PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE S. FAIRBANKS AND CHARLES H. FAIRBANKS, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
HAT-FASTENER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,197, dated April 25, 1905.
Application filed December 19, 1904. Serial No. 237,4:95.
To (all whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that we, HORACE S. FAIRBANKS and CHARLES H. FAIRBANKS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of \Nisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to devices for securing ladies hats to the heads of the wearers in place of using hat-pins; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and Subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our said device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of a portion thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views taken, respectively, on the planes indicated by the lines 3 3 and 4 4 in Fig. 2.
Referring by numerals to the said drawings, 1 designates a plate of sheet metal whose upper edge is turned up to form a three-part flange 2 3 4, the parts thereof being separated by grooves. The plate is further formed with two upturned lips 5 6, cut and bent up from said plate and having holes therethrough, and with an upturned catch 7, likewise cut and bent from said plate, ad jacentto one end thereof, while said plate near its other end is formed with a hole 8 and an edge notch 9, through which hole 8 an ordinary pin 10 is inserted and then bent around the plate, so as to extend longitudinally. from the notch 9 and snap under the catch 7, all as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and i.
The fastening device proper is formed of a piece of spring-wire bent to form a head 11 and two diverging curved legs 12 12. In assembling our device these legs are first inserted in the grooves between the parts 2 and 3 and 3 and 4 of the described plate-flange 2 3 at and then through the holes in the lips 5 6. These holes are farther apart than are the grooves in the plate-flange, and so as the legs are pressed farther through the said grooves and holes the free ends of said legs become farther separated. These ends are flattened into diamond-shaped points 13 13, which will readily penetrate the hair of the wearer, but being wider than the legs will prevent their accidental withdrawal from the plate 1.
- In use the device is pinned to the lining of the hat on the edge of the crown and brim, two of these devices being used, one opposite the other. The legs curve into the crown of the hat and the hair of the wearer, and when the hat is to be removed a slight pull on the head 11 will serve to quickly withdraw the legs 12 12 until the ends 13 13 are between the lips 5 6 and the edge of the plate 1, and thus protected it will be impossible for said ends to become entangled with the wearers hair, besides which the diamond shape of said ends insure a smooth withdrawal, as well as advance free from catching in the use of the device.
Another advantage of our fastener lies in the adaptability of use of an ordinary pin, as shown at 10, thus doing away with the annoyance and liability of loss of the ordinary soldered pin, and if the fastening-pin becomes lost another can be bent to place in a mo-- ment ready for use without the trouble and delay incident to replacing same through a jewelry-shop, as usual with similar devices.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hat-fastener, the combination with a plate having a grooved flange, perforated lips and a bent catch struck up therefrom, and formed with a notched end and a hole adjacent ther to, of a pin passed through said hole and bent around said notch and under said catch, and a spring-wire formed into a head and divergent legs passed through the grooves in the plate-flange and the perforations in the said lips.
2. In a hat-fastener, the combination with a plate adapted to be secured to the edge of the crown and brim of a hat, and formed with a grooved flange and struck-up perforated lips, of a spring-wire formed into a head and divergent legs passed through the grooves in the oonnty'of Racine and State of Wisconsin, the plate-flange and the perforations in the in the presence of two Witnesses.
said lips, and having the ends of said legs flat- HORACE S. FAIRBANKS. tened into diamond-shaped points of greater 7 CHARLES H. FAIRBANKS. 5 width than that of said legs. Witnesses:
In testimony that we claim the foregoing ANDREW DIETRIGH,
We have hereunto set our hands, at Racine, in JOSEPH M. DIETRICH.
