PATENT OFFICE.
W'ILLIS JAY GALLUP, OF NEIV RICHMOND, WISCONSIN.
SKIRT AND WAIST FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 642,790, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed July 12, 1899- Serial No. 723,532. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS JAY GALLUP, of New Richmond, in the county of St. Oroix and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skirt and waist Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for conveniently and securely fastening together around the waist the two sides of a placket of a ladys skirt and also for holding the dress-waist at the back, thus connecting these two parts of a ladys dress so as to make them mutually cooperate in holding said two parts together and preventing all unsightly gaping or showing of the white underclothing at this point.
It consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of fastener hereinafter fully described, and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the parts as applied to the back part of the skirt and the waist Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3; Fig. 4, a detail of the part A, and Fig. 5 a detail of the part B in an incomplete or partially-formed condition.
In the drawings, A represents a flat piece of spring metal having in the middle 2. projecting lip a at the top edge; which is .provided with a horizontal slot, into which the attachment to the waist is to be hooked, as hereinafter described. The fiat metal strip A has one end perforated along its edges and is to be sewed into the hem or fold of the Waistband of the skirt on one side of the placket, with its other end projecting as a tongue. On the metal stripA there is rigidly fastened, by riveting or otherwise, aheaded stud a. The other portion of the fastener is composedof a thin metal plate B, (see Fig. 5,) which is stamped out with a broad extension 13 near one end, which is wider than the body-section and is subsequently folded around the body portion, as shown in Figs. land 3, to form a flat hollow tube, which acts as a keeper to receive and hold the free or tongue end of the section A. The section B has perforations near its edges to receive stitches, by which it is secured in the hem of the waistband of the skirt on the opposite side of the placket from section A. The section B has through it a keyhole-slot b, the circular end of which is large enough to receive the head of stud a, and which latter after passing through said circular end is slipped longitudinally into the narrower portion of the slot, where it is securely locked in place.
0 is a broad hook-shaped clip of thin metal having perforations along its upper edge; by which it may be sewed into the lower edge of the waist W of the dress. This hook-shaped clip is adapted to be engaged with the slot of p the enlargement a on section A, as shown in Fig. 2.
My invention is designed to be so cheaply made as to be incorporated with and form a part of the dress, and when so applied the section A has its projecting tongue entered into the keeper B until the stud a passes through the slot 1) and locks to the end thereof. This secures the two sides of the placket P P, and the elongated keeper B protects the clothing and skin from any abrasive action or discomfort which the tongue might otherwise cause. The clip 0 on the waist is then hooked into the slotted enlargement or, and when so connected the waist serves to hold up the skirt in the rear and the skirt reciprocally acts to hold down the waist. The strains caused by the weight of the dress are thus evenly and comfortably distributed over the person and all unsightly gapingis avoided at the placket and the waist-line.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a two-part clasp having a detachable locking connection, an elongated keeper constructed in one piece with one of the sections by an extension of one of its edges, said extension being folded transversely across the body portion to form a flattened tube substantially as described.
2. In a two-part clasp having a detachable locking connection, an elongated keeper constructed in one piece with one of the sections by an extension of one of its edges, said extension being of greater width than the body portion of the said section, and being folded entirely across and around the other edge of the same to form a flattened tube substantially as described.
3. A combined skirt and waist fastener, adapted to be attached to the Waist and be consisting of a thin strip of metal with aprohooked into the slotted lip substantially as jecting and slotted lip on 011 one edge about described.
