Description

C. A. ROLFE.
SHIRT CUFF.
APPLIQATION m2o MAR.8.1911.
,360,687. Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
60M HDM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. ROLFE, F ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
SHIRT-CUFF.
Application filed March 8,
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLEs A. RoLFn, a citizen of the United States, resident of St. Paul, county of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Cuffs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the cuffs ofsgarments and particularly to shirt cuffs, and
vembodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a view of the cuff showing a cuff-button inserted,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the cuff, showing the position of the cuff-button.
In the drawing, 2 represents a portion of a shirt sleeve to which is attached a cuff 3, said cud being of the'so-called French or soft variety and therefore unstarched. In wearing this type of cuff same is adapted to be .folded back along the center line 4, while the two button-holes 5 are provided therein at each end equidistant from the eenter line 4. When the cuff is folded along the line land the ends brought together for fastening, the button-holes 5 are all brought into line so that a cuff-button 6 may be readily inserted therethrough. I have found, however, that cuff-buttons are frequently lost from cuffs of this type, as the smaller head of the cuff-button often pulls Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920. 1917. Serial No. 153,455.
through the button-holes, especially when the latter are somewhat worn, so that the shank of the cuff-button has considerable play therein. To overcome this danger of losing cuff-buttons I provide a tongue or ila-p 7, either stitched to or made integral with the cuff 3. Said tongue is preferably located opposite one of the inner button-holes, as shown in F ig l, and is provided with a button-hole 8. he tongue 1 is folded over on the inside of the cuff, as shown in Fig. 2, and the cuff-button inserted through the button-holes 5 in that end of the cuff' and the button-hole 8. The button-hole 8 is preferably smaller than the button-holes 5 and the tongue 7 is so constructed that when e. cuff-button is inserted through the lnitow holes, the tongue 7 draws the shank of the cuiibutton tightly against the ends of the button-holes 5, while the opposite end of the button-hole 8 presses tightly against said shank. Thus, as shown in Fig. 3, the material of the cuff entirely surrounds the shank and is held firmly against it on all sides, absolutely preventing the loss of the cuff-button when the cuffs are unbuttoncd and partially rolled up.
I claim as my invention:
A. shirt end' having button holes therein and a tongue adapted to fold around the end of the cuil" and l'iaving a. buttonhole therein, said tongue lying between the folds of the cuil' and the outer end of the buttonhole therein lapping the corresponding end of the adj acent buttonhole in the cuff only a sucient distance to receive the shank of the cuil' button between the outer end wall of (he huttonhole in the cuff and outer end n af of the buttonhole in the tongue, wherebyY the button will be locked :1t one end of the buttonhole in the cuff.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 1917.
