L. COLE. NEOKSOARF.
No. 401,690. Patented Apr. 16, 1889.
N PETERS, Pmwumu m her. wman um D. c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS COLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
N E c K 5 CA R F SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,690, dated April 16, 1889. Application filed January 12, 1889- Serial No. 296,215. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarfs, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved scarf. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same, in which only a part of a neck band or tie, o, is shown. Fig. 3 is a side view, in which the knot b is shown in vertical section on a plane parallel to the edge of the scarf. Fig. 4 shows the extended body of the scarf in plan view.
Like letters of reference denote like parts throughout.
The object of my invention is to produce a scarf for gentlemens neckwear in which the body of the scarf shall be reversible and adjustable end for end and face for face, each independently of the other, and to attain said ends I construct my improved scarf substantially as follows, namely:
-I construct a shield or knot, 12, as a single piece or part, (independent of the body a.) To one edge of said knot is attached a tie, 0, formed, attached, and fastened in the rear of the knot by means of a pin in the usual manner, or equivalent device, as shown; or said knot may be fastened by means of a loop hung in the collar-button.
The body a of the scarf is formed independent of the said other parts, and of which the main part is of the usual parallel or substantially parallel sided form, but of which the ends a and a are pointed, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and at the tips of said points is attached a loop, (1, preferably made of elastic cording. It is not by any means essential, however, that the end of the said body a be made in the said pointed or any other form, or that the elastic loops cl be attached to the tips of them, as the purpose of my invention is fully attained if the said ends are square, as shown at one end of the body a in Fig. 4 in broken outlines, nor is it necessary that a loop d be attached to said end or edge, as the said end or ends may be provided. with a button-hole, cl, as shown in broken outline; and in lieu of said devices any other equivalent device may be employed that will hold said ends in their place, as indicated in the several Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In fact, the ends of said body a may be of any desired form.
WVhen the several parts are constructed as here shown and described, one of the ends of the body a, as a or (L is passed through the knot 5 until it projects above it far enough so that it may be turned over the top and back edge of the knot and fastened by means of a button, 6; or, in lieu of any such mechanism, a simple pin, or even a few stitches, may be passed through said end and knot; or a hook and eye, or any other known suitable fastening device, may be used. The front and back of the body Cb may also be finished alike, so as to have two faces. By means of this construction the body a of the scarf may be turned end for end, and also face for face, whenever desired, and in this way new and unworn parts may be presented to view easily and quickly, and thereby the economy and wearing qualities of the article greatly enhanced.
What I claim is In a scarf, an independent knot, Z), provided with neckband, in combination with an inclependent removable body, a, whereof each of its front and back sides and each of its ends are finished so as to be reversible face for face and end for end, and of which the upper end of said body is passed through and beyond and turned down over the upper back edge of said knot and fastened to the back side thereof, substantially as specified.
LOUIS COLE.
