ANCHOR FOR COMES.
Specification of'Iietters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4,1911.
Application filed March 21, 1910. Serial No. 550,642.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. Gnoo'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchors for Combs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to anchors for combs and the like, and has for an object to provide spring-actuated means adapted to engage the hair of the wearer and anchor ing a comb securely thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spring-actuated anchor permanently connected with the comb with means extending through the body of the comb for manipulating the spring anchor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spring anchor for association with a comb, and means for manipulating such anchor, stamped from a single piece of ma terial bent into the required form.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:--Figure 1 is a view of a comb embodying the present invention seen in rear elevation. Fig. 2 is a view of the comb in front elevation with the anchor removed showing the slots formed therein for receiving the manipulating means. Fig. 3 is a top edge elevation of a comb provided with the present invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the anchor dissociated from the comb. Fig. 5 is a view in plan of the blank from which the anchor is formed.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The present invention is adapted to be associated with practically any form of hair or ornamental comb ordinarily employed and shown conventionally at 10.
The comb proper is provided with elongated openings or slots 11 and rigidly secured to the back of such comb is the anchor member shown in perspective at Fig. 4 and in blank at Fig. 5, The anchor member comprises a shank 12 secured to the comb in any approved manner as by the rivets 13 and is formed integral with the anchor prongs 14, bows 15 connecting such members and forming springs. Also integral with the shank 12 is a keeper 16 having slots 17 in which are positioned the anchor prongs 14 and also provided with tongues 18 as shown in blank at Fig. 5 which are curled as at 19 to form loops extending through the slots 11 in front of the comb.
It will be apparent that by engaging the loops 19 with the finger and thumb of the wearer and forcing together the anchor prongs, which are connected with the loops, the prongs will be moved together to dotted position at Fig. 1 when the comb and the anchor connected therewith may be readily and easily inserted in the hair. When the fingers are removed from the loops 19 the springs 15 are forced outwardly to the full line position shown at Fig. 1, when the comb will be anchored securely in the hair and will not be accidentally displaced therefrom but may be readily removed from the hair by again pressing together the loops 19.
IV hat I claim is 1. The combination with a comb having a slot formed thcrethrough, of a spring anchor secured to the back of said comb and embodying diverging prongs, and means extending through the slot to facilitate the manual closing together of the prongs.
2. The combination with a comb, of diverging, penetrating prongs secured thereto, said prongs connected by an integral slots formed therethrough, of anchor prongs secured to the back of the comb, springs connecting said prongs, means attached to the prongs and extending through the slots to the front of the comb facilitating the pressing together of the anchor prongs, and 10 means for limiting the movement of the prongs.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
