SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,311, dated June 16, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH IVALTER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons and Clasps Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improved button and clasp, and has for its object. to provide a clasp adapted for spring engagement with the head of a stud-such as a collarbutton, for instance-and also to provide a means whereby such buttons and clasps to be used in conjunction therewith may be employed as fastening devices for articles of apparel.

The invention consists in the novel construction of the clasp, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a vertical section through the collar and a portion of the neckband of a shirt, illustrating the application of the clasp to a collar-button as a medium for holding the necktie-band in proper position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of such a clasp detaehed.

The clasp A is constructed of spring metal and is essentially cup-shaped or semicircular, and the metal at the mouth of the clasp is scalloped, and the scalloped surfaces are separated by recesses 10, preferably circular, thus forming a series of tongues 11, the upper scalloped or beveled surfaces of which are bent inward, as illustrated at a, forming con vexed inner surfaces 0, and from thence are curved or made to flare outward, as illustrated at a whereby the diameter of the clasp at its center is made greater than at the conveXed surfaces a. The head of the stud or button is preferably circular, and is of such diameter that it is capable of loosely fitting in the body of the clasp, but so that some force must be employed to carry the head past the convexcd inner surfaces at at the mouth of the clasp, which surfaces prevent the button-head from leavingthe socket until purposely withdrawn.

In order that the clasp may be removably and adjustably connected with a necktieband, a curved shank A is formed integral with or attached to the back of the clasp. The shank extends downward from the clasp, and the convexed face of the shank isimmediately below the mouth of the clasp. The shank is provided with a longitudinal opening 17', which extends through from side to side, whereby the shank acts in the nature of a slide, and the neckband .18 of the necktie is passed through the opening in the shank.

The operation of the device is very simple, as when the clasp is forced over the head of a button the tongues of the clasp are forced outward, permitting the head to pass the convexed surfaces a and enter the body of the clasp, and when the two sections of the device are thus united it requires some force to separate them, much more than would be brought to bear thereon by the ordinary movements of the body.

The head of the button may be either flat or cylindrical upon its upper or outer face, and when the device is employed as a fastening for garments the head is preferably somewhat flattened and the clasp is made to correspond.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A clasp for engaging theheads of collarbuttons, consisting in the shank A, having a longitudinal opening 17 to receive the neckband of a scarf and provided on its upper end with a laterally-projecting cup-shaped clasp to receive the head of a collar-button, substantially as set forth.

2. A clasp for the purpose described, consisting of an essentially-cup-shaped body provided at its mouth with a series of springtongues, said tongues being curved inward in the direction of the center of the body near their free ends and outwardly curved at said ends, and a shank curved downward from the body, provided with a loop-like opening, as and for the purpose set forth.
