T. J. FLAGG.
. Scarf Shield.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS FLAGG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A SCARF-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,272, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed March 18, 1881. Term of patent 35 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, THOMAS J. FLAGG, a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and original Design in Scarf-Shields; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a new and original design for scaif-shields for made-up scart's for gentlemeus wear.
The leading feature of my design consists in a quadrilateral shield or stiffening-piece, bounded by converging sides and inwardlycurved ends. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is an elevation of my newly-designed shield or stifiening-piece,the scarf itself bei n g illustrated by dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of a modification of the said design.
A represents the shield or stiffening-piece. Its upper and lower ends are bounded by inwardly-curved lines a b a b, and its sides are bounded by straight lines a a b b, which converge so that the distance between the corners a b shall be less than that between the corners a I). The curve of the widest end a I) is greater than that of the opposite end, a b, and in use this latter is combined with the upper or neck line of the scarf. (See dotted lines, Fig. 1.)
The acute angle formed by the intersection of the lower curved line, a b, with the side lines of the shield may be cut off either diagonally in a straight line, as shown at 0 c, Fig.
1, or in a curve, to form a rounded corner, as shown at c c, Fig. 2.
The stiffness of appearance in the quadrilateral shield A, bounded by straight sides and curved ends, as described, may be relieved by lneansof a central indentation or indented line, w, produced centrally upon the shield from one end to the other, so that the shield shall appear to be centrally divided into two parts. The upper end of this dividing line or depression to may be further relieved by means of a curved notch or recess, 00, formed at its intersection with the upper curved end, a, I), of the shield, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
What [claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The design for a shield or stiffening-piece for made-up scarfs herein shown and described, the same consisting of a quadrilateral piece, A, bounded by straight converging lines a a b b on its sides, and inwardly-curved lines a b a b on its ends.
2. The design for a shield for made-up scarfs herein shown and described, the same consisting of a quadrilateral piece, having inwardlycurved ends connected by straight but convergin g sides, and longitudinallydivided by a central line or indentation, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOS. J. FLAGG.
