To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WALLACE NOWAOKE and MAX P. LOESSER, citizens of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Hair-Combs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved haircomb of that class which is used for retaining the hair at the back and the side of the head, said comb being inserted into the-hair and retained, and is an improvement on Letters Patent granted to Wallace Nowacke, No. 673,650, being dated May 7, 1901; and the object of the invention is to combine all the advantages of the above-mentioned patent with such a constructionas will cause the hair after insertion of said comb to assume a rolling or wavy position between the guard and the teeth.

With this object in view the invention consists of the details of construction and arran gement which will more fully appear here inafter.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our improved haircomb in position at the back of the head. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same removed from the hair and drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section thereof on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view showing the adjustment in the hair.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a row of teeth, and B the back of a comb of suitable size, such as used by ladies for retaining the hair in proper position for a head-dress. The comb maybe made of tortoise-shell, celluloid, metal, or other suitable material. To

the ends of the back B of the comb is applied a loop-shaped guard D, which may be plain or ornamental, so as to simulate a buckleframe, and which is cemented, riveted, or otherwise fastened to the back of the comb in a position substantially parallel therewith and close to the teeth A, so as to be in contact therewith, or at least in close proximity thereto. The guard can also be made in one piece with the comb, provided a natural tortoiseshell or other one-piece blank is used. A V- shaped groove 0 is formed between the inner lower edge of the back and the lower ends of the teeth, so that when the comb is pushed up into the hair at the back or side of the head the hair taken up by the teeth passes over the teeth and between guard D and said teeth and into the V-shaped groove 0, so as to entirely cover the teeth, but leave the loopshaped guard D and the back of the comb entirely exposed as a buckle-like ornament for the hair.

The teeth A are made wave-like or undu lating in longitudinal direction and arranged in a transverse curve, together with the back B and guard D, as shown in the drawings, the loop-shaped guard D being provided with a concave inner face e adjacent to the convex side of the row of teeth, thus allowing the hair to assume a rolling or wavy position be tween the guard and teeth, so as to retain the comb by the friction between the hair, teeth, and guard firmly in position on the back of the head and present at thesame time an or namental appearance by the bulge formed by the hair between the guard and back.

The present construction is used,preferably, by moving the teeth in an upward direction into the hair at the side or back of the head until the hair covers them entirely, in which position it is retained firmly in place by the pressure of the guard on the body of the hair I between the teeth and the guard.

The comb is made in one structure, either integral or connected, and is ready for use and application at any moment, so as to be conveniently handled when making the toilet.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A ladys hair-comb, consisting of a row of teeth, a back at the lower ends of the teeth,-

and a loop-shaped guard, said guard being connected with ends of the back and provided with a concave inner face, substantially as set forth.

2.
