NECKTIE-FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,409, dated February "r, 1882, Application ledgNovember 16, 1881. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, LEO'N MICHAUX, a citizen of the Republic of France, resident in Paris, in the Department of Seine, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ecktie-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a plan of ny im proved fastening device applicable to a tie. Fig. 2 is a vertical'section through line A B, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through line C D, Fig. 1. Fig.4 is a rear view of a tie adapted for a turn-down collar provided with my improved fastener. Fig. 'is a similar view of a tie adapted for a standing collar and prolvided with a fastener of a slightly-modified construction. Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan of the fastener shown in Fig. 5. Figs. 7 and 8 are sections laid through lines A B and C D, Fig. 6, respectively. Fig. 9 represents a bosom-scarf provided with the fastening. Fig. 10 is an enlarged plan of the fastening shown in Fig. 9. 'Figs. 1l and l2 are sections laid through lines A B and C D, Fig. 10, respectively; and Fig. 13 is a detail view of the fastening-hoolcwhich is used with the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

My invention has relation to devices for the attachment or fastenings of neckties and cravats of different kinds and styles to permanent or detachable collar-buttons; and it'consists in the improved device hereinafter more fully described and claimed. This device may vbe modified according to the style of necktie or cravat with which it is to be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, the general elements of which are in all cases substantially the same.

My improved fastening is composed of a plate, a, preferably made of sheet-brass or other sheet metal, .although hard rubber, Celluloid, or other suitable material maybe used, if desired. The shape of this plate depends upon the style of cravat with which it is to be used. Thus, in Fig. l the plate is made with two wings, a a', to adapt it for use with an ordinary tie or so-called butterfly-tie.7 which is shown with its fastening in Fig. 4. Where the device is to be used on a tie or cravat ot' the same style adapted for a standing collar a hole, d, is punched at one end, asv shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to receive the hook or button e at `the free end of the band f, the hook being attached to the band by means of a plate, c', having small holes punched through it, as shown in Fig. 13, by-means of which it may be stitched to the band. In the middle part of plate ais cut a vertical slot, b, which has an enlargement, b', at its lower end. That part of the plate Where the enlargement is is bent into the shape shown in the sectional views represented in Figs. 2, 7, and 1l, so as to form a right-angled knee, b2. Plate a on both sides of the slot, about midway between the enlargement b and 'top of the slot, is embossed to form semicircular bosses c c. Small holes are punched in the body of the plate for stitching it to the cravat, as shown in the several figures of the drawings. g

The cravat provided with this fastening is attached to the collar-button byinserting the head ofthe latter through the enlargement b', and then slipping the button-shank up into the narrow slot b, or rather slipping the slotted plate down upon the shank until the head of the button rests in the recess formed bythe two semicircular bosses c c. The operation of attaching or detaching the fastener to or from the collar stud or button is greatly facilitated by the bent knee b2, which, standing out from the body of the-plate, permits the head of the button to enter the enlargement b easily in attaching the device, and to slip out as easily in detaching it. bosses c c causes the plate to be held in its proper place and position upon the stud onbutton without slipping.
