Description
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
'INVENTOR 63244 4 #761974 5* --n ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT orrics.
FRANK WIBERLEY, 'OF JAMAICA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR "10 BABTHELS MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF GLENDALE, YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
WEARING-APPAREL.
To a]? whom 2'! may cancer-1i Be it known that I, FRANK VIBERLEY, a citizen of the l nited States and a resident of Jamaica. in the county of Queens and State of Xew York. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in earing- Apparel, of which the following is a specification. 1
The invention pertains more particularly to soft turn-down collars and to-the combination therewith of novel button-hole tapes or loops for engagement with the usual collar-button which receives the customary button-holes provided in the projecting end portions of the inner fold or neckband of the collar.
It is well known that turn-down collars have had secured to adjacent end portions of their outer fold, certain button-holed tabs to engage the usual collar-button for retaining said portions in desirable position during the use of the collar and employed as a substitute for links and other devices made use of to accomplish the same purpose.
My invention serves to dispense with the aforesaid button-holed tabs and links and the expense and inconvenience incident to their employment. and provides the collar with novel button-hole tapes or loops which may be produced and applied at small expense and which arereadily adapted when placing the collar on the neck-band of a shirt. to collar-buttons varying in size and position.
The button-hole tapes or loops of my invention are each in one integral piece of woven tape f lded over upon itself and comprising two thin flat end portions and an intermediate portion. constituting the loop proper. which is round or circular in cross-section and very much. less in width than said fiat end portions into which the ends of said intermediate cord-like portion merge. tape are utilized as means whereby the folded-over tape may be conveniently'sewed to the outer fold of the collar and not leave an unsightlyprojection or thickness, and the intermediate circular portion of the tape serves as a button-hole to engage the collarbutton. The button-hole tape'of my invention is very strong and durable and the loop thereof not only dispenses with the working of button-holes but is elongated and flexible and may be bent up or down to Specification of Letters Patent.
The two flat ends of the reach the collar-button in accordance with the position of the same.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented. reference being had to the accompanying drawings. in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a turndown collar embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an elevation. on a larger scale, of one broken-away end portion of the same, the outer fold of the collar being shown as turned upwardly to expose the button-hole tape secured thereto;
Fig. 3 is a corresponding View illustrating a desirable method of applying the button-hole tape to the collar;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the strip of tape which when folded produces the buttonhole tape of my invention, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the strip of tape as folded over but without the thin flat end portions thereof as having been placed against each other.
In thedrawings. 1O designates the neck-.
band and 11 the outer turned down fold of a collar which except for the presence of my invention. may be regarded as of usual formation. The neck-band 10 has in its projecting end portions the usual button-holes 12 to engage a collar-button. not shown, and said band may. if desired, also be provided with a concealed button 13 and an upper button-hole 11 to engage the same.
Patented Dec. '7, 1920.
Application filed June 28, 1919. Serial No. 307,368.
To the end portions of the outer fold 11 v are secured. preferably by sewing, the but-- ton-hole tapes 15. each .of which comprises, inone integral piece, two thin flat end portions 16 and an intermediate loop portion 17 which is circular in cross-section and serves as a button-hole to engage the collaredges of the fold 11 and register as nearly as required with the button-holes 12 in the band 10, as shown in Fig. 1, and the flat end portions 16 of said tapes are concealed at the inner side of said fold 11 and sewed to the inner ply thereof or to the lining of said fold 11, if said fold has a lining, if desired. I may superimpose the fiat ends 16 of the button-hole tapes and secure both of said ends by the same line or lines of sewing to the inner ply of the fold 11, and said fiat ends may be, secured to said inner ply on its exposed face, as shown in Fig. 2, or they lar and improve the collar.
abrasive action as might tend to detach them may besecured betweeii the, plies of said told 11, as shown in 3, in which event the loop 17 will be projected through an eyelet-hole 18 formed in the inner ply of the outer told 11. 'henthe button-hole tapes are secured in the manner shown in Fig. 2 they may-readily be renewed, if necessary, by an inexperienced person, and when said tapes are secured in accordance with the method indicated in Fig. 3, the flat ends 16 become concealed and protected against such from the collar.
The button-hole tapes 15 are produced by weaving strong threads together to produce both the thin flat ends 16-having selvage side edges andthe roundor cord like reduced intermediate portion'17,and hence said tapes and the button-holes or loops In the use of the collar, the button-holes 12 will first be applied on the collar-button, as usual, and then preferably'after the scarf has been positioned, the loops 1-7 will be applied on the same collar-button; the'tapes my button-hole tapes constructed and prothen serving to control the end portions of the outer fold of the collar. p r
I regard the collar hereinbefore described equipped with my new button-hole tapes, as a new article of manufacture; and I regard duced as described, as novel in themselves.
What I claim as m invention and desire to secure by Lettersatent, is v 1. A soft turn-down collar having in its neck-band portion button-holes to engage a collar button and having secured to its outer fold button-hole tapesaflording loops substantially in register with said button-holes and to engage said collar button, said buttonhole tapes each beirflig in one integral woven piece having thin at ends and a reduced intermedlate cord-like part very much less 7 loop servin tions in width than said end portions and at its collar button and having secured to its outer fold button-hole tapes aifording lo'ops substantially in register with said button-holes 'andto engage said collar button, said buttonhole tapes each being in one integral woven piece having thin fiat ends and a reduced intermediate part which is circular in crosssectionand very much less in width than said flat end portions and at its ends merges into said end portions, and which intermediate part provides the loop to engage the collar-button.
H 3. A soft turn-down collar having in its neck-band portion button-holes to engage a collar button and having secured to its outer fold button-hole tapes afi'ording loops, substantially in register with said button-holes and to engage said collar button, said buttonhole tapes each being in one integral woven piece'having thin flat ends and a reduced intermediate part afiording the loop to engage the collar-button and which intermediate part is of cord-like formationand -very much less in width than said flat end portions. and at its ends merges into said flat portions, and said fiat ends being concealed between the plies of said outer fold and the inner ply of said outer fold having a hole throu h which said loop extends.
'4. n combination with an article of apparel, a button-hole tape sewed thereto toengagea button, said tape being in one integral woven piece having thin flat ends to receive sewing-stitches and a reduced intermediate projecting part which is substantially round in cross-section and afiords a asa button-hole to engage a button, sai intermediate part being very much less in width than said flat end porand at its ends merging into'said portions.' a
Signed at Jamaica in the county of Queens, and State of lTew York, this 24th day of June, A. D. 1919.
