickly soiled, it maybe advantageous to secure the neckband to the main strip or piece.
