EMMA FERNEAU, OF PAULDING, OHIO.
COMBINED GARMENT SUPPORTER AND PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,256, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed August 8, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA FERNEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paulding, in the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Combined Garment Supporter and Protector, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined garment supporters and protectors.
A principal object of the invention is to provide in a single structure effective means for suspending a skirt from the shoulders of the wearer, shields for the axillarj7 spaces, and means for securing said shields in position without permanently attaching them to the outer garments.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a structure of the class described means for connecting a waist or body garment with the skirt so as to hold the skirt and waist in proper association at the back and to prevent any sagging of the skirt.
A further object of the invention is to pro- Vide in a device of the class described means whereby a skirt and waist or body garment may be conveniently and positively secured to the supporter and may be readily released therefrom when desired.
A iinal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified which shall be adjustable for use by persons of widely-different sizes and which shall be so constructed as to require a minimum amount of material and cause no discomfort to the wearer.
Generally stated, the invention comprises a yoke, short sleeves attached thereto, shields permanently associated with said yoke and said sleeves, a waistband or belt, connections between the yoke and the waistband, and suitable devices upon the waistband for attaching a body-garment or a skirt thereto. In describing the invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which is illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion,
Serial No. 168,814. (No model.)
and exact mode of assemblage of the elements therein exhibited may be made without departing from the invention or sacriiicing any of these advantages.
In the drawings, Figure l is a View in perspective of the combined garment supporter and protector, the View being taken from in front and slightly above. Fig. 2 is a detail View in section through one of the fasteners at the rear of the waistband, showing the mode of securing a waist and skirt thereon. Fig. 3 is a detail view in section through one of the fasteners at the rear of the waistband, showing portions of a waist and skirt secured thereon.
ln the drawings corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates generally the yoke, comprising members 2 2, passing over the shoulders of the wearer, a connection 3 at the back of the yoke, provided with a slide 4E for adjusting the length thereof, and straps 5 and 6 at the front of the yoke, the latter being' provided at its end with a buckle 7.
Attached to the slioulderspieces 2 at the upper and outer margins thereof by sewing or otherwise are short sleeve members 8, provided at their lower margins with elastic bands 8, and permanently associated with the sleeve members 8 and shoulder-pieces 2 in suitable relation thereto are shields 9, of any suitable waterproof material, which are of the ordinary form and are adapted to iit under the arms and protect the outer garments from perspiration.
vExtending downward from the yoke-pieces 2 at the backvare webs 10, the upper ends of which are preferably secured to the yokepieces adjacent to the points of attachment of the connection 3. The webs 10 are provided with slides 11 for varying the length thereof, and at the lower looped end of each web is provided a guide-loop 12, in which slides a strap or web 13, the ends of which are secured in the manner shown to the waistband 14. Attached to the shoulder-pieces 2 ofthe yoke in front adjacent to the points of attachment of straps 5 and 6 are narrow webs or tapes 15, each of which is provided with a slide 16 for adjusting the length thereof.
In the lower looped end of each of the webs 15 is provided a guide-loop 17, in which is supported a looped end 18, having secured to the bottom thereof a loop 19 of cord or other suitable material, forming a buttonhole for engagement with a button 20, which is secured by means of a loop 21 of cord or tape to the waistband 111.
The waistband 14C is preferably wider at the back than in front and is provided at one end with'a buckle 22, with which the other end is adapted to engage, as shown, the buckle being provided at the front of the waistband for convenience in fastening. At the back of the waistband below the points of attachment of the webs or straps 13 are firmly secured fasteners 23, each consisting, preferably, of a base 24, a shank 25, disposed at right angles to the base, and a head 26 of elongated form, pivotally secured to the outer end of the shank and adapted to be held at right angles thereto or in alinement therewith, as desired. At the lower margin of the waistband in front are suspended by short tapes 27 safety-pins 28.
The fastening devices 23 are adapted for engagement with both a waist and a skirt, and the mode of connecting the waist and skirt with the waistband by the use of fastening devices 23 is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, in the former of which the heads 26 are shown in alinement with the shanks to permit the passage over the heads 26 of the waistband of the waist and skirt, which are provided with opening's of suitable size to permit the insertion of said heads. In the latter figure the heads 26 of the fastening devices are disposed at right angles to the shanks and show the waistbands of skirt and waist effectively hold in position by the elongated headswhich project both above and below the shanks of the fastening devices.
The pins 28, suspended from the lower margin of the waistband 14 in front, are adapted for engagement with the waistband or other adjacent portion of a skirt to prevent sagging' and may or may not be used, as desired.
By means of the slides and buckles in the connections and suspension-webs of the supporter it is easy to adjust it to conform to the figure of the wearer, and it is therefore unnecessary to manufacture the supporter in many different sizes.
By means of the construction hereinbefore described it is possible to support a skirt entirely from the shoulders without causing the wearer any inconvenience. The waist and skirt are positively secured in proper rolation, so that they cannot become dissociated,
and the shields are so held in position under the arms that they cannot crumple or become displaced. The necessity of sewing the shields to the outer garments is thus completely obviated, and the shields are so secured that they cannot become disarranged, so as to be ineffective or to cause the wearer discomfort.
It is to be understood that in the manufacture of my combined garment supporter and protector fabric of any suitable material may be used and any suitable ornamentation may be placed thereon; but as the materials used and the ornamentation applied to the device form no part of this invention no description and illustration of any specific fabric or orna mentation have been made.
Having' thus described the construction and use of my invention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination in a single structure of a garment-supporter comprising a yoke and garment-suspension devices carried thereby,
bers and devices upon said waistband for securing' a skirt and a waist thereto.
3. A combined garment supporter and protector comprising a yoke consisting of shoull der-pieces and adjustable connections therebetween, sleeve members permanently associated with said yoke, shields attached to and forming part of said sleeves and said yoke, adjustable suspension members depending from said yoke, a waistband supported by said suspension members and devices on said waistband for fastening a waist and askirt thereto.
4f. A combined garment supporter and protector comprising a yoke, sleeve members permanently associated with said yoke, shields permanently associated with said sleeve members and said yoke, adjustable suspension devices depending from said yoke, a waistband permanently associated with the suspension devices at the rear and detachably connected withthe suspension devices at the front, and devices on said waistband for positively engaging a skirt and a waist.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto axed my signature in lthe presence of two witnesses.
