COMBINED NECKTIE AND COLLAR BUTTON.
No. 298,458. Patented May 13, 1884.
STATES IINTTE PATENT rice.
COMBINED NECKTIE AND COLLAR-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,458. dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed February 27, 1884. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADELBERT L. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of IViscohsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Necktie and Collar-Button; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined necktie and collar-buttons.
My invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the necktie from its back or inner side, the collar-button to which it is attached, and one form of device for attaching the tie to the button. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the collar-button in which is shown a side view of the device for attaching the necktie thereto. Fig. 3 also represents a vertical section of the collar-button in which is shown an end view of the device for attaching the necktie. Fig. 4 showsthe pin and retaining-spring formed in a single piece.
Like parts are represented by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
The collar button A is provided with a socket or recess, B, through its head 0 and neck D, for the reception of the spring-catch E. The catch E consists in the rigid arm F and the flexible upward-extending arm G.
Around the exterior surface of the arm F is formed a groove, a, for the reception of an inl m i ll ieetinei ens fenc d .iethereccss B, at its upper endfin which groove said hang-en retaihed'hy'the action of the springarm G, which is adapted to press outward against the opposite side of said opening orrecess B, thereby crowding said arm F firmly against the said inward projecting flange, whereby said catch E is prevented from being disengaged from the button. \Vhen desirous to remove said catch, it is readily disengaged by pressing the tie M and arm F, to
which it is attached, toward and against said spring-arm G, whereby the spring-arm will yield enough to permit said groove a to be disengaged from the retaining-edge of said recess when the catch and tie are removed. When desirous to attach the tie, it is necessarysimply to insert said spring-catch E in said socket or recess B, when said spring-arm G readily yields as the catch enters and permits the catch to engage against the retaining-flange, as mentioned. If desirous, the catch may be made to engage in a flange located in the neck D, below the head or against the side of the neck, in which case the head may, if desired, be made removable with the spring-catch and tie. The projecting end of the catch E is provided with an eyelet or loops, 1), by which the same is connected to the tie in any way desired, either by means of a safetypin, H, as shown, or by sewing the same to the tie permanently with a needle and thread. I prefer a detachable pin, however, as I am enabled thereby to readily change the button from one tie to another.
My device is used as follows: The collarbutton A is first attached to the neckband of a shirt and the ends of a collar in the ordinary manner, and the spring-catch E is attached to the tie by a'safety-pin, H, or other means, as indicated, when the tie and catch thus connected are attached to the button and permanently held in place by inserting said catch E into the opening or recess B, as mentioned.
When using ties having neckbands, the spring-catch E may be substituted by a solid stud, as the neckband will prevent the stud frombeing withdrawn from the socket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In neck-wear, the combination of a collar-button, a safety-pin, and a necktie, said safety-pin being detach'ably connected to the shank of said button, substantially as set forth.
2. In neck-wear, the combination, with the collar-button A, having opening or recess B, of the spring-catch E, having circular recess a, eyelet b, safety-pin H, and necktie M, said eyelet b serving as a place of attachment for said safety-pins, said pin H serving to teinpog being adapted to serve (LS a means of attachrarily connect said tie with said spring-catch ing a necktie to the collanbntton, as set forth. 10 and the collar-button, substantially as and for In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the purpose specified. presence of two witnesses. 5 3. In a necktie-fastener, the combination, I
with the collar-button A, having socket B, of the spring-catch E and fastening-pin H, formed in a single piece, said spring-catch and pin ADEL'BERI L. GILBERT. 3 \Vitnesses:
