COLLAR-BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led July 22, 1909.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Serial No. 508,897.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, FREDERICK M. YONK- MAN and NICHOLAS YONKMAN, bot-h citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and Sta-te of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar- Buttons; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. Our invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in claims, its object being to provide simple, economical collar-buttons each provided with a necktie-holder.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan view of a combined collar-button and necktie-holder in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of the button from which the necktie-holder is detached; Fig. 8, a similar view of said button with said necktie-holder therewith drawn out; Fig. 4, a like view showing the necktie-holder in normal position, and Fig. 5, a. horizontal section of the device on the plane indicated by line 5 5 in Fig. 1l, all of the views being on a greatly enlarged scale for the purpose of clearly illustrating the construction of the device.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 6 indicates an annular sheet-metal base having a. central outwardly extending taperbore conical projection 7, and the edge of said base is crimped on an annular fla-nge 8 of a hollow sheet-metal stern 9, which shank is partly conical to inclose said projection of the base but otherwise preferably flattened in cross-section. The outer end of the stem is crimped on a central hollow boss 10 of an annular sheet-metal plate 11, and crimped on the plate is a semi-elliptical head 12 having a central slot 13 therein.
Guided in the base-proj ection 7 and plateboss l0 is the round shank 14C of a hook 15 that is normally engaged with the slot 13 approximately flush with the head 12, except for lug 16 thereof by which its clearance of said head is facilitated. As shown by dotted lines the inner end of the hookshank 14 is reduced and extended through a conical wedge-sleeve 17 against which it is upset to bind'said sleeve against a shankshoulder 18 that is a result of the reduction. When the hook is drawn out clear of the button-head, the wedge-sleeve 17 binds in the taper bore of the conical projection 7 of the button-base 6 to hold said hook in adj usted position, and the button-stem 9 being partly flattened, it cannot automatically shift in buttonholes of a shirt and collar with which it is engaged. Hence if the button be properly engaged with said buttonholes, the hook aforesaid will always be in proper position for engaging and holding a necktie between it and the button-head, said hook being pushed back to normal position when the engagement of said necktie therewith is effected.
The general proportions, construction and arrangement of parts constituting the button proper are such, that in practice the base-projection 7, stem 9 and boss l0 are to be taken together as constituting the button shank specified in the claims, and the hook-shank and wedge-sleeve therewith are practically one.
We claim:
1. A hollow collar-button having the head thereof provided with a slot, and a slidable hook normally engaging said slot approximately flush with said head, except for an outwardly projecting lug with which said hook is provided, the hook-shank being guided in the button-shank in which it has limited outward movement.
2. A hollow collar-button having a slotted head, and a slidable hook that normally engages the head-slot, the shank of the hook being guided in the sha-nk of the button with which it has wedging engagement when said hook is withdrawn from normal position.
3. A hollow collar-button having a slotted head and partly taper-bore shank, a slidable hook that normally engages the head-Slot, the hook-shank being guided in the buttonshank, and a conical wedge-sleeve on said button shank engageable with the taper portion of said button-shank bore when said hook is withdrawn from normal position.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK M. YONKMAN. NICHOLAS YONKMAN. Witnesses:
GEO. W. YOUNG, GEORGE G. FELBER.
