MAURICE DISTELMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SKIRT AND WAIS'l' HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,327, dated January 13, 1903. Application filed July 31,1902. Serial No. 117,824. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom, tn/tay concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE DISTELMAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a -new and Improved Skirt and Waist Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a skirt and waist holder for womens garments; and one object that I have in view is the provision of asimple and cheap article which is adapted to hold the lower portion of a dress-waist, particularly the kind commonly known as a shirtwaist, from pulling up and away from the dress-skirt.
A further Objectis the provision of an article which may be drawn and held down tightly over the abdomen of the wearer to secure the appearance or eect known as a straight front, the overlapping front parts of the article when applied being disposed compactly together and secured firmly in place.
A further object is to providemeans associated with the article for holding the skirt in proper place and against any tendency to drop 'at the rear portion, thus making both the waist and the skirt present a neat and attractive appearance.
With these ends in view the invention consists of a skirt and waist holder embodying novel features of construction and arrangement, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a detail perspective view showing my improved article applied to a dresswaist and attached to an underskirt, the outside or dress skirt being omitted. Fig-2 is a detail perspective view of the article. Fig. 3
is a vertical sectional view through the rear'- part of the improved article and showing it in position for'engagement by fastening members which are attached to the skirt-band; and Fig. 4 is a detail view, in elevation, of a portion of the waist-belt,showin g the fastener members, which coperate with similar members on the skirt-band.
The improved article of my invention contemplates the employment ot' a waist-belt 5, which is provided at one end with a buckle 6, of any usual construction, said buckle having a series of tongues 6a, which are adapted to be fitted in a series of eyelets 7, the latter being applied to the other meeting portion of the belt 5. The belt is provided near the buckle and the row of eyelets with the depending straps 8 9, which may be attached in any suitableway to the belt, and are preferably disposed in the parallel relation shown more clearly by Figs. 1 and-2. One strap 8 is provided with a member 1`0 of a fastener, the other member 11 of which is secured to the free end of that part of the belt 5 which is provided with the eyelets 7, whereby the end of the belt may be adjusted into overlapping relation to the strap 8, and the members 10 11 of the fastener serve to confine the overlapping end of the belt in close relation to the strap. These depending straps 8 9 are provided at their lower free ,ends with fasteners of any suitable type--for example, the safety-pins 12, the latter adapted yto be secured to the underskirt C, as indicated by Fig. 1, when the belt is fitted ar und the dresswaist A. v
The rear part of the belt 5 is provided with Y an elastic strap or tape 13, which is secured at its-end and middle portions to the belt, as at 14, in a manner to provide normally an allowance of slack in the rear part of said belt. (See Fig. 2.) This elastic strap is secured to the inside face of the belt, and to the outer v face of said belt at the middle rear portion thereof are fastened the members 15 of ballandsocket securing devices. A portion of the dress-skirtis indicated at B in Fig. 3, and the waistband b of said skirt is provided on its inside face with fastener members 16, the
skilled in the art, I do not consider it necessary to more particularly describe the same nor the means for attaching them to the waist-belt or the garment.
In using my device the shirt-waist or other dress-Waist A is irst adjusted to the person, and the belt 5 is then passed around the body, so as to lie over the lower portion of said Waist A. The belt isdrawn tightly around the waist of the wearer, so as to stretch the strap 13 and take up the slack in the waist-belt, after which one end of the belt 5 is passed through the buckle 6 in order that the tongue 6 thereof may engage with the row of eyelets 7, and finally the members 10 11 of the fastener are engaged in order to con- Iine the overlapping end of the waist-belt across the strap 8. The user draws the belt downwardly and manipulates the pins 12, so as to fasten the straps to the underskirt C, thereby holding the device snugly around the waist. After the dress-skirt shall have been put on the waistband bis manipulated in a manner to make the fastener members 16 engage with the members of the Waist-belt.
The improved device serves to snugly hold the lower portion of the waist A around the person, and the engagement of the skirt-band b with the waist-belt prevents the skirt from dropping at the back portion thereof, Whereby the article is adapted to hold the Waist and the skirt snugly to the person and to prevent displacement of these parts.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl 1. A device of the class described, comprising a Waist-belt having means for uniting its free ends, an elastic strap secured to the back portion of the belt and providing normally an allowance of slack therein, depending straps attached to the waistbelt near the meeting ends thereof, fasteners on said straps, and a two-part fastener having one member attached to one of the straps and another member fastened to a free portion of the belt independently of the elastic strap which is adapted to overlap said strap.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a combined waist and skirt holder, comprising a waist-belt having means for uniting its meeting ends, an elastic strap attached to the rear portion of said belt and arranged on the inner face thereof` to provide normally an allowance of slack, straps depending from the free portions of the belt and having suitable means for attachment to an underskirt, and fasteners each having one member attached to the outer side of the belt at the rear portion thereof and the other member thereof adapted for attachment to a dress-skirt.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing'witnesses.
MAURICE DISTELMAN.
