WALLACE NOWACKE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MAX LOESSER, OF SAME PLACE.
HAIR-RETAINER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 673,650, dated. May 7, 1901.
I Application filed December 18, 1900. Serial No. 40,329. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALLACE NowAoKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Hair-Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved haircomb of that class which is used by ladies for retaining the hair at the back and the side of the head, said comb being inserted into the hair and retained without any especial attaching-pins in any desired position, so as to make up the hair-dress desired; and the invention consists of a ladys hair-comb comprising a row of comb-teeth and a preferably loop-shaped guard to which are attached the said teeth, the main body of the said guard being at one side of and in a plane parallel with the row of teeth, so as to exert a spring action on the hair passed through the teeth in such manner that the teeth are covered by the hair, the spaces between the comb-teeth extending below the lower inner edge of the guard, while the loop -shaped guard is shown up, so as to appear as a buckle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing my improved hair-comb in position at the back of the head. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same removed from the hair and drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section thereof, and Fig. 4 is an edge view looking toward the points of the comb-teeth.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a row of teeth, and B the back of a comb of suitable size, such as used by ladies for retaining the hair in proper position for a headdress. The comb A B may be made of tortoise-shell, celluloid, metal, or any other suitable material. To the edge of the back B'of the comb-teeth A is applied a loop-shaped guard D, which may be made plain or ornamental, so as to simulate a buckle-frame, and which is cemented, riveted, or otherwise fastened to the back of the comb in position parallel therewith and at a short distance from the teeth A, so as to form a space C beover the teeth and below the lower part of.
the guard D, so as to entirely cover the teeth, but leave the loop-shaped guard entirely exposed as a buckle-like ornament for the hair.
My improved hair-retaining comb is used, preferably, by moving the teeth in upward direction into the hair at the side or back of the head until the hair covers it entirely, in which position it is retained firmly in place by the pressure of the guard on the body of hair between the teeth and guard, so as to require no separate retaining-pins or other similar devices which are nowused by ladies in connection with hair-retaining combs heretofore in use.
The advantages of my improved combs are that the comb and guard are made in one structure, either integral or connected, and are thereby at any moment ready for use and application to the head-dress, so as to be conveniently handled when making the toilet and presenting when in position a very neat and ornamental appearance.
Having thus described. my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A ladys'hair-comb, consisting of a row of comb-teeth provided with a back, and a loopshaped guard attached to the back of the comb parallel with the same, the spaces between the comb-teethextending below the lower inner edge of the guard, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALLACE NOWACKE.
