UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN KERNGOOD, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
GARNI ENT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,470, dated December 22, 1896. ippncaanfnedliugu'a19,1895. sel-inno. 559,724. @toman To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HERMAN KERNGooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners 5 and Idohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to waistbandfasteners, and has for its object certain improvements in construction to prevent the hook being pulled out of the waistband and the hasp moved lengthwise.
The fastener is designed for use on the waistband of pantaloons, overalls, and other garments and is provided with prongs or spurs to embed in or engage the fabric of the lining` of the waistband, as will be fully disclosed in the following y specification and claim.
In th e accompanying drawings, which form part of this specilication, Figure l represents the upper part of a pair of pantaloons provided with my improved waistband-fastener; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the hook and a transverse section through the hasp as attached to awaistband; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the hasp as attached to a waistband; Fig. 4, an enlarged perspective of the hook, andFig. 5 a like view of the hasp.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the waistband of a pair of pantaloons; B, the hook part of my fastener, which comprises a plate a, having a hook b bent up above the plane of the plate and provided with laterally-extending shoulders c c, holes CZ CZ, and a prong or spur e, which prong extends toward the front end of the hook and below the plane of the body of the hook.
' In attaching the hook to the waistband of a garment the prong e is made to embed itself in or engage the fabric of the lining f and may then be pressed down upon the fabric, and the hook may be further secured by being sewed to the lining through the holes CZ CZ in the usual manner, or the sewing may be omitted. rIhe prong e, thus embedded in or engaged with the fabric, takes a large percentage of the strain usually exerted upon the thread. To further secure the hook against strain, the cloth g is sewed down over the shoulders c c.
The hook thus constructed can be securely attached to the waistband, and the greater the strain upon the hook the deeper the prong embcds itself in the fabric and resists the strain.
In the manufacture of the hook the prong is cut from the body or plate a by the die that forms the blank from which the hook is made.
C indicates the hasp, which is provided with shoulders Zz h, extensions M, having holes or openings 7o 7i; therein, and the metal cut out of the extensions t' Z is'bent downward at a right angle to the plane of the extensions to form one or more prongs Z Z, which also em-l bed themselves in the fabric of the lining f and serve to prevent the hasp moving longitudinally. The extensions t' t' at their ends adjoining the shoulders ZL Zt are of the width of the shoulders and diminish in width outward to a point at their ends, which requires the fabric to be pierced` only to enablethe extensions to be inserted in the fabric, and the hasp may be further secured to the fabric by stitching or sewing around the metal of the extensions through the openings 7c Zo. The hasp is also formed in a die, and the prongs Z form integral parts of the hasp, and in attaching the hasp to a garment it is sewed on through the openin gs Zt 7c in the usual manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is A garment-fastener comprising a hook, and a hasp having extensions at each end of the width of the hasp at their inner ends, tapering outward and provided with an opening and prongs cut out of said extensions and bent downward at a right angle to the plane of the extensions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
