SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 397,042, dated January 29, 1889.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH WVEIL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guard-Pins for Securing the Neckbands of Scarfs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the pins used for fastening the neckbands of scarfs; and the object of my invention is to provide a new and improved pin-guard which facilitates fastening or unfastening the neckband and guards againstpricking the fingers with the point of said pin.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of a scarf provided with my improved pin-guard. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are face views of different constructions of my improved pin-guard. verse sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 4.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The pin A is made of any suitable wire, and is secured to the shield B of the scarf 0 in any well-known manner, so as to project from the bottom edge of said shield in the usual manner.

The guard D is composed of a U-shaped or loop-shaped wire, and is fastened to the shield B in such a manner that the pin is between the two shanks of the guard and the point of the pin is a short distance from the closed end of said guard.

As shown in Fig. 3, the pin and guard may be made integral of a single piece of wire, the pin projecting downward from one of the shanks of the guard, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.

The combined pin and guard maybe sewed or otherwise fastened directly to the shield B, or it may be secured to a plate, E, of leatherboard, hard rubber, or metal, said plate being Fig. 5 is awertical trans-' provided with apertures F, through which threadcan be passed for fastening the said plate on the shield.

If desired, the guard and pin can be composed of separate parts, both secured on the same plate, E, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

To secure the neckband, the closed free end of the guard D is pressed toward the back of the scarf and the band G pulled upward, whereupon the pin enters the band.

To unfasten the neckband, the closed free end of the guard is lifted slightly from the back of the scarf and the band pulled downward.

The neckband can thus be fastened or unfastened very easily and rapidly, and the pin cannot prick or cut the fingers.

I claim 1. The combination, with an article of neckwear and a neckband, of a pin projecting from the bottom edge of the shield part of said article of neck-wear, anda wire guard surrounding said pin, also projecting from the bottom edge of said shield part and connected with or fastened to the shield part at that end only opposite the one that is adjacent to the point of the pin, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combined pin for fastening neckbands of scarfs and a guard for said pin, composed of a piece of wire bent to form a U- shaped or loop-shaped guard, the upper end of one shank being extended downward between the shanks of the guard and pointed to form apin, and the other end of the wire being adapted to be attached to the shield or plate, substantially as herein shown and described.
