:1 Claim. (01. 24129) This invention relates :generally to.- devices that are used for: fastening collars to the neck-bands of-shirts.

The main obj ectof. the invention: is "to. provide a collar fastening deviceref simples-construction, which is permanently securedto the neck-band of the shirt and-which serves to both closesaid therneckeband and may have-a rear button hole forssecuringthe collar to the rear of the neckneck band and to conrfortablyz fasten aremovable collar thereto.

A further object of the invention is to provide a collar fastening device of'the character above described which will hold thev collar in snug engagement with the neck-band of the shirt. To effectuate this object, the device includes a'flexible shank secured to the neck-band of the shirt and is equipped with means at the end thereof for securing the OthBI' free end of the neck-band. and the free ends of'the "removable 'collar" without causing any inconvenience or irritation to the wearer and without putting the wearer to the trouble oi inserting a finger inside of the neckband of the shirt during the operation of fastening the collar to the neck-band.

A further object of the invention is to provide a collar fastening device to take the place of the usual front collar-button now generally used for securing the free ends of the neck-band and attaching the ends of the collar thereto, the said fastening device being inconspicuous, permanently attached to the neck band, free of projections which contact the neck of the wearer, and which does not detract from the appearance of the shirt and collar.

These objects and other incidental ends and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the progress of the disclosure and as pointed out in the appended claim.

Accompanying this specification is a drawing showing a preferred form of the invention where- 1n:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a mans shirt equipped with the improved collar fastening device secured to one end of the neck-band.

Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the shirt shown in Figure 1 through the plane 2-2 thereof.

Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the shirt of Figure 1 showing a collar attached at one end to the collar fastening device, the other end of the collar being free for completing the attachment to the said device.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the shirt shown in Figure 1 showing a collar fully attached thereto by means of the collar fastening device.

Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view of Figure 4 across the plane 5-5 thereof.

In accordance with the invention and the preferred form shown, numeral it indicates a mans shirt provided with a neck-band l l. 52 represents any type of collar adapted to be secured to hand by the-usual ba'ck collar-button, the 'said button hole and back collar-button not being showninl-thedrawing.

The collar fastening device consists of a flexible shank i3 which is secured at the inner end as by stitching It adjacent the free and I5 of the neck-band H. The opposite end of flexible shank I3 is provided with a head member I 6 which is of greater diameter than shank I3 and which is secured thereto in any conventional manner as by stitching through a depending stud H. The stitching between stud ii and the outer end of flexible shank i3 is indicated by numeral 18, said stitching penetrating an opening E9 in the stud. Of course, it is understood that head l6 may be secured in any other manner to shank l3 and may be of any suitable material such as a button of pearl, plastic, or metallic or nonmetallic material. Shank :3 is elongated so that there will be sufficient room between the head I6 and the neck-band ll secured through button hole 2B3to accommodate the end thicknesses 2| and 22 of the collar-band of collar iii.

In Figure 3 the neck band it is shown closed by means of the collar fastening device and also shows the collar band end 22 engaged by the collar fastening device through the button hole 23. In Figure 4 collar band end ii is shown also secured inplace by means of the collar fastening device through button hole 23.

In appearance the collar fastening device hereabove described is no different, from the conventional front collar-button after a detachable collar is secured thereon. Further, the device appears no different from a collar button as applied to the neck-band I l.

Flexible shank I 3 of the collar fastening device is preferably constructed of fabric in a rodlike formation, or may consist of any type and shape of flexible core suitably covered or wound externally with thread. The flexibility of shank l3 makes the collar device durable especially from the standpoint of laundering. As is known, laundering has a deleterious effect on buttons sewn to a shirt such as button 25 on shirt I0.

Such buttons crack and become loose from the attaching thread 26 by virtue of starching and ironing in the laundering process. This may be attributed to the lack of flexibility or yield of the button securing means to the shirt. In the invention herein laundering has no effect whatsoever on the durability of the fastening device because of the length and flexibility of shank [3. Moreover, since the collar fastening device may be made of non-metallic material throughout, laundering will not cause any corrosion Whatsoever.

Since shank I3 is secured to the collar-band H at its rear end as has been heretofore described by means of any type of stitching thread [4, such stitching will not be effected by the steps of the laundering process and is as permanently secured to the shirt as are the shirt seams. The head member I6 on the other hand is durable with respect to the steps of laundering and otherwise because of its spacing relative to the ends of the neck-band and the ends of collar [2.

A feature of the device is that it binds the free ends of the neck-band and of the collar together so that the collar feels snug and is not I likely to pull away from the neck-band. Moreover the device does not detract from the appearance of the shirt and collar but presents a normal appearance.

It is further understood that although a mans shirt has been illustrated, the invention is applicable to other garments of all types for men, women and children, and that the use of the a term mans shirt in the specification and claim is not to be construed as exclusive.

I claim:

In the combination of a mans shirt having a neck band provided with a button hole adjacent 1 one free end and a detachable collar having attaching button-holes, a button member, an elongated flexible shank connecting said button member to the neck band adjacent the other free end thereof whereby said button member is yieldably engageable with said neck band button-hole and said collar button holes together and selectively for rendering said neck band and collar adjustable to variations in the sizes thereof.
